Yes. A PCIe 5.0 adapter can work in a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, but it will negotiate down to PCIe 4.0 speeds. To connect eight NVMe Gen4 SSDs to one x16 slot, choose a card with a PCIe switch, such as the HighPoint Rocket 1508; a passive multi-M.2 card instead needs motherboard and CPU support for PCIe bifurcation.
Will a PCIe 5.0 adapter work in a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot?
Yes, provided the card and system are otherwise compatible. PCIe generations are backward compatible: a Gen5 card in a Gen4 slot negotiates the fastest generation supported by both ends, so the connection runs at Gen4, not Gen5. The adapter cannot make the host slot faster.

Check that the slot is electrically x16, not merely a long, physically x16 connector wired for fewer lanes. A Gen5 card in a Gen4 x16 slot can use the slot’s Gen4 x16 link, while a slot wired for fewer lanes limits the available host bandwidth accordingly.

Yes, with an adapter built to fan out the host connection to multiple NVMe devices. For eight drives, a PCIe-switch card is the straightforward option: the switch exposes separate downstream links for the SSDs while sharing the card’s single upstream x16 connection to the system. It does not give each drive a dedicated x16 connection to the CPU.

That shared upstream link is the system-side bandwidth ceiling. Eight drives can be installed and detected without each being able to transfer at its own maximum speed simultaneously. Actual aggregate throughput depends on the host link, the drives, workload, and other system limits. HighPoint lists a maximum transfer speed of 28GB/s for the Rocket 1508; that is the card maker’s published figure, not a promise that every eight-drive workload will reach it.
Switch card or passive adapter: which do you need?
PCIe-switch card
A switch card contains PCIe switching hardware that presents multiple downstream device connections to the host. The host slot does not need to be divided into separate x4 links by BIOS bifurcation. This makes switch cards the more dependable choice when the motherboard does not offer the required bifurcation setting, or when you want eight drives on one x16 slot.

- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write

- 5-year limited warranty
Switch cards still depend on the system’s available CPU and chipset lanes, suitable slot wiring, power, cooling, and firmware support. A switch avoids the bifurcation requirement; it does not remove those other constraints.
Passive multi-M.2 card
A passive card has no PCIe switch to divide and route the lanes. A typical four-drive x16 passive card requires the motherboard and CPU to split the slot into four x4 links, often described as x4/x4/x4/x4 bifurcation. Confirm the exact slot and BIOS support before buying: a physically x16 slot alone does not establish that the platform can provide this lane split.

Do not assume a passive four-drive card can provide eight-drive operation. Its drive count and lane requirements are determined by its design; for eight devices, select a card explicitly built for that number, typically with a switch.
Eight-drive adapter options compared
| Adapter | Host interface | Drive connections | Bifurcation | Fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HighPoint Rocket 1508 | PCIe 4.0 x16 | 8 M.2 NVMe sockets | Not required; switch card | Direct Gen4 match for eight M.2 drives. HighPoint says its eight independent device ports support off-the-shelf 2242, 2460, and 2280 M.2 SSDs of any capacity, and publishes up to 28GB/s transfer speed. |
| HighPoint Rocket 1608A | PCIe 5.0 x16 | 8 M.2 NVMe sockets | Not required; switch architecture | Gen5 host and future expansion. HighPoint’s 2024 datasheet states 64GB/s bandwidth and real-world sustained transfer speeds up to 56,000MB/s; those figures describe the card’s Gen5 specification, not what it can deliver in a Gen4 x16 slot. |
| ICY DOCK MB308A | PCIe 4.0 x16 | Up to 4 NVMe drives via SlimSAS | Requires x4/x4/x4/x4 | For cable-connected drive setups where the system supports bifurcation. ICY DOCK specifies PCIe 4.0 x16 up to 256Gbps total bandwidth. |
| PCIe.com S22S0416 | PCIe 5.0 x16 | Eight x4 MCIO channels | Integrated PEX89048 switch | For MCIO-based NVMe expansion; check that the card’s connector and cable ecosystem matches the intended drives or enclosure. |
For eight Gen4 M.2 SSDs on a Gen4 host, the Rocket 1508 is the direct generation match. A Gen5 switch card such as the Rocket 1608A is an option if the system is expected to move to Gen5 later, but in a Gen4 slot it still operates at Gen4 host-link speed. The MB308A is a different, four-drive SlimSAS solution rather than an eight-M.2 substitute.

What to verify before installing eight drives
- Slot wiring: Confirm the chosen slot is electrically x16 and check whether it connects to the CPU or chipset. A physically x16 slot may expose fewer lanes.
- Lane topology: Check the motherboard manual and CPU specifications for available lanes and slot-sharing rules. For a passive adapter, verify x4/x4/x4/x4 bifurcation support in the specific slot and BIOS.
- Card fit and power: Check the card’s length, power connectors, heatsink clearance, and neighboring-slot space against the case and motherboard.
- Cooling: Eight SSDs and a switch card concentrate heat. Ensure the card’s heatsink has room and that case airflow reaches the drives and controller.
- Drive and cable compatibility: Match the card’s specified connection type—M.2 sockets, SlimSAS, or MCIO—to the SSDs, cables, or enclosure. These connectors are not interchangeable without the correct qualified hardware.
- Firmware and operating system: Check the card maker’s support information for firmware, supported operating systems, and any setup requirements for the exact card revision.
Installation approach
- Read the motherboard manual to identify a PCIe slot that is electrically x16 and determine its CPU/chipset connection and any lane-sharing limits.
- For a switch card, confirm its power requirements, physical clearance, and cooling needs. For a passive card, first confirm the required x4/x4/x4/x4 bifurcation option exists for that slot.
- Install the adapter in the selected slot, attach any required auxiliary power, and fit the SSDs or specified cables according to the card’s documentation.
- Boot into BIOS or UEFI and enable bifurcation only if the adapter is passive and the platform requires it. A switch-based card does not require host-slot bifurcation.
- In the operating system, confirm that all installed drives are detected before creating volumes or configuring storage. If fewer drives appear, check the card’s connections, BIOS lane configuration for a passive card, power, and firmware guidance.
Bottom line
A Gen5 adapter is backward compatible with a Gen4 x16 slot, but it runs at Gen4 link speed. For eight Gen4 M.2 SSDs on one x16 slot, use an eight-port switch card such as the Rocket 1508 unless you have a specific reason to choose a Gen5 model for a future Gen5 host. A passive multi-drive card is appropriate only when the platform supports its required lane bifurcation.
