Windows 10 vs Windows 11: Key Facts for Your 2026 Upgrade Decision

Windows 10 still works, but standard support has ended. Check whether your PC qualifies for Windows 11, how the free upgrade works, and when ESU or replacement is the better option.

Windows 10 still runs, but its standard support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, check your exact PC with Microsoft PC Health Check: if it qualifies, you can generally upgrade from Windows 10 Home or Pro to the matching Windows 11 edition at no charge. If it does not qualify, consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) may provide a temporary security-update bridge, or you can move to a Windows 11-capable PC.

What changed for Windows 10 in 2026?

Windows 10 version 22H2 reached the end of general support on October 14, 2025. The operating system does not stop working on that date, but standard support no longer provides regular security updates, feature updates, or ordinary technical assistance. Microsoft warns that unsupported PCs become more vulnerable to viruses and malware. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance explains the effect on Windows 10 devices.

This article addresses ordinary Windows 10 Home and Pro PCs. Enterprise, LTSC, and organization-managed devices can have different lifecycle or licensing terms; check the applicable Microsoft lifecycle information or ask the organization’s administrator. Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle announcement gives the general end-of-support date.

Windows 10 vs Windows 11: the practical differences

Decision point Windows 10 Windows 11
Support General support for version 22H2 ended October 14, 2025. Consumer ESU is a separate, time-limited option. Receives yearly feature releases and monthly quality updates. Support dates depend on the installed release and edition.
Hardware Continues to run on existing compatible Windows 10 hardware. Requires supported hardware, including a compatible processor, TPM 2.0, and UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot.
Upgrade cost Keeping the current installation does not require buying an OS upgrade, but standard updates have ended. Eligible Windows 10 Home and Pro PCs can upgrade to the corresponding Windows 11 edition at no charge.
Interface and habits Retains the familiar Start menu, taskbar, Live Tiles, and Tablet Mode. Changes the Start menu and taskbar; Live Tiles and Tablet Mode are gone, and taskbar alignment is limited to the bottom.
When replacement makes sense May serve temporarily, but without ESU it lacks regular security updates. A Windows 11-capable PC is the option when current hardware fails compatibility checks or cannot meet ongoing needs.

Windows 11 is not a single fixed support window: Home and Pro releases have a 24-month servicing timeline, while Enterprise, Enterprise multi-session, Education, and IoT Enterprise releases have 36 months. Check the support date for the specific release installed rather than assuming every Windows 11 PC has the same remaining support.

Can your PC run Windows 11?

Run Microsoft PC Health Check on the device you plan to keep. Compatibility is specific to the machine, and a recent purchase or a Windows 10 installation does not by itself prove eligibility. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and system requirements list these minimums:

  • A compatible 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores.
  • 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
  • UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot and TPM version 2.0.
  • DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
  • An HD (720p) display larger than 9 inches diagonally.

PC Health Check assesses the device but does not check the graphics card or display, so review those requirements and the manufacturer’s compatibility information as well. Minimum specifications establish eligibility, not a guarantee of good performance for every app or workload. Requirements for particular capabilities may be higher; for example, Copilot+ PCs are a separate class, not the baseline needed to run Windows 11.

  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

Is the Windows 11 upgrade free?

Microsoft says an eligible Windows 10 Home or Pro installation can upgrade to the matching Windows 11 edition at no charge. For the Windows Update route, the PC must be running Windows 10 version 2004 or later. Do not buy a Windows license or replacement PC until you have checked the actual device and its available upgrade offer.

  1. Back up important files. Make sure you can access your account and any recovery keys, and check that essential apps and peripherals have Windows 11 support.
  2. Run PC Health Check or consult the PC maker’s compatibility information. Review the processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics, and display.
  3. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. If the PC passes Microsoft’s checks and meets the upgrade prerequisites, Windows Update can offer the upgrade.
  4. Follow the offered installation steps, then verify activation, Windows Update, drivers, restored files, accessibility settings, and the apps and peripherals you rely on.

Do not assume a speed improvement from changing operating systems: performance depends on the particular PC, its configuration, and the workload.

What if the PC is not eligible?

Use consumer ESU as a temporary bridge

Microsoft describes consumer ESU coverage through October 12, 2027, on its current end-of-support page. ESU supplies critical and important security updates; it does not restore feature updates, non-security fixes, or ordinary technical support. Microsoft lists three enrollment options for eligible personal-use devices: syncing PC settings at no additional cost, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time payment of $30 USD plus applicable tax. Availability, enrollment terms, and pricing can vary by region. Check the live Microsoft end-of-support page for current terms before enrolling.

Replace the PC when support or workload requires it

If the machine cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, cannot reliably run the software you need, or must remain supported beyond the temporary ESU period, compare Windows 11-capable PCs. Verify the exact model’s processor and Windows 11 eligibility rather than relying on a product’s age or appearance. A replacement is a hardware decision as well as an operating-system decision, so account for your apps, peripherals, accessibility setup, and expected workload.

What to check before and after changing Windows

Before upgrading or replacing

  • Back up files and confirm you can sign in to your Microsoft account and retrieve recovery keys.
  • List essential applications and check their Windows 11 support with the software providers.
  • Check printers, scanners, specialist input devices, and other peripherals for compatible drivers.
  • Identify interface habits or workflows that depend on Windows 10 features. Windows 11’s Start layout is not resizable, Live Tiles are absent, Tablet Mode was removed, and taskbar alignment is limited to the bottom.
  • If you use Windows Mail, Calendar, or People, note that Microsoft ended support for those apps on December 31, 2024; Microsoft provides instructions for exporting local items.

After the change

  • Confirm Windows activation and install available updates.
  • Check that drivers, restored files, accessibility settings, essential software, and peripherals work as expected.
  • Make sure your backup is current and that you can retrieve files from it.

Windows 10 vs Windows 11: how to decide

  • Your PC passes compatibility checks: Back up first, then check Windows Update for the free, edition-matched upgrade.
  • Your PC fails the checks but can serve briefly: Consider consumer ESU as a limited security-update bridge, after confirming local availability and current terms.
  • Your PC is ineligible and needs ongoing support or dependable access to required software: Compare replacement PCs and verify the exact model’s Windows 11 requirements.

Home and Pro for personal use require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial Windows 11 setup. Internet access is also needed for updates and some features. Check those setup requirements before upgrading or choosing a replacement.
