Linux Mint is the closest general-purpose replacement for many Windows 11 users, Ubuntu is the stronger choice for current hardware and broad developer support, and ChromeOS Flex suits a browser-first workflow on an eligible older PC or Mac. None is a universal substitute. Your decisive checks are the applications and games you must run, hardware compatibility, available memory and storage, support lifetime, and whether you want to test, dual-boot, or erase Windows.
Which Windows 11 alternative fits your computer?
Start with the work you cannot compromise on. A Linux desktop can cover web browsing, documents, programming, media, communication and many games, but Windows-only applications, specialist peripherals and games with strict anti-cheat systems may not work. ChromeOS Flex is deliberately narrower: it turns a compatible computer into a browser-centered system rather than a full Windows-style desktop. macOS is a separate purchase decision because the evidence here does not establish a supported, ordinary-PC installation path.

| Option | Best evidence-based fit | Published requirements and support | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux Mint | Familiar, configurable general desktop for older or moderate hardware | 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB recommended; 20 GB disk minimum, 100 GB recommended; 1,024×768 display; five-year LTS support | Proprietary ATI/Nvidia drivers are easy to install but are not installed by default; verify your applications and hardware |
| Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS | General desktop, development and a broad catalog of documented applications | 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage for comfortable use; five years of free security and maintenance updates; support through April 2031 | These are Canonical’s stated requirements, not a benchmark proving it is faster or slower than Windows on your machine |
| ChromeOS Flex | Browser-first computing and repurposing an older Windows, Mac or Linux computer | x86-64 Intel or AMD processor, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage; installer USB of at least 8 GB; works broadly on devices made over the last 10 or more years | Google guarantees functionality only on certified models, with model-specific features varying |
Mint publishes the lowest baseline requirements, Ubuntu publishes the most explicit current long-term desktop release information, and ChromeOS Flex has the simplest operating model when your work lives in web applications. Treat those as starting points, not universal performance rankings.
Linux Mint: the familiar general desktop route
What it is good at
Linux Mint describes its goal as being “comfortable and easy to use but also powerful and configurable.” That combination makes it a practical first Linux installation for someone leaving Windows but still expecting a conventional desktop: a taskbar, application menu, local files, installable programs and control over the interface. It is suitable for everyday browsing, office work, coding, media and light-to-moderate gaming when the required software supports Linux.
#1 Best Overall
- LINUX MINT 22.3 MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Linux Mint live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
The project’s FAQ lists 2 GB of RAM as a minimum, recommends 4 GB, and lists 20 GB of disk space with 100 GB recommended. It also specifies a minimum 1,024×768 resolution. Read the recommended figures as a more comfortable target if you keep many browser tabs or use heavier applications. Mint states that its long-term-support releases receive five years of support. See the Linux Mint FAQ for the project’s current requirements and support wording.
Hardware and driver checks
Mint’s FAQ says proprietary ATI and Nvidia drivers are easy to install, but they are not installed by default. That matters if your laptop has a discrete GPU, unusual wireless hardware or a display setup that depends on vendor drivers. Before replacing Windows, record your exact computer model, graphics adapter, Wi-Fi chipset, printer and external-monitor requirements. Then check whether the needed driver appears in Mint’s driver utility and whether the manufacturer provides Linux instructions.
Where Mint can disappoint
- A Windows-only accounting, engineering, creative or enterprise application may have no native Linux version.
- A game can launch through a compatibility layer yet fail because of its launcher, kernel-level anti-cheat, video codec or peripheral support.
- Very new hardware may need a newer kernel or firmware than the Mint release you choose.
Mint is therefore a strong default for a conventional desktop, not a promise that every Windows workflow transfers unchanged.

Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS: broader documentation and a current support window
Requirements and lifecycle
Canonical’s Ubuntu download page identifies Ubuntu Desktop 26.04.1 LTS and says the release receives five years of free security and maintenance updates. The Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes give the support end date as April 2031. Canonical’s comfortable-use specification is a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, at least 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free storage. Those numbers are the publisher’s stated capabilities and requirements; they are not a controlled performance comparison with Windows 11.
Ubuntu’s higher memory recommendation than Mint’s published minimum makes it a better fit when your computer has modern hardware and you want a fully featured desktop, development tools or several large applications open at once. It may still run on less capable systems, but the documented comfortable-use target is the figure to plan around.

Applications and hardware ecosystem
Canonical highlights native desktop applications including Firefox, Chrome, Discord, Steam and OBS Studio, along with a certified-hardware category covering laptops, desktops and workstations from hardware partners. Certification is useful when you are buying a replacement computer rather than forcing an older machine to work. Check the current model listing and exact configuration before purchase; a product family can contain different wireless chips, graphics options and firmware.
Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS summary and release notes describe an NTSYNC driver that can offer performance potential for Windows games running through Wine and Proton. “Potential” is not a compatibility guarantee. Test every important title, launcher, multiplayer service and controller individually, and check the game publisher’s anti-cheat requirements.

ChromeOS Flex: a browser-first way to reuse a PC or Mac
What ChromeOS Flex changes
ChromeOS Flex replaces the existing operating system with a streamlined environment centered on browser applications, cloud storage and web administration. It can make an older computer useful for email, documents, video meetings, education and web services without maintaining a large local software stack. It is not a drop-in replacement for desktop applications that require Windows APIs, macOS software, local plug-ins or specialized drivers.
Google says ChromeOS Flex works on most Windows, Mac and Linux devices made over the last 10 or more years, but the guarantee is narrower: “Google only guarantees ChromeOS Flex functionality on certified models.” Use the certified-model list and read the feature notes for your exact model. Certification can identify limits involving cameras, audio, touchscreens, sleep, fingerprint readers, ports or other components.
Minimum hardware and installer media
Google lists an x86-64 Intel or AMD processor, 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. Creating the installer requires an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. The ChromeOS Flex preparation guide explains the current image and USB process. A computer meeting the minimum can still deliver a poor experience if its storage is failing, its wireless device is uncertified or its firmware has quirks.

Who should choose it
- People whose essential work happens in browser tabs or Android/web-compatible services.
- Schools, households or small offices repurposing eligible older machines.
- Users who prefer automatic updates and few local configuration decisions.
Choose Linux instead when you need a broad local desktop, developer toolchains, offline applications or more control over drivers and the file system.
macOS is a hardware purchase, not a normal Windows-PC installation
macOS may be attractive if you specifically need Apple’s applications, hardware integration or ecosystem, but the sources available for this comparison do not establish a supported installation path for an ordinary Windows PC. Treat it as a decision to buy an Apple computer, then verify the current model, operating-system support and application requirements separately. Do not plan a migration around an unofficial PC installation.
Application and game compatibility: verify the exceptions first
Make a must-have inventory
Write down every application and device you use, including items you open only monthly. Classify each as native Linux, browser-based, available through a compatibility layer, or Windows/macOS-only. Include VPN clients, password managers, printer utilities, scanners, audio interfaces, drawing tablets, game launchers and work-required plug-ins. A browser replacement is not enough if your daily job depends on a local database or a hardware-specific utility.
Linux compatibility is application-specific
Ubuntu lists native Linux applications such as Firefox, Chrome, Discord, Steam and OBS Studio, demonstrating that common categories are covered. That list does not establish that every plug-in, version or workflow works. Wine and Proton can run some Windows software and games, but success depends on the individual program. The NTSYNC driver mentioned in Ubuntu 26.04 release notes may improve performance potential; it does not make all Windows games compatible.
Anti-cheat and peripherals need special attention
Competitive games may require an anti-cheat implementation that does not support Linux. Test the exact title and multiplayer mode before changing systems. For peripherals, confirm that the device works for basic input and for advanced features such as macro keys, RGB control, pressure sensitivity, firmware updates and calibration. Keep Windows available until these checks are complete.

Hardware support and certification
Existing computer
Record the model number and component list in Windows before installation. Check CPU architecture, RAM, free storage, graphics, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, audio, printer and external displays. For ChromeOS Flex, compare the exact model with Google’s certified list because general statements about device age do not guarantee functionality. For Mint and Ubuntu, test the live USB and check whether networking, suspend, sound and graphics work before you install.
Buying a replacement
Ubuntu provides a certified-hardware category for laptops, desktops and workstations. That gives buyers a starting point, but certification should be checked at the exact model and configuration level. Do not assume that a similarly named machine has identical firmware or components.
How to test without committing
Ubuntu live USB
- Back up documents, photos, browser data and license information to storage you can access independently of the computer.
- Download Ubuntu Desktop from the official download page and create its bootable USB installer according to Canonical’s current instructions.
- Restart the computer and open its boot-device menu, commonly through a manufacturer-specific function key.
- Select the USB drive and choose the option to try Ubuntu without installing.
- Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, webcam, sleep, external displays, printers, required websites and a representative application or game.
Ubuntu explicitly documents running from USB so you can try it before changing the internal drive. Performance from USB is not identical to an installed system, but hardware detection and device behavior are useful signals.
ChromeOS Flex temporary USB session
- Use Google’s preparation documentation to create an installer on a USB drive of at least 8 GB.
- Boot the target computer from USB and select the temporary try option rather than installing immediately.
- Check the certified-model notes, wireless connection, camera, audio, suspend behavior and the web services you depend on.
- Install only after confirming that replacing the internal operating system is acceptable; installation can erase existing data.
Mint live testing
Create a Mint bootable USB using the current image instructions from the Mint project, boot it on the target computer and test the same hardware checklist. Live sessions are ideal for detecting missing Wi-Fi, graphics or audio support before you repartition a disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDual boot or replace Windows?
Dual boot
Dual boot keeps Windows for applications or games that do not transfer. It requires enough unallocated, resizable disk space and careful handling of the existing boot configuration. BitLocker can affect resizing and installation decisions; the exact behavior depends on the device and Windows configuration. Read the current Ubuntu installation guidance, suspend or otherwise manage encryption only as documented for your machine, and keep recovery keys available.

- ✅Supported UEFI and Legacy, Compatibility any PC/Laptop, Any boot issue only needs to disable "Secure Boot"
Dual boot adds a choice at startup and means maintaining two operating systems, updates and sets of drivers. It is worthwhile when you have a small number of Windows-only requirements and enough storage to separate the systems safely.
Replace Windows
A clean replacement gives the alternative operating system the whole drive and avoids a dual-boot menu, but it removes the installed Windows environment. Confirm backups, recovery media, application licenses, two-factor authentication access and exportable browser data first. Verify that you can restore the computer or reinstall Windows if your trial reveals an incompatibility.
Migration checklist
- Backups: keep at least one separate copy of irreplaceable files and verify that you can open it.
- Accounts: save recovery codes and confirm access to email, password-manager vaults and work accounts.
- Software: list must-have applications, versions, plug-ins, fonts, templates and game launchers.
- Hardware: document printers, scanners, graphics tablets, audio equipment, displays and special keys.
- Network: record Wi-Fi credentials and any VPN, proxy or certificate settings required for work.
- Recovery: retain Windows recovery media or a manufacturer recovery method until the new system has passed your acceptance tests.
- Storage: check disk health and leave more free space than the published minimum when possible.
The reviewed operating-system pages do not prescribe a particular backup device or procedure, so choose a method appropriate to the value and size of your data rather than assuming the installer will protect it.
Choosing by priority
| Your priority | Most practical starting point | Reason and check |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar full desktop on modest hardware | Linux Mint | Its published baseline is 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, with 4 GB and 100 GB recommended; test drivers and applications |
| Current LTS desktop for development or broad desktop use | Ubuntu 26.04 LTS | Five years of updates and support through April 2031; plan around 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage for comfortable use |
| Mostly browser-based work on an older computer | ChromeOS Flex | Simple, web-centered environment; confirm the exact model is certified and has at least 4 GB RAM and 16 GB storage |
| Windows-only professional software or unsupported games | Keep Windows, use dual boot, or change hardware plans | Linux compatibility layers are not guarantees; test the exact application, title and peripheral |
| Apple-specific workflow | Buy supported Apple hardware running macOS | The available evidence does not establish a supported macOS installation on ordinary PCs |
Common failure modes and recovery choices
The USB will not boot
Recreate the installer with the operating system’s current instructions, try another USB port or drive, and check the firmware boot menu. If the computer uses a different boot mode or has restrictive firmware settings, consult its manufacturer documentation before changing settings. Do not erase the internal drive until the live session starts reliably.
Wi-Fi, graphics or audio is missing
Stay in the live session, identify the exact component and check the distribution’s driver tools and hardware documentation. Mint does not install proprietary ATI/Nvidia drivers by default. ChromeOS Flex users should first consult the certified-model feature notes; an uncertified model may never provide guaranteed behavior.
A required program does not work
Look for a supported web or native version, then test a compatibility layer only if the software vendor and community documentation support your use case. For work-critical software, retain Windows or choose hardware and an operating system that the vendor explicitly supports.
The computer feels slow
Compare actual memory and storage with the published requirements, close heavy browser tabs, check drive health and test an installed system rather than judging only from USB. ChromeOS Flex can reduce local overhead, while a full Linux desktop may require more resources for multitasking than a browser-only workload.

Choose Linux Mint when you want the most familiar low-resource general desktop and are prepared to verify drivers and applications. Choose Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS when its current support window, documented application ecosystem or development tooling matters more than Mint’s lower published baseline. Choose ChromeOS Flex when your essential work is web-based and your exact older computer appears on Google’s certified list. Keep Windows in a dual-boot arrangement or as a separate machine when a must-have application, game or peripheral has not passed an individual compatibility test.
