The right VMware Cloud alternative depends on whether you need to preserve VMware operations or are ready to leave the VMware hypervisor. Amazon Elastic VMware Service (EVS), Azure VMware Solution, and Google Cloud VMware Engine keep vSphere-based workloads largely intact. EC2, Azure-native services, Google Compute Engine, Nutanix Cloud Clusters, and hybrid infrastructure change the operating model. Decide those two questions separately, then compare licensing, responsibility, migration effort, resilience, regions, and the total cost of your actual workloads.
What counts as a VMware Cloud alternative?
“Alternative” covers two different strategies:
- VMware continuity: run VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and related tools on a hyperscaler. This minimizes application and process changes, but you still operate within VMware’s licensing and architecture.
- VMware exit: move virtual machines to a different hypervisor, cloud-native compute, managed platform services, or a private-cloud stack. This can reduce long-term VMware dependence, but it requires more redesign and operational change.
A cloud location does not automatically remove VMware licensing. Microsoft’s documentation says customers using hyperscaler services must purchase portable VCF licenses directly from Broadcom. Treat each provider’s product descriptions as vendor documentation, not as neutral proof of lower cost or better performance.

VMware continuity options
Amazon Elastic VMware Service
Amazon EVS runs VCF inside an Amazon VPC. AWS manages the underlying networking, VPC connectivity, bare-metal hosts and firmware upgrades, while the customer controls the VCF software stack. That includes installing, upgrading and patching VMware components, so EVS is not equivalent to a fully managed VMware service. See the Amazon EVS FAQ for the current responsibility split.
AWS currently lists i4i.metal and i7i.metal-24xl instance types for EVS. Broadcom recommends at least four nodes for a production environment, depending on the VCF release, storage architecture, NSX design and management-node choices. AWS states that an EVS environment supports up to 32 nodes. Instance types, limits and regional availability can change, so verify them for your account and target region before sizing.

Budget for VCF and Windows licensing where applicable, storage, network traffic, backup and disaster recovery, plus the staff time required to run VCF. EVS is most compelling when your team wants AWS infrastructure but must retain VMware tooling and application compatibility.
Azure VMware Solution
Azure VMware Solution provides a VMware environment on dedicated Azure infrastructure. Microsoft describes a stack that includes vSphere, vSAN, NSX and HCX, with Microsoft managing the service. It is intended for workloads that need VMware continuity while adopting Azure networking, identity, operations or adjacent services. Microsoft also cautions that Azure VMware Solution is not the best choice for every cloud strategy; a native Azure architecture may be more suitable when modernization is the goal. Read Microsoft’s strategy and adoption guidance when deciding between continuity and redesign.
Licensing changed materially:
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| November 1, 2025 | New Azure VMware Solution deployments require portable VCF licensing purchased directly from Broadcom; new node purchases no longer include a VCF license. |
| October 31, 2026 | Microsoft’s licensing reference says existing license-included pay-as-you-go deployments must transition. |
| August 30, 2027 | Affected license-included reserved instances must be exchanged for VCF BYOL reservations or moved off Azure VMware Solution. Microsoft also states that license-included service SKUs retire on this date. |
These dates apply to the documented licensing arrangements, not to an end of Azure VMware Solution itself. Microsoft presents portable VCF bring-your-own-license as the least disruptive continuation path, while also identifying Nutanix Cloud Clusters on Azure and Azure-native modernization as alternatives. Confirm your reservation type, deployment date and entitlement directly with Microsoft and Broadcom using the portable VCF licensing reference and license-included service retirement guidance.
Google Cloud VMware Engine
Google Cloud VMware Engine provides a VMware private cloud with managed lifecycle operations and migration resources. It suits organizations standardizing on Google Cloud while retaining vSphere-based applications, familiar management tools and VMware support requirements. Google’s private-cloud documentation distinguishes standard SLA-eligible deployments from smaller configurations.
The first standard cluster requires three nodes for SLA eligibility. A single-node private cloud is not SLA eligible, so it should not be compared with a three-node deployment as if resilience and service guarantees were identical. Check region and node availability, cluster minimums, licensing, networking and pricing before committing; those details vary by location and can change.

Moving workloads off VMware
AWS EC2 and managed services
AWS documents several migration paths: rehost VMware virtual machines on EC2, replatform or modernize with managed AWS services, and adopt alternatives such as Nutanix Cloud Clusters. Rehosting can reduce immediate application change, but it does not create a cloud-native architecture by itself. Modernization may remove hypervisor dependencies and improve use of managed databases, containers or serverless services, at the cost of refactoring and new operational skills.
For each application, map operating-system support, kernel or driver requirements, licensing, storage performance, network flows, identity integration, monitoring, backup and recovery. Establish a rollback point before migration and test conversion, boot, application integrity and performance in an isolated account.

Microsoft recommends considering Azure infrastructure and platform services when near-term modernization or long-term optimization outweighs VMware compatibility. Possible targets include Azure virtual machines, managed databases, containers and other platform services, but the correct destination depends on the application’s architecture.
Separate workloads that can be rehosted from those that need redesign. A stateless web tier may move first; tightly coupled systems, appliances, legacy licensing and latency-sensitive databases may require a staged approach. Keep VMware running for the systems that cannot yet move, and connect the environments with explicitly designed identity, DNS, routing and security controls.
Google Compute Engine
Google lists Compute Engine as a destination for VMware vSphere workloads. This route changes the virtualization and operations model while retaining Google Cloud as the landing zone. Validate guest operating-system support, conversion tooling, boot configuration, network interfaces, persistent-disk mapping, IP addressing, security policy and downtime. Private-cloud and hybrid choices
Nutanix Cloud Clusters
Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) is documented as an alternative virtualization and private-cloud operating model on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud. Microsoft identifies Nutanix Move as a migration tool for the Azure option. The exact experience depends on whether NC2 runs on owned hardware or a particular hyperscaler, so verify supported source and target environments, licensing, capacity, support boundaries and hardware requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →NC2 can be a fit when teams want a consistent Nutanix operating model across locations or want to reduce direct dependence on VMware. It is not automatically cheaper: include subscription or license costs, cloud hosts or hardware, storage, network traffic, support, migration labor and the cost of maintaining skills for the new stack.
On-premises and hybrid infrastructure
Some workloads should remain local because of regulatory controls, data residency, latency, disconnected operation or bandwidth limits. AWS identifies Outposts as a way to run AWS infrastructure on premises for these cases. A hybrid design can keep constrained systems local while moving suitable services to a public cloud, but it introduces shared responsibility for hardware lifecycle, physical resilience, connectivity, identity and monitoring.
Document which data must remain in a specific jurisdiction, which systems require millisecond-level locality, and which services are allowed to depend on a cloud control plane. Those constraints should eliminate unsuitable options before a price comparison.
How to compare providers fairly
Use the same workload inventory and assumptions for every option. A vendor’s promotional savings claim is not a neutral cross-cloud estimate, and no independent universal cost ranking is established for these services.

| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| VMware compatibility | Do applications, backup tools, monitoring, automation and vendor support require vSphere or VCF? |
| Licensing | Which VCF, Windows and application licenses are portable, expiring, included or separately purchased? |
| Migration effort | Is the move a rehost, replatform or refactor? What dependencies, downtime, conversion work and rollback steps exist? |
| Responsibility | Who patches VCF or the hypervisor, hosts, networking, firmware, security controls, backup and monitoring? |
| Availability | What regions and capacity are available? What node minimums apply, and is the selected topology SLA eligible? |
| Resilience | How will you handle backups, cross-zone or cross-region recovery, quorum, testing and data protection? |
| Economics | What are the recurring compute, storage, network, license, support and operations costs, plus migration and exit costs? |
| Strategic fit | Does the option support your cloud-native roadmap, data location, existing skills and supplier commitments? |
A workload-first migration method
- Inventory every dependency. Record VM CPU and memory, storage capacity and IOPS, operating system, application owner, network flows, identity integration, backup policy, recovery objectives and license constraints.
- Classify the workload. Mark it as VMware-dependent, rehostable, replatformable or a refactor candidate. Record compliance, latency and data-residency requirements.
- Choose a landing-zone pattern. Select VMware continuity, cloud-native compute and services, NC2/private cloud, or hybrid placement for each class rather than forcing one platform on every application.
- Model responsibilities. Write down who owns patching, upgrades, firmware, network controls, security monitoring, backup, disaster recovery and incident response. Do not assume “managed” covers the complete VMware stack; EVS, for example, leaves VCF software management with the customer.
- Validate technical feasibility. Check region and capacity, node minimums, supported operating systems, conversion tooling, storage performance, network reachability and identity integration. Build a pilot with representative applications.
- Run a total-cost model. Price the required nodes or VMs, storage, network egress, VCF and other licenses, support, migration labor, operations, facilities, reservations and eventual exit. Use actual consumption duration and growth assumptions.
- Plan migration waves. Start with low-risk systems, test backup and rollback, define a change window, and measure application health after cutover. Keep the source environment intact until recovery and business-owner acceptance criteria are met.
- Review the post-migration operating model. Confirm monitoring, patch schedules, access controls, capacity alerts, recovery tests and ownership before decommissioning VMware resources.
Costing Azure VMware Solution and other options
There is no meaningful single price for “a VMware alternative.” Microsoft identifies Azure VMware Solution host size and count, consumption duration and a portable VCF subscription as cost factors. Apply the same categories to every provider:
- Compute hosts or virtual machines sized for normal load, failover and maintenance headroom.
- Storage capacity, performance tier, snapshots, backup and replication.
- Network connectivity, inter-region traffic, internet egress and dedicated links.
- VCF, Windows, database, application and management-tool licenses.
- Migration discovery, conversion, testing, downtime planning and professional services.
- Operations: engineering labor, monitoring, security, patching, support and incident response.
- Resilience: secondary regions, spare capacity, backup retention and disaster-recovery exercises.
- Exit costs, including data transfer, application changes and contract or reservation obligations.
Use at least three demand scenarios—steady state, growth and disaster recovery—and document whether each figure is a recurring consumption charge, a reservation commitment or a one-time migration cost. Reconfirm current quotes and eligibility for your geography; provider prices, capacity and licensing rules are volatile.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming cloud hosting removes licensing
It does not. Azure’s current model requires portable VCF licensing for new deployments, and existing license-included arrangements have transition deadlines. Audit entitlements before signing a reservation or migration statement of work.
Calling every service “fully managed VMware”
Responsibility boundaries differ. AWS manages EVS infrastructure elements but leaves VCF installation, upgrades and patching to the customer. Azure describes Microsoft-managed Azure VMware Solution, while Google describes lifecycle management for VMware Engine. Obtain the current responsibility matrix for the exact service and release.
Comparing node counts without resilience context
A one-node Google Cloud VMware Engine private cloud is not SLA eligible, while the standard first cluster requires three nodes. Amazon EVS production guidance commonly starts at four nodes, subject to release and configuration. Compare usable capacity, failure tolerance and SLA conditions—not just raw host count.
Best Value
Rehosting without redesigning dependencies
A VM may boot successfully while its licensing server, DNS, backup system, storage latency or firewall path fails. Test the complete service chain and document rollback before moving a production wave.
Using a promotional saving as the business case
Provider marketing does not establish a neutral cross-cloud saving. Build the model from your inventory, measured utilization, license terms, migration effort and operating responsibilities.
Ignoring an eventual exit
Record how data, images, networking, licenses and automation would move again. Portable licensing, open formats, documented dependencies and tested exports reduce lock-in even when continuity is the immediate priority.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich option fits which situation?
- Need the least application change: compare Amazon EVS, Azure VMware Solution and Google Cloud VMware Engine using responsibility, licensing, region and resilience criteria.
- Need to leave VMware quickly: evaluate rehosting on EC2, Azure virtual machines or Compute Engine, then schedule modernization after stabilization.
- Want long-term platform modernization: target Azure-native, AWS managed services or Google Cloud services where refactoring effort is justified by the application’s roadmap.
- Want an alternative virtualization stack: assess NC2/private cloud with a complete licensing, support, capacity and migration model.
- Must retain local processing: design hybrid placement, including on-premises infrastructure or Outposts, and specify connectivity and control requirements.
The strongest decision is usually workload-specific: preserve VMware where compatibility and time-to-move dominate, modernize where application economics justify redesign, and keep constrained systems on private or hybrid infrastructure. Revisit the choice as licensing dates, regional capacity and application dependencies change.
