Usually not if avoiding ads is your only reason. OpenAI offers an ad-free Free experience in regions where its ad test is active, though that option comes with lower usage limits and reduced access to some features. Plus also removes ads, but its stronger case is the higher limits and wider model and tool access—not ad removal alone.
Will ChatGPT Plus have ads?
No. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT FAQ says Plus accounts will not have ads. It says ads may appear for eligible Free and Go users in markets where testing is active. OpenAI began the U.S. test on February 9, 2026, and its August 11, 2026 update reported launches in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Availability can change, so the country list should not be treated as a permanent or exhaustive rollout map.

Can you avoid ads without paying?
In eligible test regions, Free users may be able to choose an Ads-Free Free experience. OpenAI says this choice reduces usage limits and access to some features, including image generation or Deep Research. The option is not necessarily available to every account or in every country; OpenAI says the controls appear only where ads are being tested.

What does Plus add beyond an ad-free experience?
OpenAI lists Plus at $20 per month, billed monthly, in its What is ChatGPT Plus? article. Along with no ads, the plan offers broader model and tool access and higher limits than Free. Listed benefits include priority access during busy periods, faster responses, advanced reasoning, voice, image generation, file uploads and analysis, and Deep Research where available.
Those benefits do not mean unlimited use or a guaranteed fixed set of models. OpenAI says usage limits can vary with system conditions and model availability can change as features roll out.

Choose Ads-Free Free if ads are the only problem
If the option is available to you, try it before paying. The trade-off is reduced usage and feature access, so it may not suit someone who regularly relies on the affected capabilities.

Plus is easier to justify if you often hit Free limits or need the additional models and tools. The relevant question is whether those capabilities are worth a recurring $20 monthly subscription for your use—not whether ads alone are irritating enough to pay to remove.

Do ChatGPT ads affect answers or expose your chats?
OpenAI’s FAQ states, “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” It says ads are handled by systems separate from the chat model and are labeled separately. OpenAI also says advertisers do not see chats, chat history, memories, or personal details; it says advertisers receive only aggregated ad performance data.
