No. Nintendo lists the Ocarina of Time remake as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, not an original Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo’s US store page gives the scheduled release date as November 5, 2026, so the remake is not yet available as of October 13, 2026. Nintendo’s product listing identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the system.
Why the remake won’t run on the original Switch
Nintendo announced the remake as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, and describes it as built from the ground up for that system. The platform listing—not the fact that the original game appeared on Nintendo 64—is what determines compatibility for this new release.

Nintendo’s backward-compatibility information says compatible original Switch software can run on Switch 2, with some games potentially unsupported or not fully compatible. That describes older Switch games running on the newer system; it does not make Switch 2 exclusives playable on the original Switch. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility guidance addresses that distinction.
What Nintendo has announced about the remake
Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 announcement sets the launch for November 5, 2026. It also describes a substantial update to the presentation and controls:
#1 Best Overall
- Become the Hero of Time and save Hyrule from darkness
- Venture into dungeons, solve puzzles, and travel across time in two different eras to restore balance to the land
- A classic tale, reborn for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, featuring voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, visuals built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2, and more
- Play Link’s in-game ocarina by humming or singing into the Nintendo Switch 2 system microphone
- Overhauled visuals
- Fully voiced cutscenes and expanded character dialogue
- Symphonic orchestral music
- Reworked camera and movement controls
The US product listing describes a digital edition and estimates the game file at 27 GB. It lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes, and says the game is for one player on one system. Nintendo’s listed product details may change before launch; the reviewed listing does not establish a physical cartridge edition.
What to do if you want to play it
Keep your original Switch
If you only own an original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has not listed this remake for your system. The game’s announced platform does not support expecting it to work through an update, a download of the Nintendo 64 original, or Switch-to-Switch backward compatibility.

Nintendo Switch 2 is the listed system for this release. Whether upgrading makes sense depends on how much you want to play this remake and value its announced visual, audio, and control changes. Are the anniversary console or amiibo required?
No special-edition console or amiibo is stated as a requirement. Nintendo announced a Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Switch 2 console and accessories scheduled for October 29, 2026; these are separate hardware options, not the only way to play the game. Nintendo also says Zelda-series amiibo can provide in-game extras. Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo figures are planned for 2027, with special masks, but amiibo are optional.
