Windows 11 Copy as Path: Add It to the Right-Click Menu or Remove It Safely

Windows 11 usually has Copy as path already. Select a file or folder, right-click it, and choose Show more options if the command is missing from the compact menu. You can also hold Shift while right-clicking to open the extended menu. If you want Copy as path to appear as a permanent entry in the first menu, add a registry shell key; if you later change your mind, deleting that key reverses the customization.

What “Copy as path” does in Windows 11

Copy as path places the complete filesystem location of a selected item on the clipboard. For example, copying a file from a folder named Reports can produce a value such as "C:UsersAlexDocumentsReportsbudget.xlsx". The quotation marks are normal when the path contains spaces and allow the entire location to be pasted into Command Prompt, PowerShell, a file dialog, a script, or a support message as one argument.

The command copies a location; it does not copy the file’s contents and does not move, rename, or open the item. You can use it on files and folders, including items on drives visible in File Explorer. A folder path can then be pasted into an application’s Open dialog or into a terminal command that accepts a directory.

Use the built-in command before changing anything

Check the compact Windows 11 menu

  1. Open File Explorer and select one file or folder.
  2. Right-click the selection.
  3. Choose Copy as path if it is listed.

Windows 11 uses a shorter, redesigned context menu. Commands and shell extensions that are not shown there remain available under Show more options. If Copy as path is absent from the first menu, right-click again or select Show more options, then choose Copy as path from the Windows 10-style menu.

Reveal the extended command with Shift

Windows’ shell supports extended verbs that appear when the user holds Shift while right-clicking. In File Explorer:

  1. Select the file or folder.
  2. Hold Shift and right-click the selection.
  3. Choose Copy as path from the expanded menu.

This is the safest way to test whether the command is available but hidden. It makes no system change and works independently of whether the compact menu displays the entry.

Open the expanded menu from the keyboard

With the item selected, press Shift+F10. On keyboards that have one, the Menu key opens the context menu as well. These shortcuts load the Windows 10-style menu, where Copy as path may be visible even when the compact menu does not show it. On some laptops, you may need to hold Fn while pressing F10, depending on the keyboard’s function-key mode.

Choose between the native shortcuts and a permanent menu entry

Method Visibility Safety Reversibility Build resilience
Copy as path in the compact menu Permanent when the current build places it there Native Windows behavior No change to undo Microsoft-supported shell behavior
Show more options Available on demand in the extended menu Native Windows behavior No change to undo Microsoft-supported, although menu layout can vary by build
Shift+right-click, Shift+F10, or the Menu key Available on demand as an extended verb Native Windows behavior No change to undo Based on Windows’ documented extended-verb mechanism
Registry customization Adds a regular Copy as path entry to the shell menu Requires editing the registry Delete the added key Uses a third-party recipe and may need adjustment on future builds

Use the native methods if you only need the command occasionally or want the least risk. Use the registry method only when opening the extended menu every time is inconvenient and you are comfortable backing up and restoring registry data.

Add Copy as path as a regular right-click entry

The following procedure adds a shell entry for filesystem objects. Microsoft documents the shell and extended-verb framework, while the exact key and values below come from a secondary Windows 10/11 customization recipe. Microsoft does not guarantee that this exact recipe will remain unchanged on every future Windows 11 build.

1. Back up the registry location

  1. Press Windows+R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
  3. In Registry Editor, browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTAllFilesystemObjectsshell.
  4. Right-click the shell key and choose Export.
  5. Save the .reg backup somewhere you can find later.

Exporting the parent key gives you a recovery file before any edit. Do not delete or rename unrelated shell entries while you are working.

2. Create the Copy as path key

  1. Right-click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTAllFilesystemObjectsshell and select New > Key.
  2. Name the new key windows.copyaspath.
  3. Select that key, double-click its (Default) value, and set the value data to Copy as path.

The default value is the text that appears in the context menu. Spelling and punctuation determine what users see, so enter the label exactly as you want it displayed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Add the command values

Inside windows.copyaspath, create the following values. For each string value, use New > String Value; for the numeric value, use New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Value name Type Value data
InvokeCommandOnSelection DWORD (32-bit) 1
VerbHandler String Value {f3d06e7c-1e45-4a26-847e-f9fcdee59be0}
VerbName String Value copyaspath

Check every character in the handler identifier, including braces and hyphens. A typo can leave a visible menu item that does nothing or can prevent the entry from appearing.

4. Refresh File Explorer

Close Registry Editor and test a file or folder in File Explorer. The entry may appear immediately. If it does not, restart the shell:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find Windows Explorer in the process list.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart.
  4. Reopen the folder and right-click an item.

Signing out of Windows and signing back in also reloads Explorer. Restarting Explorer closes and reopens its windows, so save any work in progress first.

Remove the added entry and return to the default behavior

  1. Open Registry Editor with regedit.
  2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTAllFilesystemObjectsshell.
  3. Right-click the windows.copyaspath key you created and choose Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion, close Registry Editor, and restart Windows Explorer or sign out and back in.

Deleting this key removes the permanent entry created by the customization. It does not remove Windows’ native Copy as path command. You can still find that command under Show more options or by holding Shift while right-clicking, provided the current Windows build and shell extensions expose it.

Why Copy as path may appear to be missing

The compact menu hides it

The most common explanation is menu organization rather than a missing feature. Always check Show more options and try Shift+right-click before editing the registry. Installed shell extensions and the Windows build can change which commands receive a prominent position.

You selected an item that does not expose the command

Copy as path is a File Explorer shell command for filesystem objects. Test with an ordinary local file or folder. If you are interacting with a special virtual location, a search result, a library view, or an application-managed item, the available verbs can differ from those for a normal filesystem object.

Explorer has not reloaded

After a registry edit, a stale Explorer process can keep the old menu cached. Restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager, or sign out and back in. If the entry still does not appear, verify the key path and all three value names and data exactly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A shell extension or Windows update changed the menu

Windows 11’s context-menu organization continues to evolve. A feature that appears in one build can move to the extended menu in another, and third-party shell extensions can add, reorder, or interfere with entries. Test the native Show more options and Shift methods after an update before assuming the registry customization failed.

Recover safely if the menu becomes unstable

  • If only the new entry is faulty, delete windows.copyaspath, restart Explorer, and test again.
  • If you accidentally changed another value, close Registry Editor and import the backup you exported before editing by double-clicking the saved .reg file, then restart Explorer.
  • If Explorer repeatedly crashes after a change, sign out or restart Windows before importing the backup. Avoid making additional registry edits while the shell is unstable.
  • Do not remove the entire AllFilesystemObjectsshell key to solve a single-entry problem; that can affect many context-menu commands.

Copy a path without opening Properties

You do not need to open a file’s Properties dialog. Select the item in File Explorer and use Copy as path from the compact menu, Show more options, or the Shift-extended menu. Then paste with Ctrl+V wherever a path is accepted. For a command-line tool, keep the quotation marks when Windows supplies them, especially if the filename or any parent folder contains spaces.

Recommended setup for most users

Keep the native Windows behavior unless you have a frequent workflow that genuinely benefits from a one-click permanent entry. The native shortcuts require no modification and are more likely to remain compatible as Windows 11 changes. If you choose the registry option, export the parent key first, create only the specified windows.copyaspath key and values, and know how to delete that key or restore the export.
