If Samsung Keyboard is missing, frozen, closing while you type, or ignoring taps, start by checking that it is selected as your default keyboard. Then close apps, optimize Device care, restart, and install available software updates. Use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is interfering. Clear Samsung Keyboard data only after simpler checks, because that erases saved words and keyboard settings; save a factory reset for last.
Samsung’s menu names and paths can vary by Galaxy model, region, carrier, and software version. If the screen is damaged or touch input fails beyond the keyboard, seek repair advice rather than repeating software resets.

First, identify what “not working” means
A keyboard that never appears calls for a different first check than one that appears but ignores taps. Note whether the problem happens in every app or only one, whether the keyboard closes as you type, and whether other parts of the screen respond normally. These clues help you choose the right checks without deleting data unnecessarily.
- Missing keyboard: check which keyboard is selected as the default.
- Frozen, closing, or lagging: work through the low-risk software checks below.
- Keyboard appears but taps do not register: check for screen obstruction and test whether touch problems affect other areas.
Check that Samsung Keyboard is the default
Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard, then choose Samsung Keyboard. If the problem occurs only while using a third-party keyboard, switch to Samsung Keyboard to test; Samsung advises contacting that keyboard app’s developer about problems limited to its app.

On some phones or software versions, the labels or path differ. Look in Settings for the keyboard or input-method controls if you do not see these exact names.
Try low-risk fixes before changing keyboard data
Close apps and optimize the phone
Close open apps, then go to Settings > Device care > Optimize now. Older software may label this area Battery and device care. Samsung says optimization closes background apps and adjusts certain settings.

Restart the Galaxy phone
A restart can clear a temporary software problem. Open the Power menu using the method available on your model: some Galaxy phones have a dedicated Power button, while others provide power controls in the Quick settings panel.

Install available software updates
Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install or Check for updates, depending on your phone. Samsung’s US guidance notes that Verizon devices may instead show System updates.

Use Safe mode to check for app interference
Safe mode runs Samsung apps without downloaded third-party apps. If Samsung Keyboard works in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be interfering. Restart the phone normally, then remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing the keyboard after each removal. If it still fails in Safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be the cause.
Safe mode entry steps vary by Galaxy model. Follow the method for your device rather than assuming a single button sequence applies to every phone.

Check causes specific to the symptom
If the keyboard closes while you type
Samsung’s US guidance suggests adjusting edge-screen sensitivity when the keyboard closes during typing. This is worth checking if your palm or fingers may be triggering the screen edge; the relevant control’s location can vary by model.
If the keyboard appears but taps do not register
- Check whether a case, screen protector, dirt, or another obstruction is affecting the display, and test whether touch works elsewhere on the screen.
- Samsung Gulf’s guidance suggests temporarily testing without Screen Reader or Voice Access.
- Check available storage; Samsung Gulf lists low storage as a possible cause.
If touch fails across the screen, or the phone was recently dropped, software steps may not address the cause.

Clear Samsung Keyboard data only if needed
Clearing the keyboard’s data is more disruptive than restarting or changing the default keyboard: it removes Samsung Keyboard settings, saved words, and learned keyboard data. Use it only after the simpler checks.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Use the sort or filter control to show system apps if Samsung Keyboard is not listed.
- Select Samsung Keyboard and choose Force stop.
- Open Storage and choose Clear data.
Some Samsung support pages also distinguish clearing cache as an option. Use the choices shown on your installed software and check their descriptions before confirming.
When to seek repair or consider a factory reset
Screen damage or persistent touch failure
A recent drop or visible screen damage can cause touch-input problems that a keyboard reset will not fix. Samsung Philippines recommends an authorized service center or repair appointment when physical damage is suspected.

Samsung US lists a factory data reset as a final software troubleshooting step. It erases all data on the phone, not just keyboard personalization. Back up first, make sure you can access the account credentials needed during setup, and test the keyboard after the reset before reinstalling apps.
