Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 will play PS5 or older PlayStation games. Neither platform has published a complete compatibility list for its next-generation console. That means Xbox’s statement is encouraging, but it does not guarantee every game, disc, save, accessory, or online service will work.
What is confirmed about Xbox Project Helix?
In a March 11, 2026 summary of Xbox VP Jason Ronald’s GDC keynote, Xbox said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” Ronald also said, “we’re committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come.” Xbox Wire’s announcement is a broad platform statement, not a game-by-game compatibility list.

The announcement does not spell out which titles or generations will work on Helix, whether support will be universal, or what media formats the hardware will accept. In particular, “play your Xbox console games” does not confirm that Helix will have a disc drive or read older Xbox discs.

Will PS6 play PS5 games?
Sony has not confirmed a PS6 backward compatibility policy in the official materials cited here. So the accurate answer is unknown—not that PS6 will or will not play PS5 games.
Sony’s earlier compatibility statements apply to PS5, not PS6. In October 2020, Sony said more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were expected to be playable on PS5 at launch. Why “four generations” does not mean every Xbox game will work
Xbox’s current backward compatibility information shows why a broad preservation commitment should not be read as a promise that every older game will run. Microsoft says most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S, while Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is limited to selected titles. Features can also vary by game, and Series S is digital-only. Check the current Xbox backward compatibility page for its live catalog and format caveats.
That present-day Series X|S policy is useful context, but it is not a Helix compatibility list. The March 2026 announcement does not quantify how many games Helix will support or identify every title that will be included.

Does Sony’s 2028 disc announcement affect PS6 compatibility?
Not based on the announcement itself. On July 1, 2026, Sony said physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles would be discontinued starting January 2028. Sony also said the change would not affect games already released or releasing before that date in disc format. The statement concerns production of new-game discs; it does not say whether PS6 will read existing PlayStation discs or support digital PS4 or PS5 games. Read Sony’s disc-production announcement.
