Discovery’s HBO Max streaming portfolios into one platform. The apps have not yet been combined. As of October 4, 2026, the companies expected their merger to close on October 6, subject to customary closing conditions; a consumer launch date for the combined service has not been announced.
What Paramount has announced
On its March 2, 2026 investor call, Paramount chair and CEO David Ellison said: “To enhance competition and deliver viewers a truly compelling offering, we will combine the streaming portfolios of the 2 companies into one stronger platform over the coming years.” That is the company’s stated direction, not a launch-date commitment.

Paramount described a future platform drawing on the companies’ complementary series and franchises, premium sports, and news brands. Its merger announcement named properties including Harry Potter, Mission: Impossible, The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, DC, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Star Trek, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Those examples refer to the broader companies’ libraries and franchises; they do not guarantee that every title will be available in the app at launch or in every territory. Licensing, streaming rights, and theatrical windows can affect availability. Paramount’s investor-call transcript and merger announcement describe the plan and portfolio.

The merger had not yet reached its announced expected closing date. On September 30, a consent decree resolved a lawsuit brought by 12 states, and a court modified the no-close order to permit the transaction to proceed. Paramount and WBD then announced an expected closing date of October 6, subject to customary closing conditions. See the companies’ closing announcement and the SEC Form 8-K.

Separately, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said on June 12, 2026, that it had completed its investigation and concluded the transaction was not likely to harm competition or American consumers, including in subscription video on demand. That was the department’s assessment of the proposed merger—not a guarantee about future prices, catalog size, or consumer outcomes. The DOJ statement addresses its review, not the consumer rollout of the app.
What is still unknown about the combined service
Paramount’s “over the coming years” language is the only implementation timing established in the cited announcements. The sources do not specify a consumer launch date or final service name. They also do not say what the service will cost, which subscription tiers it will offer, whether existing subscribers will need to migrate accounts or select a new plan, or how long the current apps will remain available during a transition.

On its March 2, 2026 investor call, Paramount Skydance Corporation reported more than 200 million direct-to-consumer subscribers across the two platforms in more than 100 countries and territories. This is a company-reported aggregate scale figure, not a count of unique people and not a promise that the future app will have that many subscribers. Subscriber definitions and totals can change.
