To check, sign in on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical disc drive, insert the game disc, and launch the game. If that specific title is eligible, the console may offer a digital license. The disc must remain in your possession for the license to stay valid; this is not a way to keep playing after selling or giving the disc away.
Which Xbox discs can qualify?
Microsoft’s feature applies to select Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. Xbox 360 and Original Xbox discs are excluded. Eligibility is title-specific and may vary by market; Microsoft says it can change because of technical, licensing, and publishing factors. A game’s generation, backward compatibility, or support for Smart Delivery does not by itself establish that its disc qualifies. Xbox’s product FAQ describes the current disc-check process and exclusions, while Microsoft’s usage rules explain that eligibility can change.

In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said the rollout was starting with thousands of titles and that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games supported the feature. That was an announcement-era description, not a guarantee that a particular disc is eligible now. Xbox said Insiders could begin testing the feature on August 31, 2026. Read the Xbox announcement.

How to check your disc
- Use a disc-reading Xbox. You need an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console with an optical disc drive. A digital-only console cannot perform the insertion check.
- Sign in to the account that should receive the license.
- Insert the Xbox One or Series X disc and launch the game.
- Check for the console’s offer. If the title qualifies, follow the on-screen prompt to claim or receive its digital license. The entitlement may also appear in your game library.
- Keep the disc. The license is linked to continued possession of the qualifying disc and cannot be transferred separately.
Xbox’s announcement describes claiming an entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game; its current product FAQ says to look for a digital-license prompt. Microsoft’s rules allow for a license to be claimed or received, so the exact screen or wording may vary. Do not rely on a particular menu label.

What if no digital-license offer appears?
No offer means the console has not established that this disc qualifies. Eligibility varies and can change, so check the current Xbox product FAQ and Microsoft usage rules. You can also check that the console is up to date and try launching the disc again. Smart Delivery, backward compatibility, or owning another edition of the game does not substitute for a title-specific offer.
If the disc is not eligible, the alternative is to obtain a separate digital license through the Xbox Store. Whether that makes sense depends on the title, its current store availability and price, and whether you want to keep the disc-linked arrangement.

What the digital license does—and does not—let you do
You must keep the qualifying disc
Microsoft describes the license as limited and conditioned on continued possession of the disc. It may be revalidated, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have the disc. Selling or giving it away can therefore end access to the associated license. The digital entitlement is not a separately transferable copy.
It is different from Smart Delivery
Smart Delivery is a publisher-configured way to provide the appropriate generation’s game package. Microsoft’s developer documentation says a Smart Delivery disc release may require an online license to obtain a higher-generation package or may include full disc support. Neither case, by itself, proves that the disc qualifies for a disc-linked digital license. Microsoft’s Smart Delivery overview explains the package-delivery feature.

It is different from ordinary backward-compatible disc play
A disc may play on a newer Xbox through backward compatibility while still requiring the disc for ordinary authentication. Disc-to-digital licensing is a separate feature with its own title eligibility and claim process.
Other-device benefits depend on the game
Xbox says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits apply where supported. Play Anywhere is limited to participating titles and compatible devices; Microsoft’s rules also say a game can be played on only one device at a time. The digital license does not make every title available on every device or service.
