You can’t choose a different color for the actual Windows Blue Screen of Death using a Microsoft-documented setting. Its appearance can depend on your Windows version: Microsoft documents a black stop-error screen in Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, and a blue one in version 23H2 and older. Windows theme and accent-color settings change the desktop, not the crash screen.
Why the BSOD may be blue or black
A stop-error screen appears when Windows encounters a serious problem. The screen’s color and message can vary by Windows version, rather than being a user-selectable appearance setting. Microsoft’s guidance shows this distinction for Windows 11:

| Windows 11, version 23H2 and older | Blue |
Microsoft also discusses blue screens in its Windows 10 stop-code troubleshooting guidance. These descriptions explain version behavior; they do not provide a control for choosing the screen color. See Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop-code errors.

Why changing Windows theme colors won’t change a crash screen
Windows personalization includes light and dark modes, accent colors, and other desktop appearance options. Those settings are for the Windows interface; Microsoft does not document them as controls for the stop-error screen. Changing your wallpaper, theme, or accent color therefore isn’t a supported way to recolor a BSOD. See Microsoft’s Windows personalization guidance.

Don’t rely on an undocumented registry tweak
Microsoft documents registry values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCrashControl for system-failure and recovery behavior, but its instructions do not identify a supported value for setting the stop-screen color. The same guidance warns, “Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly.” Avoid applying a registry recipe for recoloring the screen unless it is backed by authoritative documentation. Read Microsoft’s instructions for system failure and recovery options.
The Windows IoT option hides the screen; it doesn’t recolor it
Windows IoT Enterprise documents a DisplayDisabled setting that suppresses the blue screen on managed IoT devices. Suppressing the screen hides it and automatically reboots the device; it does not select another color. This is a deployment option for IoT devices, not a general customization setting for consumer Windows PCs. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows IoT Enterprise blue-screen documentation.

If you’re seeing stop errors, troubleshoot the cause
If the reason you want to change the screen is that Windows keeps crashing, focus on the stop code and the unexpected restarts rather than the screen’s color. Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting guidance is the appropriate starting point for diagnosing those errors.
