Google says Gems will automatically transition to Gemini skills, but the change is more than a rename: skills are reusable instruction sets that Gemini can apply automatically, that you can invoke directly, and that you can combine. Google’s announced migration dates are November 2026 for personal Google accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts, and June 2027 for Workspace education accounts. Manual migration is available as a copy-and-upload workflow; check feature and file compatibility before relying on a skill for a task your Gem handles today.
What changes when a Gem becomes a skill?
A Gem is a customized Gemini experience built around its name, description, instructions, and any knowledge files. Google’s skill format keeps the core custom instructions but makes them reusable in a different way: Gemini may recognize and apply a relevant skill automatically, you can invoke one directly, and you can combine multiple skills in a task. That flexibility does not mean every Gem tool, integration, or behavior carries over unchanged.

Google says it will automatically transition Gems and supported files when Gems go away. The automatic transfer is limited to supported files; Google does not promise that every file type or connected capability will migrate.

Google’s announced dates vary by account category. They are future dates as of October 4, 2026; Google says the transition will happen automatically when Gems go away.

| Account category | Announced transition |
|---|---|
| Personal Google accounts | November 2026 |
| Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts | March 2027 |
| Workspace education accounts | June 2027 |
These dates describe the planned transition, not current skill availability. Google says skills are being made available gradually, beginning with personal Google Accounts; a later Workspace migration date does not establish that every Workspace user can create or use skills now. How to move a Gem manually
If you want to recreate a Gem as a skill before its scheduled transition, Google’s documented workflow is to copy its identity and instructions, then package any knowledge files with the skill. The manual file workflow requires downloading Gem knowledge files individually; it does not download them all in one bulk operation.
- Copy the Gem’s details. Open the Gem and copy its name, description, and instructions. Keep any important examples or requirements separately as an extra safeguard; Google’s manual workflow explicitly names those three fields.
- Download knowledge files, if present. Download each file from the Gem individually. They can be uploaded together to the skill later.
- Create the skill. In Gemini, create a skill and enter the copied name, description, and instructions.
- Prepare its folder. Make a folder named for the skill, using lowercase words separated by hyphens. Download the skill’s ZIP, extract
SKILL.md, and place that file in the folder with the downloaded knowledge files. - Replace the skill with the folder. Use the skill’s Replace skill option to upload the folder. Google says the folder name must match the skill name.
- Check the result against your actual tasks. Review the skill and try the tasks that matter to you, especially any that depended on a Gem feature or file type whose support is uncertain.
See Google’s manual Gem-to-skill instructions for the current interface and packaging steps.

Which Gem features are not supported in skills?
Google’s transition help lists these default Gem tools or features as not yet working with skills:
- Create video
- Create music
- Canvas
- Deep Research
- Guided learning
Google also says skills do not yet work with Canvas or Deep Research. If either is central to your workflow, do not assume a skill is a drop-in replacement for that Gem. Compatibility may change, so consult the current transition compatibility list before switching a workflow you depend on.
What happens to knowledge files and imported skills?
For a manual move, download each Gem knowledge file separately and include it in the skill folder. Google’s automatic migration promise covers supported files only, so it should not be read as a guarantee that every attachment will transfer.

Google also allows users to import skills created elsewhere as SKILL.md files. That establishes file import, not equivalent execution of every instruction, tool, or integration across platforms. Google says internet-dependent scripts are unsupported, references must be uploaded with the skill, and GitHub files are not supported in skills for now. See Google’s skills help for current file guidance.
