Windows 11 Game Mode is a built-in gaming setting at Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. Microsoft says it should be on by default, so most people can leave it enabled and investigate a specific game problem separately. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance does not promise a frame-rate increase or quantify one.
What does Game Mode do in Windows 11?
Game Mode is a Windows setting intended for gaming. Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming guidance identifies where to enable it but does not detail all of its internal behavior or establish how much it changes performance on a given PC. Treat it as a general Windows gaming setting, not a guaranteed FPS booster.

Microsoft says, “First, ensure that Game Mode is enabled in Settings > Gaming > Game Mode; it should be on by default.” Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming guidance does not give a measured FPS gain or guarantee that every game or configuration will benefit.
When should you turn it on or off?
For ordinary use, leave Game Mode on. If one game develops a compatibility or performance problem, you can test whether changing the setting affects that specific case; compare the same game and conditions before and after, and restore the default if it does not help. The official guidance does not establish a universal rule that switching it off improves performance.

- Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode.
- Check whether the toggle is on. Microsoft says it should be on by default.
- If diagnosing a particular issue, change the toggle and test the same game under comparable conditions. Avoid treating one session as proof of a general FPS gain or loss.
Game Mode versus other Windows gaming features
Several Windows features relate to gaming, but they have different purposes and settings. Do not confuse them with the Game Mode toggle.
| Feature | Purpose and location | Documented context or behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Game Mode | Built-in setting at Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. | Microsoft says it should be on by default. Its current consumer guidance does not quantify FPS changes. |
| Xbox mode | A separate full-screen, controller-oriented interface. | Microsoft documents choosing a supported home app and optional startup behavior on gaming handhelds. Microsoft says the handheld setting can limit background processes while gaming; this behavior is not attributed to the Game Mode toggle. Availability can vary by supported market and rollout. |
| Optimizations for windowed games | A separate setting in Settings > System > Display > Graphics. | Applies to compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games running windowed or borderless. Microsoft says it can move compatible games to the newer flip presentation model, reducing frame latency and enabling features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. |
| Game Bar | A built-in overlay. | Microsoft describes tools including performance monitoring and recording. It is an adjacent feature, not a prerequisite for enabling Game Mode. |
Where to look if you meant a different setting
For windowed or borderless game behavior
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics to find the separate windowed-game optimization controls. Microsoft Support says, “Optimizations for windowed games improves gaming performance for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed and borderless windowed modes.” The stated scope is those compatible games and display modes, not every game.

For a console-like interface
Xbox mode is the separate feature to look for if you mean a full-screen interface designed for controller use. Microsoft’s support documentation describes its setup and optional handheld startup behavior; its background-process statement applies to that handheld setting, not to Game Mode. Microsoft Support’s Windows Gaming: Full screen experience page describes the feature, while Xbox Wire’s April 30, 2026 announcement covers its rollout.
For checking a session
Game Bar is an overlay with tools such as performance monitoring and recording. It may help you inspect a gaming session, but it is separate from Game Mode.

What performance improvement should you expect?
There is no supported number to cite here: the official consumer sources consulted do not provide a controlled Windows 11 Game Mode FPS benchmark. Results should not be described as a fixed percentage or guaranteed improvement. If you are comparing settings, use the same game, scene, display mode, and other conditions; otherwise, a change in observed performance cannot be confidently attributed to the toggle alone.
Microsoft’s older Game Mode documentation is explicitly for previous Windows versions and UWP developer APIs. It should not be used as proof of current Windows 11 Game Mode behavior.
