Wi-Fi 7 vs. Wi-Fi 8: What Changes for Home Networks?

Wi-Fi 7 is available today as a published standard, while Wi-Fi 8 remains an IEEE project focused on reliability. Here is what that means for home networks and upgrade decisions.

Wi-Fi 7 is available as a published standard; Wi-Fi 8 is still being developed. For home networks, Wi-Fi 7 can already offer Multi-Link Operation (MLO) when both the router and connected device support it. Wi-Fi 8 is associated with a project focused on reliability, but its final features and consumer-product timing are not settled. That makes Wi-Fi 7 a real option to assess against a current network problem, while Wi-Fi 8 is not yet a reason to expect a specific upgrade or performance gain.

What is the status of Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 8?

Comparison Wi-Fi 7 Wi-Fi 8
IEEE designation IEEE 802.11be-2024, a published standard titled “Enhancements for Extremely High Throughput (EHT).” IEEE Standards Association IEEE P802.11bn, an in-process project named “Ultra High Reliability.” It is not a completed standard. IEEE 802.11 Working Group project listing
What the label signals A published standard whose technical capabilities include high throughput and features such as MLO; what a home gets depends on compatible equipment and configuration. A project with reliability as its stated emphasis. A finalized consumer feature list or guaranteed improvement is not established while the work remains in progress.
Timing Published. IEEE’s timeline listed draft D2.00 and a predicted final-document milestone of May 2028 when checked in 2026. This is a forecast for the standard, not a router launch or certification date. IEEE 802.11 Working Group timeline

What can Wi-Fi 7 mean for a home?

Its headline throughput figure is not a household speed test

IEEE describes Wi-Fi 7 operation between 1 and 7.250 GHz and states that the standard supports at least one mode capable of at least 30 Gbit/s maximum throughput at the MAC data service access point. That is a standards-level technical maximum, not a typical Wi-Fi speed, a promised router rate, or the speed of an internet connection. Actual use depends on equipment, connected clients, radio conditions, and local spectrum rules. IEEE also specifies backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy Wi-Fi devices in the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. IEEE 802.11be-2024

MLO can use more than one link

Multi-Link Operation is relevant only when the access point and client both support the applicable capability. A 2026 Wireless Broadband Alliance Phase 2 field trial used a commercially available tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access point and an Intel BE200 client using eMLSR in a 4,500-square-foot single-family home. The setup included wall attenuation, active interference, and traffic from multiple devices. Under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference, the trial reported up to twice the aggregated throughput compared with legacy single-link operation, a 35–48% reduction in application-layer latency, and up to a 40% reduction in MAC-layer jitter. These are results from that trial’s specific equipment and conditions, not expected gains for every home or broadband service. Wireless Broadband Alliance Phase 2 Wi-Fi 7 field trial, announced February 26, 2026

What is known—and not yet known—about Wi-Fi 8?

IEEE P802.11bn is an active standards project focused on Ultra High Reliability. That goal makes consistency and reliability the useful high-level contrast with Wi-Fi 7’s extremely-high-throughput framing, but it does not establish a particular improvement for home users. Because the project is still in draft, proposed technical mechanisms and feature lists should not be treated as final requirements. The May 2028 date on IEEE’s timeline is a predicted final-document milestone; standards completion, certification, and retail availability are separate events and may occur on different schedules. There is no established independent Wi-Fi 7-versus-Wi-Fi 8 home-router benchmark in the cited material. Typical Wi-Fi 8 home throughput, finalized capabilities, certification requirements, product timing, and price comparisons therefore remain unresolved.

Should you upgrade your home network now?

Start with the problem you are trying to fix, not the generation number. A Wi-Fi 7 router may be worth comparing if your existing network has a real coverage, interference, latency-under-load, or capacity problem. If the network already works well, the in-progress status of Wi-Fi 8 does not provide an evidence-based reason to wait for a particular retail date.

  • Check the source of the problem: Distinguish weak coverage from a slow broadband plan, a poorly placed router, or congestion from nearby networks.
  • Check client support: A new router’s capabilities benefit a device only when that device supports them too; MLO requires support at both ends.
  • Check layout and backhaul: Consider whether moving an access point, using wired backhaul, or choosing a mesh system better addresses the home’s floor plan than replacing a single router.
  • Check local spectrum permissions: The standard describes operation across bands, but the cited evidence does not establish what 6 GHz use is permitted in each country.
  • Compare the full replacement cost: Include any clients you would need to replace to use the feature you want, and compare that cost with the benefit you need.

These checks help match available Wi-Fi 7 equipment to a particular home; they are not a product test or a promise of universal improvement.
