CoreWeave’s $640 million “headache” is its net interest expense for the second quarter of 2026—not the price of a product or a one-off charge. The company is extending its AI infrastructure business with Forge, software for AI development workflows. CoreWeave’s CEO expects Forge to improve margins, but the company has not quantified its contribution, so it is not yet a demonstrated solution to the interest bill.
What is CoreWeave’s $640 million headache?
CoreWeave reported $640 million in net interest expense for the three months ended June 30, 2026, up from $267 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue more than doubled year over year, reaching $2.575 billion from $1.212 billion. That growth sits alongside substantial financing and infrastructure demands: rapid expansion can bring in more revenue while also requiring significant investment and carrying interest costs.

What is CoreWeave Forge?
Announced on Sept. 30, 2026, at CoreWeave’s Fully Connected conference, Forge extends the company’s pitch beyond providing GPU cloud infrastructure. CoreWeave describes the platform as connecting the AI development loop—the workflows involved in building and developing AI. CoreWeave’s Forge announcement
The strategic idea is to offer customers software around the compute they use, rather than competing on infrastructure capacity alone. If customers adopt that software, it could add another source of revenue and potentially improve margins. But the announcement and reporting do not establish how many customers are using Forge or how much revenue it is generating.
Can Forge help pay CoreWeave’s interest bill?
Possibly over time, but there is no published evidence that it has done so. CEO Michael Intrator said, “It’s going to be accretive to margins.” TheStreet reported on Oct. 6, 2026, that he did not quantify the expected contribution, and no Forge sales target was reported. Margin improvement and interest expense are also different measures. Forge could improve the economics of CoreWeave’s business if it earns revenue at attractive margins, but that would not by itself establish that the company can cover interest costs or reduce borrowing. Assessing whether it helps with the interest bill requires evidence about Forge adoption and monetization, as well as CoreWeave’s overall cash generation and financing needs.

Why capacity and backlog matter
CoreWeave said active power reached 1.5 GW after nearly 500 MW of expansion, while total contracted power was approximately 3.7 GW. Those figures describe different things: active power is capacity currently in operation; contracted power reflects commitments and is not automatically capacity available to serve a particular customer immediately.
The company reported approximately $104 billion in revenue backlog as of June 30, 2026, and said it had added more than $25 billion in net new customer commitments early in Q3. Backlog is not recognized revenue: the company’s release says delivery and service-availability conditions apply. For Forge to change the financial picture, it must complement a business capable of delivering services to customers. Capacity, customer commitments and software adoption are related, but none alone establishes that the interest burden is covered.
The investment scale behind the growth
CoreWeave’s SEC filing reports $14.117 billion in purchases of property and equipment for the six months ended June 30, 2026, compared with $3.860 billion in the same period of 2025. The cash-flow statement line includes capitalized internal-use software, so it should not be read as hardware-only spending. CoreWeave’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q
The scale of that spending helps explain why a software strategy may be attractive: software could add revenue without being simply another sale of compute capacity. It does not prove that Forge will require little investment, generate high margins or materially change the company’s financing profile; those outcomes have not been quantified in the cited reporting.
