Usually, yes: a factory reset returns the phone’s software to its factory state, so a preinstalled app you turned off can become available again. But the outcome isn’t guaranteed on every Android model. Google’s general reset instructions don’t promise it, and they point you to the phone maker for device-specific steps. Apps you downloaded yourself are a different case. A reset uninstalls them, and you reinstall them afterward.
First, which kind of app do you mean?
The answer depends on the app’s state. Work out which of these three applies before you decide whether a reset is worth it.

Why the answer isn’t a flat “yes”
Google’s reset help says a factory reset erases phone data. It says Google Account data can be restored while apps and their data are uninstalled. It also tells users to check the manufacturer’s support site for device-specific instructions. Google Play Help separately describes turning an app that came with the device back on, and it offers Enable for apps that are turned off and Install for apps that need installing again.

Restoring app data and reinstalling apps are separate steps, though, and the exact result depends on your phone. The official sources don’t establish a universal guarantee for every model and reset method, and none publishes a figure for how often apps return.

Before you reset
- Back up what matters. A reset erases the data on the phone.
- Confirm your credentials. You need the Google Account and screen-lock details to set the phone up again. Samsung describes Factory Reset Protection, which can require account verification after a reset on devices with a Google account. It is a theft safeguard and has nothing to do with restoring apps.
- Read your manufacturer’s instructions. Reset steps and behavior vary by brand and model.
- Consider a lighter fix. If you only want a disabled app back, you can usually turn it on without wiping anything (see below).
Bring the app back without a reset
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then Manage apps & device, then Manage.
- Select the app and tap Enable or Install, depending on its state.
Menu labels can differ by Android version and manufacturer. If the app doesn’t appear, use your phone maker’s model-specific support.
If an app is missing after the reset
- Finish setup and sign in with your Google Account.
- Follow the Play Store path above and look for the app.
- Tap Install for downloaded apps, or Enable for a preinstalled app that is still off.
- If it still isn’t there, check the manufacturer’s support for your model. Some apps are exclusive to a brand’s own app store or tied to the device.
Resetting to fix a problem app
Google’s troubleshooting guidance warns that if a downloaded app caused the problem and you install it again, the problem could return. If that was your reason for resetting, reinstall apps selectively rather than restoring everything at once.
