You cannot permanently disable automatic updates through Windows 11 Home’s standard Settings controls. You can pause updates temporarily, limit some downloads on a metered network, and choose when Windows restarts—but updates eventually resume and need to be installed.
What Windows 11 Home lets you control
Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely: they will eventually need to be downloaded and installed to help keep the device safe and secure. The built-in controls are ways to delay updates, manage data use, or reduce interruptions—not a permanent off switch. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains that limitation.

| Control | What it changes | Duration or limit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause updates | Delays updates that require a restart and their installation | Up to 35 days from the current date | When the pause expires, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs the latest available updates. |
| Metered connection | Limits data use and some update downloads on a selected network | While that network is marked as metered | Priority updates still download; Store downloads and offline-file syncing may also be affected. |
| Active hours or scheduled restart | Helps move restart interruptions away from times you use the PC | According to your active-hours or restart settings | Does not disable update downloads or installation. |
The Settings paths below are Microsoft’s documented Windows 11 controls; the cited guidance does not distinguish these controls by Home edition.
How to pause updates temporarily
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Under Pause updates, select an end date.
Microsoft’s current guidance describes a maximum pause window of 35 days from the current date. Updates that require a restart are held while the pause is active. Once it ends, Windows checks for the latest available updates and downloads and installs them. You can extend the pause again, but the rolling limit remains 35 days. Microsoft states, “This doesn’t permanently turn off automatic updates.” See Pause updates in Windows.

How to limit downloads on a metered network
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Open the properties for the Wi-Fi or Ethernet network you want to limit.
- Turn on Metered connection.
On a metered connection, Windows Update downloads only priority updates, so this setting reduces some downloads but does not stop updates entirely. Some Microsoft Store app downloads may pause, and offline files may not sync automatically. The setting applies to the network you mark as metered. See Microsoft’s metered connections guidance.
How to reduce inconvenient restarts
- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours.
- Choose automatic active hours or set them manually for the times you usually use the PC.
- If Windows offers a restart schedule for an update, use it to choose a more convenient time.
Active hours are intended to help prevent restarts while you are typically working. Scheduling a restart likewise changes its timing, not whether updates download or install. See Microsoft’s active-hours guidance and its Windows Update FAQ.

Why some updates may install despite a pause
Microsoft’s support note published August 14, 2026, describes a gradual rollout intended to combine many restart-required updates into one restart around the monthly security update. The combined behavior applies to updates released on and after July 28, 2026, but may not yet be available on every device. Microsoft lists Defender security intelligence, AI components, critical or expedited drivers, and emergency or out-of-band updates as examples that may still install as soon as available. The rollout does not mean updates will be held indefinitely. Details are in One restart a month for Windows updates.

What to do if you need a longer delay
Use the pause control for the short-term need, then let Windows install updates when the pause ends. For limited data, mark the relevant network as metered; for work-time interruptions, adjust active hours or schedule a restart. These controls address different problems, and none is a supported permanent disable option in the standard Windows 11 Home Settings experience.
