If Windows 10 or 11 will not start after an update, open the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. If the trouble began after a recent update, use Uninstall Updates next. Keep your BitLocker recovery key handy; save Reset or reinstall options for later because they can affect your files.
First, identify where startup stops
Before changing recovery settings, note what appears on screen: no power, the manufacturer logo, Windows loading, an error or blue screen, a recovery menu, or a BitLocker prompt. Write down any stop code or update identifier. Those details can help narrow the issue, but they do not by themselves prove that the update caused it.

The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though available menu options can differ by version and device.
How to open Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is Windows’ built-in set of tools for diagnosing and repairing common startup problems. After multiple failed starts, Windows may open it automatically. If it does not, follow Microsoft’s guidance for accessing Windows Recovery Environment or use recovery media to reach the available tools.

If the device is encrypted with BitLocker, some recovery actions—including Startup Repair—may require the recovery key. If prompted, retrieve the key before proceeding; Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance explains this requirement.
Try Startup Repair first
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select your account if prompted, enter the required credentials or BitLocker recovery key, then select Restart if asked.
- Let Windows scan and attempt repairs. If it cannot fix the problem, review the report of issues found and move to the next step.
Startup Repair attempts to address common boot problems, including damaged system files, boot configuration data, the master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It is not guaranteed to fix every cause. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.

Uninstall the recent update if the timing fits
If startup trouble began after a recent Windows update, removing that update may help. Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled, and removing a security update can carry risk.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the available option for the latest quality or feature update that matches the update you suspect.
- Follow the prompts and restart the PC.
Microsoft says uninstalling an update does not affect personal files or apps, but that does not mean every update can be removed. On a work or school device, contact your IT team before removing an update. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling a Windows update and its overview of Windows recovery options.

Use Safe Mode as a diagnostic step
If WinRE offers Startup Settings, Safe Mode can help determine whether the issue is tied to something loaded during normal startup. It starts Windows with a limited set of services and drivers; if the failure does not recur there, default settings, basic device drivers, and services are less likely to be responsible. That clue does not establish that the update was the cause.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
For the available Startup Settings options, see Microsoft’s Windows Startup Settings guidance.

Choose the next recovery option carefully
If Startup Repair and update removal do not help, WinRE may offer System Restore, Reset this PC, or other options. What is available varies by device and Windows version. Review the screen for the effects of the specific action before proceeding, and back up files if possible.
| Option | When it may fit | Data effect or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Startup Repair | Windows will not start or keeps loading. | Attempts automatic repairs; a BitLocker recovery key may be required. |
| Uninstall Updates | The failure began after a recent update. | Files and apps are kept, but some updates cannot be removed; consider the security implications of removing an update. |
| Safe Mode | Startup Settings is available and you want to check whether a reduced Windows session changes the symptom. | Loads limited services and drivers. A symptom-free session narrows the possibilities but does not prove the cause. |
| System Restore or Reset this PC | Earlier recovery attempts failed and the option is available. | Effects vary. Reset lets you choose to keep personal files or remove everything; check the selected option and back up first. |
| Reinstall using installation media | Other recovery routes failed. | Reinstalling from installation media removes everything. Microsoft recommends OEM recovery media where appropriate for hardware compatibility. |
Microsoft’s recovery options guide explains the differences. Do not choose a destructive option unless you understand its consequences. If the PC still will not start, Microsoft describes creating installation media on another working PC; a blank USB drive by itself is not bootable recovery media.
