To adjust a compatible keyboard’s LEDs in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic lighting. Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, select the keyboard card, then change its brightness, effect, and colors. The page can also apply settings to every compatible device, prevent foreground apps from taking over, and set which background lighting app has priority.
What Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting controls
Dynamic Lighting is Windows 11’s centralized control layer for compatible RGB and LED peripherals. Microsoft describes it as a way for users and Windows apps to control and synchronize lighting across compatible keyboards, mice, and other connected devices from the Settings app. For a keyboard, that means you may be able to adjust illumination without opening the manufacturer’s configuration utility.

Microsoft announced Dynamic Lighting for Windows 11 on September 27, 2023. Its controls are not universal keyboard controls, however. A keyboard must implement the compatible HID LampArray behavior to appear in the Dynamic Lighting page. Microsoft identifies keyboards and keypads as supported LampArray device types, but support depends on the exact model and its firmware, not merely on the fact that the keyboard has RGB LEDs.
There is a separate protocol for a simple, single-level keyboard backlight. That protocol is intended for turning a basic backlight on or off or changing its level. Keyboards with zoned or per-key RGB lighting should use Dynamic Lighting instead. A keyboard can therefore have illuminated keys yet still be absent from the Windows RGB controls.

Change keyboard lighting in Windows 11
1. Open the Dynamic Lighting page
- Open the Start menu and choose Settings.
- Select Personalization in the left sidebar.
- Choose Dynamic lighting.
This is the Windows control page for compatible lighting devices. If the page does not show a keyboard card, continue with the compatibility and troubleshooting checks below rather than repeatedly changing unrelated keyboard settings.
2. Enable Windows control
Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices. With this switch enabled, Windows can send its built-in lighting settings to compatible devices. If you turn it off, the devices return to their default non-Dynamic Lighting behavior; the keyboard may then follow its firmware defaults or a manufacturer utility instead.
3. Select the keyboard and set brightness
In the device list, select the keyboard’s card. Use the available Brightness slider to increase or reduce the illumination. The exact range and behavior are supplied by the device, so Windows may expose a continuous slider on one model and a smaller set of effective levels on another.
Do not confuse the device control with the global controls lower on the page. A change made on the keyboard card targets that device. Global controls can affect all connected devices that participate in Dynamic Lighting, which is useful when you want a keyboard, mouse, and other compatible lights to share one appearance.

4. Choose an effect and colors
Open the keyboard card’s Effects control and choose from the effects the device exposes to Windows. Select the available color options for the chosen effect. Dynamic Lighting does not guarantee that every effect found in a vendor utility will be present in Settings. Advanced animations, unusual per-key patterns, macros tied to lighting, or hardware-specific modes may remain available only through the manufacturer’s software.
5. Decide whether foreground apps may override the keyboard
Find Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting. When this behavior is enabled, a game or other compatible application that becomes the foreground window can take control of the keyboard’s lights. That is useful for application-specific alerts, but it can make a carefully chosen Windows setting appear to change unexpectedly.
Disable the option if you want your selected background controller or Windows setting to continue controlling the keyboard while a game or other foreground program is running. If you leave it enabled, an effect change during a game may be an intentional priority decision rather than a hardware fault.

6. Set the background controller order
Expand Background light control. Windows lists registered applications that can control compatible lighting. Move your preferred controller to the top of the list. The first application has the highest background priority when no foreground application is taking control.

Microsoft ties this priority to the device and its USB port. If you unplug the keyboard and connect it to another port, Windows can enumerate it as a different device. A priority order that worked on one port may therefore not automatically apply after the move; review the list for the newly recognized device.
How the priority rules work
Three layers can influence the LEDs: Windows’ Dynamic Lighting settings, a registered background lighting application, and a compatible foreground application. The foreground rule is checked first when it is enabled. If no foreground application is controlling the device, the background priority order determines which registered app can send lighting commands. If Dynamic Lighting is disabled or the keyboard is not compatible, the device follows its default behavior or another utility’s controls.
| Situation | Likely controller | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Lighting is enabled and no app has focus-based control | The highest-priority registered background controller, or Windows’ own settings when no app takes control | Open Background light control and verify the order |
| A compatible game or foreground app is active | The foreground app, if the override option is enabled | Review Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting |
| Dynamic Lighting is disabled | Device firmware or the manufacturer’s utility | Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices if you want Windows control |
| The keyboard is not listed | Its firmware, utility, or default hardware behavior | Check HID LampArray compatibility and whether another utility is controlling it |
Compatibility: why some RGB keyboards do not appear
RGB marketing is not the same as Dynamic Lighting support. The deciding question is whether the exact keyboard implements the HID LampArray behavior that Windows expects. A model may offer attractive lighting through its own application yet provide no Dynamic Lighting device card.

| HID LampArray-compatible zoned RGB | Can appear as a Dynamic Lighting device | Windows controls the zones and effects that the device reports |
| Simple single-level backlight using the separate keyboard-backlight protocol | Not the same as Dynamic Lighting | Basic illumination control rather than per-key or zoned RGB effects |
| RGB controlled only by proprietary firmware or software | May not appear in Dynamic Lighting | Use the supplied utility for its supported features |
For a new keyboard, verify the exact model in Microsoft’s current supported-device information and in the manufacturer’s specifications. A brand family can contain models with different lighting controllers, so a statement that one keyboard supports Dynamic Lighting should not be applied to every model in that family.

Troubleshoot a missing or inconsistent keyboard light
The keyboard is absent from Dynamic Lighting
- Confirm that the keyboard is a supported HID LampArray device, not merely an RGB keyboard.
- Make sure Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices is enabled.
- Close or temporarily disable the manufacturer’s lighting utility. Another controller may be holding the LEDs and preventing Windows from presenting or changing them.
- Reconnect the keyboard and return to Settings > Personalization > Dynamic lighting to see whether Windows rediscovers it.
- If the keyboard uses only a basic backlight protocol, use the keyboard’s hardware controls or the utility intended for that protocol; Dynamic Lighting is designed for compatible LampArray lighting.
The lights change when a game starts
Check whether Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting is enabled. Turn it off when the Windows or background setting should remain in charge. If you want game-specific lighting, leave it enabled and arrange the background controller separately for periods when no compatible foreground app is active.
The keyboard behaves differently after changing USB ports
Open Background light control and inspect the priority list again. Microsoft notes that background priority is associated with both the device and the USB port, so moving the keyboard can create a separately enumerated instance. Put the preferred registered app at the top for that instance.
Windows offers fewer effects than the manufacturer’s utility
That is a control-scope limitation, not necessarily a defective keyboard. Dynamic Lighting exposes the effects and color capabilities that the device reports through its compatible interface. Continue using the manufacturer’s utility for features that Windows does not expose, while remembering that two controllers competing for the same LEDs can produce unexpected changes.
Brightness changes do not match what you expect
Adjust the slider on the keyboard’s device card rather than only the global setting, then check whether an app has taken control. Hardware firmware can also define how many practical levels a slider produces. If the keyboard returns to a previous level after an app closes, review background priority and the utility’s startup behavior.

What to check when choosing a Windows 11 RGB keyboard
If your current keyboard cannot use Dynamic Lighting, compare replacement models by implementation rather than by the word “RGB” alone. These are the decision points that determine how well Windows can manage it:
| Comparison point | Why it matters | Question to ask before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic Lighting/HID LampArray support | Determines whether a device card can appear in Windows | Does the exact model document HID LampArray or Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting support? |
| Per-key versus zone lighting | Sets the level of individual control available in hardware and Windows | Are colors addressable per key, by zone, or only as one backlight? |
| Brightness and effect controls exposed to Windows | A compatible device may still expose only part of its full feature set | Which brightness levels, colors, and effects are documented for Dynamic Lighting? |
| Dependence on vendor software | Some features or all lighting control may require a separate utility | Can the keyboard retain settings in firmware, and does the utility need to run continuously? |
| Wired versus wireless connection | Connection mode can affect discovery, firmware behavior, and which device instance Windows remembers | Does the manufacturer document Dynamic Lighting support over the connection mode you plan to use? |
| Presence in Microsoft’s current supported-device information | Provides an additional compatibility check beyond marketing material | Is the exact model, not just its product family, listed? |
Microsoft’s initial Dynamic Lighting announcement identified participation from several device and software makers, but participation does not make every product from those companies compatible. Treat the exact model and current firmware documentation as authoritative.
Practical setup checklist
- Connect the keyboard directly and note which USB port you used.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic lighting.
- Enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
- Select the keyboard card and set brightness, effect, and colors.
- Use global controls only when you want the same treatment across all compatible devices.
- Decide whether foreground applications should be allowed to override the setting.
- Place the preferred background controller first.
- If you change USB ports, repeat the priority check.
- If the keyboard never appears, verify HID LampArray support and look for a competing manufacturer utility.
Limits to keep in mind
Dynamic Lighting is a compatibility-based Windows feature, not a universal translator for every keyboard lighting system. It can centralize control where the keyboard implements the expected interface, but it cannot add per-key addressing to a single-color backlight or expose effects that the firmware does not report. The most reliable setup is one in which the keyboard’s documented interface, Windows’ Dynamic Lighting settings, and the chosen app priority all agree on which controller should be active.
