A game feels cyberpunk when advanced technology reshapes ordinary life while power, wealth, and safety remain unevenly distributed. Implants, hacking, networked systems, body modification, corporate control, dense cities, and precarious characters are recurring elements. None is mandatory on its own: neon signs or a futuristic city can create a cyberpunk look without addressing the social tensions that give the genre its meaning.
Cyberpunk is a relationship, not a checklist
Cyberpunk is best understood as a flexible science-fiction subgenre. There is no universally accepted test that a game must pass, and different games emphasize different conventions. The most useful shorthand is often “high tech, low life”: sophisticated tools and systems exist alongside insecurity, exploitation, restricted opportunity, or degraded living conditions.

That phrase is a starting point rather than an official rule. A game does not become cyberpunk merely because it contains robots, holograms, rain, or a futuristic skyline. The important question is how technology changes people’s choices and who benefits from that change. If advanced systems improve life for a powerful minority while leaving others with little control over their bodies, work, data, or neighborhoods, the game is engaging with a central cyberpunk concern.
What “high tech, low life” means in practice
Advanced technology reaches the body
Cyberpunk games commonly make technology personal. Cybernetic implants, prosthetic upgrades, sensory enhancements, and other forms of body modification can alter what a character can do. The body becomes a platform that can be repaired, upgraded, traded, regulated, or exploited. This creates practical game mechanics, but it also raises questions about consent and identity: is an enhancement a tool, a medical necessity, a status symbol, or a product someone is pressured to buy?

In an illustrative cyberpunk design, an upgrade is rarely just a numerical bonus. It can change movement, combat, information gathering, or social access. The more deeply a game connects those systems to the character’s circumstances, the more clearly technology becomes part of the story rather than surface decoration.
Networks and hacking mediate everyday life
Hacking is another recurring feature because it turns invisible infrastructure into something the player can confront. Security cameras, databases, communications networks, automated defenses, and corporate systems can become routes, obstacles, or sources of leverage. A hacking mechanic asks who owns information, who is watched, and whether access is a form of power.
Cyberpunk 2077’s official game description presents hacking skills alongside body-enhancing implants, upgradeable weapons, and skills or perks that shape a player’s approach. Those systems show how a game can make technology both a fictional subject and a way to play. A player may solve a problem through force, stealth, technical manipulation, or a specialized build, making the relationship with technology interactive.

Weapons and tools are configurable
Sophisticated weapons, modular equipment, and upgrade systems fit the genre because they show technology being customized for survival or profit. The key distinction is context. A futuristic weapon in a conventional space adventure may simply be an instrument of action. In a cyberpunk game, equipment can also expose a market, a security regime, or a social divide: who can afford the latest system, who repairs it, and who bears the risks when it fails?
Power is concentrated, and access is unequal
Corporate influence supplies the social conflict
Cyberpunk settings often place corporations or similarly powerful institutions above ordinary citizens. These organizations may control employment, housing, security, media, data, or the infrastructure on which everyone depends. Their authority can be legal, economic, technological, or all three at once.

CD PROJEKT RED described Cyberpunk 2077’s setting as a “corporate-ruled future.” That wording identifies a political condition, not merely an art direction. When a game presents corporations as institutions capable of shaping whole districts or determining people’s opportunities, advanced technology becomes inseparable from questions of accountability and control.
Stratification should be visible in play and place
Economic inequality is more convincing when the game lets players see or experience its effects. Some characters may have secure access to medicine, implants, information, and private security, while others live with debt, unsafe work, unreliable services, or constant surveillance. Exploitation can appear in missions, dialogue, prices, contracts, or the consequences of refusing an offer.

A character may make meaningful decisions but still operate inside systems designed by more powerful groups. That tension—choice within constrained conditions—is more characteristic of cyberpunk than a simple story in which one hero defeats an obviously evil corporation and restores a perfectly equal society.
The setting turns the contrast into something visible
Dense future cities
Urban density is a common stage because it places incompatible lives close together. High-rise offices, crowded streets, entertainment zones, markets, clinics, transit systems, and industrial areas can coexist within a short distance. The city becomes a network of borders: some physical, some economic, and some enforced by software.
PlayStation describes Night City as a place obsessed with power, glamour, and body modification. That description links the city’s appearance to its values. A skyline filled with advertising and luxury is more meaningful when the same city also contains people who cannot share in that prosperity.

Contrasting districts and outskirts
Cyberpunk settings often make inequality legible through geography. Corporate districts may feature controlled access, polished towers, and advanced services. Industrial zones, crowded neighborhoods, or rural edges may have fewer protections and more visible hazards. CD PROJEKT RED’s official material contrasts the high rises of Corpo Plaza with the Badlands outskirts, providing a clear example of how one game can stage social differences through space.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis contrast does not require every game to use the same city layout. A cyberpunk story could take place in a single building, a virtual environment, or a dispersed network if it still shows how technology and power shape where people can live and move.
Human identity and agency are at stake
Body modification naturally raises the question of what counts as human. If memories, senses, limbs, or decision-making processes can be altered, the boundary between person and machine becomes difficult to define. A game may explore that issue directly, or it may leave it implicit in character design and mechanics.
Other useful questions include:
- Who owns a person’s biometric information, implants, or digital profile?
- Can someone meaningfully refuse an upgrade when employment or survival depends on it?
- Does replacing part of the body expand freedom, create dependence, or do both?
- Who is responsible when an automated system makes a harmful decision?
- Does technological progress improve life broadly, or mainly increase the power of institutions that already dominate?
These are interpretive questions, not requirements. A game can be cyberpunk without answering all of them, provided it uses technology to examine human vulnerability, autonomy, or social control in some meaningful way.
Player choice is often part of the genre’s meaning
Many cyberpunk games connect their themes to player agency. Character builds, hacking options, weapon choices, alliances, and consequential decisions can let players test different responses to an unequal system. One player may rely on technical access, another on combat, and another on negotiation or stealth. The design can then ask whether personal adaptability is enough to overcome structural power.

Choice does not have to produce a revolutionary ending to matter. A decision may determine which group benefits, which neighborhood suffers, or what compromise the protagonist accepts. The important point is that the player experiences trade-offs rather than receiving a simple lecture about technology.
Why neon alone does not make a game cyberpunk
Neon signage, rain-slick streets, dark interiors, holograms, chrome, and electronic music are recognizable visual signals. They can quickly communicate a futuristic urban mood, but they are aesthetic shorthand, not a definition. A game that copies those images while ignoring inequality, corporate influence, bodily autonomy, or technological dependence may be cyberpunk-inspired in appearance without engaging deeply with cyberpunk themes.
The reverse is also true. A game can qualify as cyberpunk without using a familiar neon palette. A muted, brightly lit, rural, or predominantly virtual setting can still explore the same relationship between advanced systems and constrained lives. Evaluate what technology does to people, not only what the environment looks like.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, narrative-driven role-playing game set in the universe of the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop role-playing system, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s 2018 announcement. Its official game site presents a dark future in which players navigate Night City, make consequential choices, develop skills, use hacking, modify their bodies, and upgrade weapons.
Those elements make it a useful case study because they operate at several levels at once:

| Cyberpunk convention | How the game illustrates it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Technology changes bodies | Body-enhancing implants are part of the character’s capabilities. | The body becomes customizable and tied to questions of identity, access, and control. |
| Technology changes tactics | Hacking, skills, perks, and upgradeable weapons shape playstyle. | Technology is experienced through player decisions rather than shown only in scenery. |
| Power is concentrated | The setting is described as corporate-ruled. | Individual choices take place inside institutions with greater resources and influence. |
| Social contrast is spatial | Night City includes corporate high rises such as Corpo Plaza and outlying Badlands areas. | Different districts make unequal living conditions visible. |
| Agency has consequences | The game emphasizes player choices and a range of builds. | Players can explore how different forms of agency work within a restrictive system. |
This example demonstrates several conventions, but it is not a template that every cyberpunk game must copy. A smaller game may focus almost entirely on surveillance or labor, while another may emphasize identity and machine embodiment.
A practical framework for judging another game
When deciding whether an unfamiliar title is cyberpunk, consider the following dimensions together rather than counting isolated features:
| Dimension | Questions to ask | Strong evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced technology | Does technology alter bodies, work, communication, combat, or daily survival? | Upgrades and networks affect both mechanics and the story’s conflicts. |
| Power and inequality | Who owns infrastructure and information? Who carries the costs? | Corporate or institutional power limits ordinary characters’ options. |
| Urban or social setting | Does the environment show different classes, districts, or levels of access? | Prosperous and precarious spaces exist in visible tension. |
| Human-machine identity | Does modification challenge ideas of personhood, consent, or autonomy? | The game makes bodily or digital change consequential. |
| Player agency | Can players choose methods, allegiances, or compromises? | Different playstyles reveal trade-offs within the system. |
| Purpose of the style | Are neon and futuristic visuals connected to the social themes? | Aesthetic details reinforce questions about technology and power. |
This is an interpretive framework, not a published scoring system. A title does not need a high mark in every row. The more important test is whether its technology, social order, setting, and character agency reinforce one another.

Common borderline cases
A futuristic action game with no social critique
Advanced weapons and a futuristic city may make a game science fiction, but they do not automatically make it cyberpunk. If the story treats technology as neutral equipment and never examines who controls it or who is excluded, the cyberpunk connection may be limited to style.
A story about inequality with little technology
Economic exploitation alone is not enough either. Cyberpunk usually depends on technology being central to the way power operates or to the way characters experience the world. A social drama set in an ordinary present-day environment may explore similar inequality without belonging to the cyberpunk subgenre.
A game focused on artificial intelligence or virtual worlds
Artificial intelligence, simulations, or digital identities can support cyberpunk themes when they affect autonomy, ownership, labor, surveillance, or access. Their presence is significant when the game connects them to lived conditions and unequal power, not simply because the technology is advanced.
The shortest reliable test
Ask three questions: What technology is changing people’s lives? Who controls that technology and receives its benefits? What does the change cost ordinary characters? If the game makes those questions central through its world, story, or mechanics, it is engaging with cyberpunk. If it offers only futuristic decoration, it may be cyberpunk in look but not in substance.
