When Windows audio fails, the lasting fix is usually a sequence rather than a single volume change: select the correct output device, correct the affected app’s route in Volume mixer, disable enhancements, test another default format, run Microsoft’s audio diagnostics, and only then repair drivers or audio services. Windows 11 and Windows 10 expose these controls in different places, and Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
Start with the output device Windows is actually using
A normal-looking speaker icon does not prove that sound is going to the speakers or headphones you want. Windows can have several valid endpoints at once: built-in speakers, a 3.5 mm headset, a USB headset, a Bluetooth device, an HDMI monitor, or a dock. The selected endpoint is also separate from an individual app’s route, so check both before changing drivers.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, monitor, headset, or other device that should play sound.
- Play a test sound or a short media clip. If the device has a hardware mute switch or volume wheel, make sure it is unmuted and turned up.
You can reach the same connected-device list faster by selecting the speaker control on the taskbar and opening the device selector next to the volume slider. This is the first check when more than one output is connected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows 10
- Select the speaker icon in the taskbar.
- Open the device list above the volume slider and choose the intended output.
- If the endpoint does not stay selected, open the classic sound controls: right-click the speaker icon, choose Sounds, open the Playback tab, select the device, and choose Set Default.
Windows 10’s labels and legacy Playback dialog differ from Windows 11, but the principle is the same: the endpoint marked as default must be the one physically connected to the speakers or headphones you are listening to.

Fix an app that is silent while Windows sounds still work
If notification sounds or another application play normally but a browser, game, meeting client, or media player is silent, do not start by reinstalling the audio driver. The app may be muted or assigned to another output.
Use Volume mixer in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the silent application.
- Raise its volume slider and confirm that its speaker icon is not muted.
- Check the app’s Output device. Set it to Default or to the same physical device selected under the main Sound page.
- Close and reopen the app. Some programs read the output choice only when they start.
Use the mixer in Windows 10
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and choose Open Volume mixer.
- Raise the affected application’s slider and unmute it.
- For per-app routing, open Settings > System > Sound > App volume and device preferences and verify the app’s output device.
Each app has its own volume setting. A master-volume increase cannot correct an application that is set to zero or routed to a disconnected monitor. This explains the common pattern in which system audio works while one program remains silent.
Turn off audio enhancements before changing anything permanent
Enhancement effects can lower perceived volume or introduce distortion, crackling, pumping, or other processing artifacts. They are reversible, so disabling them is a low-risk diagnostic step.
Windows 11 path
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the current output device.
- Find Audio enhancements and set it to Off.
- Play the same audio again and compare the result.
Windows 10 path
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select Device properties for the output.
- Open Additional device properties.
- On the Enhancements tab, select Disable all enhancements, then apply the change.
If the problem disappears, leave enhancements disabled or enable them one at a time to identify the effect causing trouble. If there is no change, keep the setting off while testing the next step so two variables do not change at once.

Test a different default audio format
An output device and its driver negotiate a sample rate and bit depth. A format that the endpoint or driver handles poorly can produce quiet, distorted, or low-quality audio even when the volume controls are correct.
Change the format in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the output device.
- Expand Advanced or open the device’s advanced properties.
- Under Default format, choose another available format.
- Apply the setting and test speech, music, and a system sound.
Change the format in Windows 10
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and choose Sounds.
- On the Playback tab, double-click the output device.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Choose a different entry under Default Format, apply it, and test.
Use the same test material after each change. If one format sounds normal and another crackles or is unusually quiet, keep the working format. If every format behaves the same, restore a sensible default and continue troubleshooting rather than cycling through settings indefinitely.
Run Windows’ audio diagnostics
Windows 11
Start with the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help application. It checks common output, volume, and driver conditions and can apply supported corrections. You can also open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters to view available diagnostic tools.

Windows 10
Use the audio troubleshooting flow offered through Get Help or the Sound settings’ troubleshooting option. Follow the prompts while the affected device is connected and powered on; disconnecting it during the scan can make Windows diagnose the wrong endpoint.

Diagnostics are most useful after selecting the intended output and checking Volume mixer. Otherwise, the tool may report that the selected device is working while the actual problem is an app routed elsewhere.
Repair a missing or vanished output device
If the desired speakers, headset, HDMI monitor, or USB audio device is absent from the Output list, a volume adjustment cannot fix it. Windows may not detect an output when its driver is missing, outdated, disabled, or failing to load.
Check detection and enablement
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for the audio hardware. A down-arrow icon indicates that the device is disabled; right-click it and choose Enable device.
- If the device is not listed, open View > Show hidden devices and inspect the list again.
- Restart Windows after enabling or reconnecting the hardware.
For a USB, Bluetooth, or HDMI endpoint, also check the physical connection: reseat the cable, try another USB port, wake or power on the monitor, or reconnect the paired device. A device that never appears in Device Manager may have a connection, power, firmware, or hardware issue rather than a Windows volume problem.

Update or reinstall the audio driver
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device under Sound, video and game controllers.
- Choose Update driver and allow Windows to search for an available driver.
- If the issue began after an update and the option is available, open Properties > Driver and try Roll Back Driver.
- If the device remains missing or malfunctioning, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and let Windows redetect it. Use the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s driver package when Windows does not restore a working driver.
Do not uninstall multiple unrelated devices at once. Change one device, restart, and verify whether the intended output returns before making another change.

Restart audio services for a one-app or intermittent failure
When hardware is visible and most applications work, restarting the Windows audio services can be safer than replacing the driver.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
- Restart Windows Audio Endpoint Builder the same way.
- Reopen the affected application and test its output.
These services coordinate application streams and endpoint access. Restarting them may close or interrupt active audio sessions, so save work in recording or meeting applications first.
Choose the right output connection
Windows does not rank 3.5 mm, USB, Bluetooth, and HDMI universally. Each connection has different detection, routing, driver, and hardware-control behavior.
| Connection | How it appears in Windows | Routing and driver considerations | Hardware controls and common checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm analog | Usually appears as the computer’s speakers or headphone jack, not as a separately named digital device. | Uses the computer’s analog audio hardware and its driver; app routing normally follows that endpoint. | Check the plug, jack, inline mute, and headphone volume. A partially inserted plug can cause one-channel or distorted sound. |
| USB audio | Normally appears as a distinct USB headset, DAC, speaker, or similar output under Sound. | Often has its own driver or firmware. Confirm Windows and the app both select the USB endpoint. | Check the device’s physical mute and volume controls, cable, power, and USB port. |
| Bluetooth | Appears as a paired output device after it is connected, not merely paired. | Windows may expose different profiles for high-quality playback and microphone use. Recheck the selected output after a call or profile change. | Confirm charge, connection status, hardware mute, and that the device is not connected to another host. |
| HDMI or DisplayPort | Often appears under the monitor, television, or graphics adapter’s name. | The display must support audio and be selected as the Windows output. An app can still be routed to another endpoint. | Check the display’s own volume and mute, input selection, cable, and power state. |
When comparing devices, verify whether the desired endpoint appears under Windows Output, supports per-app routing, requires a separate driver, and has independent mute or volume controls. Those practical differences matter more than a generic claim that one connector is always better.

Follow the symptom-specific path
No sound from speakers or wired headphones
- Select the intended endpoint under Sound and confirm it is the default device.
- Check the physical mute, inline controls, amplifier, monitor, or headphone volume.
- Raise the master volume and verify the app is not muted in Volume mixer.
- Turn audio enhancements off and test another default format.
- Run Get Help audio diagnostics.
- If the device is absent, inspect Device Manager and the cable or jack.
System audio works, but one app is silent
- Open Volume mixer and raise the app’s slider.
- Unmute the app and set its Output device to Default or the active endpoint.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder if the app still cannot create an audio stream.
- Change drivers only if multiple applications or the device itself are also failing.
Audio is quiet
- Check the app slider, master volume, and the device’s physical volume control.
- Confirm the app is not routed to a monitor, dock, or other endpoint with its own low volume.
- Turn enhancements off.
- Test another default format.
- Check speaker balance or headset controls in the device properties if one side is unusually quiet.
Audio is distorted or crackling
- Disable audio enhancements.
- Try another default format.
- Reconnect USB, Bluetooth, or HDMI hardware and test a different port or cable where available.
- Close other applications that may be taking exclusive control of the endpoint.
- Restart the audio services, then update or roll back the driver if the problem persists.
The output disappeared after an update
- Restart Windows and reconnect the endpoint.
- Check Device Manager for a disabled, hidden, or driver-error device.
- Use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when Windows offers it and the timing matches the update.
- Otherwise update or reinstall the correct driver, then set the output as default again.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The sound controls can still function, but an unresolved driver or compatibility problem may be harder to correct on that operating system.
A clean order for changing settings
Use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Select the physical output and set it as default.
- Check master volume, hardware mute, and the affected app in Volume mixer.
- Turn audio enhancements off.
- Test another default format.
- Run Get Help diagnostics.
- Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder for an app-specific or intermittent failure.
- Inspect Device Manager, enable the device, and update, roll back, or reinstall its driver only when detection or multiple-app failures point to the device layer.
After each step, test the same application and the same output. This makes it clear which setting solved the problem and makes it easy to reverse a change that worsened the sound.

Consider another endpoint only after confirming that Windows detects the existing one and that its app route, enhancements, format, and driver are correct. A USB audio device or HDMI-capable display can provide a different output path when an analog jack, internal speakers, or an existing port is defective, but it does not repair a muted application or an incorrect Volume mixer route. Check the connector, operating-system compatibility, required driver, independent hardware controls, and whether the device appears in Windows Output before buying or installing anything.
