Meta’s documentation describes Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers as Quest-device input, but does not establish that SteamVR can track them without a Quest headset. Unofficial experiments may exist; the official documentation reviewed does not confirm them.
Can you use PSVR 2 or Quest 3 controllers with SteamVR without their headsets?
The answer for both is not in a setup documented by their manufacturers. Sony publishes a PC configuration for PS VR2 Sense controllers, but that configuration includes the PS VR2 headset. Meta identifies Touch Plus controllers with Quest devices and does not document using them directly with SteamVR when the headset is absent.

This is a statement about supported, documented use—not proof that no third-party driver or community experiment can ever work. The key distinction is that connecting a controller is not the same as establishing the tracking SteamVR needs.
PS VR2 Sense controllers: Sony’s PC setup includes the headset
Sony’s PS VR2 on PC setup instructions and PC adapter instruction manual describe a complete arrangement: install SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 app, pair each Sense controller in the PC’s Bluetooth settings, and connect the PS VR2 headset through the PC adapter.

Bluetooth pairing is therefore one part of Sony’s workflow, not evidence that the controllers can track themselves in headset-free SteamVR. Sony’s PS VR2 support page also covers the PC setup and controller-tracking troubleshooting. It cautions against connecting the PC adapter through a USB hub or extension cable because that may cause malfunction.
Sony’s headset-free controller statement is about PS5
Sony’s PS VR2 FAQ asks whether the Sense controller can be used without the headset and answers: “Yes, the PS VR2 Sense controller will work with the PS5 console without the use of a PS VR2 headset.” The stated platform is PS5. It does not describe standalone controller tracking in SteamVR on a PC.

The PC adapter does not remove the headset requirement
Sony announced PC access for PS VR2 players through the adapter in its June 3, 2024 announcement. That is a way to use PS VR2 with PC games while keeping the headset in the setup, not a way to turn the Sense controllers into a headset-free SteamVR tracking system. Sony also notes that some PS VR2 features available on PS5 are not available on PC.

Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers: Meta documents Quest use, not headset-free SteamVR
Meta’s device comparison identifies Touch controllers as primary input for Quest devices and lists Quest Touch Plus controllers as supported and available separately. Its controller overview says Touch Plus shipped with Quest 3 and Quest 3S.

Those pages establish the controllers’ place in Meta’s Quest device and runtime context. They do not describe a mode for tracking Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers directly in SteamVR without a Quest headset. A Bluetooth connection alone should not be treated as proof that SteamVR can locate or track the controllers.

What to use if you want SteamVR controller tracking
- Have PS VR2 Sense controllers? For Sony’s documented SteamVR-on-PC configuration, use the PS VR2 headset, the PS VR2 PC adapter, the PlayStation VR2 app, SteamVR, and Bluetooth-paired controllers.
- Have Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers? Meta’s reviewed documentation supports them as Quest-device controllers; it does not establish headset-free SteamVR tracking.
- Considering the PS VR2 PC adapter? It is relevant if you are willing to use the PS VR2 headset on PC. The adapter does not meet the requirement of using the controllers without that headset.
