There is no universally best lunar-dust material. The most promising choices depend on whether you need to dissipate electrostatic charge, make particles less likely to stick, or actively move dust away. NASA is evaluating statically dissipative coatings and films, silicone, microstructured and biomimetic surfaces, and active systems such as electrodynamic dust shields (EDS). Each has different risks involving abrasion, dust embedding, thermal cycling, power, grounding, mass and service life.
First, separate charge control from adhesion control
Lunar dust mitigation has two related but distinct objectives. Charge-control materials reduce the buildup of electrostatic charge on a surface. In a dry, vacuum-like environment, less charge can mean less electrostatic attraction between dust and the surface. Low-adhesion materials change the physical interface so particles are less likely to remain attached, including by reducing van der Waals interactions. A material can perform well on one objective and poorly on the other.

NASA’s guidance treats these as application-specific engineering choices rather than a single coating problem. A surface that sheds loose particles may still fail after repeated abrasion, thermal cycling or particle embedding. Conversely, a coating that dissipates charge may not prevent mechanically trapped dust from remaining in scratches, seams or porous fibers.

Material and system options at a glance
| Approach | Primary mechanism | Potentially useful on | Main limitations identified by NASA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Statically dissipative ESD coatings and films | Reduce charge accumulation and electrostatic attraction | Dry exposed surfaces, equipment housings, films and selected optical or mechanical interfaces | Charge reduction is not a guarantee of low adhesion; electrical integration, grounding and discharge safety must be demonstrated |
| Silicone | Lower particle adhesion at the surface | Selected protective or flexible surfaces where embedded particles will not damage a critical interface | Sharp dust can become embedded and then damage sensitive surfaces |
| Microstructured or biomimetic surfaces | Engineer contact geometry to reduce van der Waals adhesion | Specialized surfaces, optical interfaces and other areas where texture can be controlled | Texture must survive abrasion, contamination and manufacturing constraints; performance is use-specific |
| Superhydrophobic, peel-away and gradient coatings | Alter wetting, surface energy or the removable outer layer | Concept studies and selected contamination-control applications | Hydrophobicity alone does not solve lunar-dust adhesion; lunar vacuum and abrasive dust require direct testing |
| Electrodynamic dust shields | Changing electric fields lift and transport particles | Instrument windows, radiators, solar-facing surfaces and other surfaces that can integrate electrodes | Requires electrodes, high-voltage electronics, power, insulation and safe grounding; not a passive coating |
| Handheld ionization | Neutralize charge and help remove particles | Maintenance or crew-operated cleaning concepts | NASA lists the lunar ionizer at technology readiness level (TRL) 4, so it remains development-stage |

St andard-dissipative ESD coatings and films
NASA describes statically dissipative electrostatic-discharge coatings and films as less likely to accumulate charge. In a dry environment, that can reduce the electrostatic component of dust attraction. This is a mechanism-based rationale, not a blanket performance claim for every lunar surface. The coating must maintain its electrical properties after ultraviolet exposure, radiation, vacuum, abrasion and temperature swings, and it must be compatible with the substrate and nearby electronics.

Electrical design is part of the material choice. A dissipative layer needs a controlled path for charge to leave without creating an unintended discharge through a sensor, cable or crew interface. NASA cautions that high-voltage dust-removal systems can introduce grounding and discharge risks for sensitive equipment. A passive film may reduce that complexity, but only if its resistance, continuity and bonding remain within the mission’s electrical design limits.
Silicone: useful candidate with a specific failure mode
NASA’s Dust Busters specification sheet reports that silicone has been shown to reduce dust adhesion. It also gives a critical warning: because lunar particles are sharp, dust embedded in silicone can become damaging to sensitive surfaces. That makes silicone a candidate rather than a universal solution.
Embedding risk matters most where a surface must remain optically clear, smooth, flexible or dimensionally precise. A silicone layer that initially releases particles may accumulate a population of sharp grains under repeated contact. Engineers therefore need to test not only first-pass adhesion but also adhesion after abrasion, repeated cleaning, thermal cycling and simulated transport or deployment loads. A result that looks good on a fresh coupon may not represent a visor, seal, hinge or window after months of operation.

Microstructured and biomimetic surfaces
NASA lists lotus-leaf-like microscopic or nanoscopic structures as a way to limit van der Waals adhesion. Biomimetic engineered surfaces are part of NASA’s active and passive development work. The idea is to reduce the real contact area or create a geometry from which particles are easier to dislodge.
These surfaces have a built-in trade-off: the features that reduce contact can also be vulnerable to crushing, clogging or abrasion. A texture designed for an optical window may not be suitable for a boot sole or a mechanism exposed to sliding contact. Manufacturing repeatability, contamination of the texture and the ability to inspect it after use all belong in the qualification plan.

Superhydrophobic, peel-away and gradient concepts
NASA’s Dust Busters material lists superhydrophobic coatings, peel-away coatings and gradient surfaces among dust-mitigation concepts. Superhydrophobicity is associated with water-based contaminants and capillary forces in the reference material; it should not be presented as proof that a coating will repel lunar dust in vacuum. Lunar-dust adhesion involves electrostatics, van der Waals forces, mechanical interlocking and abrasion without liquid water.
Peel-away layers can offer a sacrificial surface for a deployment or transit phase, while gradient surfaces can create a directional change in surface energy or texture. Both concepts introduce integration questions: how the layer is removed, where the removed material goes, whether the underlying surface remains clean, and whether the process can be performed without exposing a crew member or instrument to a cloud of particles.
Active systems that remove dust instead of merely resisting it
Electrodynamic dust shields
An electrodynamic dust shield uses embedded electrodes driven by changing high-voltage signals. The resulting electric fields lift and transport charged or polarizable particles across the surface and away from a protected area. Because the electrodes and drive electronics are part of the system, EDS is an active dust-removal device, not a coating.
NASA’s lunar-surface technology information reports that an EDS removed regolith from various surfaces during Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 in 2025. That is a mission demonstration showing that the approach can work in a lunar setting; it is not a published universal removal percentage or proof that one electrode layout fits every window, radiator, textile or mechanism. The same NASA material says EDS technology is licensed by multiple commercial partners, but no single commercial implementation is established as best for all surfaces.
EDS design requires a continuous power budget, high-voltage insulation, electrode routing, control electronics and a safe return path for charge. Electrodes can also change the surface stack-up, optical properties, flexibility or thermal behavior. The approach is attractive when a surface is mission-critical and can accommodate wiring; it is less attractive where added mass, power or complexity outweighs the dust risk.

Handheld ionization
NASA’s technology catalog describes a Lunar Electrostatics and Dust Mitigation tool as a handheld static ionizer intended to neutralize electrostatic charge and help remove dust. NASA labels it TRL 4. That rating places it in development rather than routine operational hardware, so ordinary anti-static guns or household sprays should not be treated as lunar-validated substitutes.

NASA’s specifications also identify brushes, direct-current electrostatic removal, vacuum, gas jets, spinning surfaces and vibration. Each method solves a different physical problem:
- Brushes can dislodge loose material but may scratch critical surfaces or grind particles into a substrate.
- Vacuum and gas jets require pumps, tanks or flow hardware and can redistribute dust into nearby joints, seals or optics.
- Spinning surfaces and vibration use motion to exceed the forces holding particles in place, but moving parts add wear and control complexity.
- Direct-current electrostatic removal can move charged particles but must be engineered around discharge and grounding risks.
What performance target is NASA using?
NASA’s Dust Busters specification seeks a greater than 90% reduction in dust relative to a reference surface, with 50% as the minimum, for lunar-dust-simulant particles smaller than 50 micrometres. This is a procurement or development target, not a published result for a named coating or material. It should not be quoted as proof that silicone, an ESD film or a biomimetic texture already achieves that number in flight.
Any reported percentage needs its test conditions attached: particle-size distribution, loading method, electrical state, pressure, temperature, surface orientation, cleaning cycle and definition of “remaining” dust. Without those details, two apparently similar percentages may describe different tests and cannot establish a head-to-head ranking.
Choose by application, not by material name
Optical windows, visors and sensors
Optical surfaces need low haze, scratch resistance, stable transmission and a way to remove embedded particles without polishing damage. A microstructured texture or EDS may be more suitable than a soft silicone layer if sharp-grain embedding is unacceptable. The qualification plan should include optical transmission before and after abrasion, dust exposure and cleaning.

Radiators and solar-facing hardware
Radiators and solar-facing surfaces are sensitive to changes in thermal emissivity, absorptivity and electrical charging. An EDS can actively clear a critical area but adds power and high-voltage hardware. A passive dissipative film may simplify operation yet still require proof that its optical and thermal properties remain stable after dust and radiation exposure.
Spacesuit textiles and inflatable habitats
Textiles and flexible membranes must bend, fold, seal and survive repeated contact. A texture that works on a rigid coupon may collapse in fabric, while a particulate-shedding layer may crack during inflation or flexing. NASA’s DMEMS project is testing samples for spacesuit textiles, inflatable habitats, visors and windows, reflecting these different mechanical requirements.
Seals, joints and mechanisms
For seals and moving mechanisms, preventing ingress may matter more than making the exposed surface dust-repellent. Dust can abrade sliding interfaces, change clearances and damage lubricants. A surface treatment must be evaluated alongside joint geometry, protective covers, purge or cleaning procedures and the required service life.

- Define the failure you are preventing. State whether the concern is optical obscuration, electrostatic interference, thermal degradation, seal leakage, abrasive wear or loss of mobility.
- Classify the surface. Record whether it is rigid, flexible, porous, conductive, transparent, moving or crew-contacting.
- Select the mechanism. Use charge dissipation when electrostatic attraction is dominant, a low-adhesion interface when particles must not remain attached, and active transport when the surface must be repeatedly cleared.
- Screen integration constraints. Check allowable mass, power, voltage, wiring, grounding, thickness, flexibility, outgassing and optical or thermal changes.
- Test realistic dust and damage modes. Include particles below 50 micrometres, sharp-particle abrasion, repeated exposure, vibration, thermal cycling, vacuum and cleaning cycles appropriate to the mission.
- Measure both initial and aged performance. Record charge decay, retained dust, adhesion force or removal fraction, then repeat after abrasion and environmental conditioning.
- Check collateral effects. Inspect scratches, embedded particles, electrical leakage, altered emissivity, haze, seal wear and dust transferred to neighboring hardware.
- Compare the whole system. Include service life, maintenance, power, mass, complexity and consequences of failure rather than choosing the highest single removal percentage.
Why no universal ranking exists yet
NASA’s Lunar Dust Mitigation: A Guide and Reference frames the broad decision as whether to avoid exposure, remove dust or tolerate it. The right answer depends on required service life, dust effects, critical risks, mass and system complexity. Those variables differ radically between a camera window, a radiator, a spacesuit fabric and a bearing seal.
NASA’s DMEMS testing program is examining adhesion, abrasion, erosion, charge dissipation and thermal tolerance across many samples. That breadth indicates that durability and environmental compatibility remain central questions. Earth-based dust tests, household anti-static treatments and generic silicone products cannot be assumed to reproduce lunar vacuum, charging, radiation, abrasive mineralogy or thermal cycling.
Best Value
Key hazards and common mistakes
- Calling an EDS a coating: EDS needs electrodes, high-voltage drive and system-level safety analysis.
- Treating silicone as permanently non-stick: embedded sharp grains can turn a compliant layer into a source of damage.
- Equating hydrophobicity with lunar-dust resistance: water-repellent behavior addresses liquid-related forces that may not dominate in lunar vacuum.
- Using an unqualified anti-static product: a terrestrial spray may outgas, degrade, contaminate optics or fail to dissipate charge after radiation and abrasion.
- Reporting a removal percentage without conditions: particle size, loading, pressure and aging determine what the number means.
- Ignoring where removed dust goes: active transport can protect one area while depositing particles in a seal, connector or neighboring sensor.
Bottom line for designers
For charge accumulation, start with a qualified statically dissipative ESD coating or film and verify its electrical path over the full environmental life. For passive adhesion reduction, investigate silicone and engineered microstructured or biomimetic surfaces, but treat abrasion and particle embedding as first-order failure modes. For mission-critical surfaces that must be cleared repeatedly, evaluate an electrodynamic dust shield or another active method, accepting the added power, high-voltage, mass and integration burden. NASA’s evidence supports a portfolio of application-specific solutions—not a single material that is best everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NASA identify one coating as the best for lunar dust?
No. NASA describes several candidate materials and systems and emphasizes that performance depends on the surface, environment, durability requirements and system trade-offs.
Is the 90% figure the measured performance of silicone or an ESD film?
No. Greater than 90% reduction, with 50% minimum, is a NASA target relative to a reference surface for simulant particles smaller than 50 micrometres. It is not attributed to a named material in the cited specification.
