Choose Wi-Fi 7 if your devices can use its newer features and you want them; choose Wi-Fi 6E if your main goal is access to 6 GHz and you do not need Wi-Fi 7-specific capabilities. A router’s generation alone does not guarantee faster speeds or better coverage. The right choice depends on the exact router, the devices connecting to it, your home layout, and the Wi-Fi features permitted in your region.
What separates Wi-Fi 6E from Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 into the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 7 also supports 6 GHz, where available, and adds capabilities including Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channel width. Those are standard-level capabilities, not a promise that every router or client implements or exposes them. The Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification records describe specific certified products; check the individual model’s specifications before buying.

| What to compare | Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi 7 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 GHz | Adds 6 GHz support to Wi-Fi 6. | Also supports 6 GHz, subject to product and regional support. | Both router and client support the band, and local rules permit the router’s intended operation. |
| Channel width | The cited Wi-Fi 6E certification record lists up to 160 MHz. | Wi-Fi 7 certification records include 320 MHz capability. | Whether the exact router and client support the channel width; the standard alone does not establish it for every product. |
| MLO | Not a Wi-Fi 6E feature. | Includes MLO capabilities. | Support on both ends, plus the router’s implementation and firmware. |
| Older devices | Compatible clients can use supported 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. | Older clients can connect on supported bands but do not gain Wi-Fi 7 client features. | The device model’s specifications, operating system, and supported bands. |
| Best reason to consider it | Access to 6 GHz without needing a Wi-Fi 7 feature. | Compatible devices and a workload that can use Wi-Fi 7 features. | Your current and likely future devices, the router’s actual features, home layout, and price. |
Will your devices benefit from a new router?
A new router does not upgrade the Wi-Fi hardware in a phone, computer, or other client. To use 6 GHz, the client must support 6 GHz; to use Wi-Fi 7 features such as MLO or 320 MHz channels, the client must support the corresponding feature too. TP-Link says devices made before 2020 are unlikely to support 6 GHz, but that is a rough manufacturer guideline, not a compatibility guarantee. Check the device maker’s specifications for a definitive answer. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 7 router and Deco FAQs also explain that Wi-Fi 7 features require compatible clients.

Apple devices and network names
Apple’s guidance for using Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 networks notes that when a router gives its three bands different network names, an Apple device may identify the network as having limited compatibility. Joining may place it on 5 GHz, without some Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 benefits. If you use Apple devices, check the router’s SSID or band-steering setup against Apple’s current device guidance and confirm which band the device actually joins.
What does 6 GHz mean for range and performance?
Microsoft’s home-layout guidance says a 6 GHz network can provide the best performance close to the router, and notes that many older devices do not support 6 GHz. That makes the band most relevant when a compatible device is in a suitable location. It does not establish that 6 GHz will reach farther or deliver faster service at every distance in every home.

Results depend on the particular router and client, placement, building layout, interference, and local regulatory domain. Do not treat a Wi-Fi generation or band name as a guaranteed speed or whole-home coverage figure.
How to choose between Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7
Choose Wi-Fi 7 when compatible devices can use its features
Wi-Fi 7 is the stronger fit if you are buying new, have or expect compatible clients, and have a reason to use features such as MLO or wider channels. Before choosing a router, confirm that both ends support the specific feature you care about and that the router enables it in your region. A Wi-Fi 7 label alone does not prove that a model offers every feature in the same way.

Choose Wi-Fi 6E when 6 GHz is the goal
If you mainly want a 6 GHz-capable network and your devices do not need Wi-Fi 7-specific capabilities, Wi-Fi 6E may be enough. Compare the exact models and their current prices rather than assuming every Wi-Fi 7 router is better value.
Keep your current router if it meets your needs
There is no universal upgrade benefit established for every household. If your existing network works for your devices and workload, the standard printed on a newer router’s box is not, by itself, a reason to replace it.

What to check on a router before buying
- Supported bands: Check whether the specific model includes 6 GHz as well as the bands your existing devices use.
- Channel widths: Verify the router’s listed widths and whether your clients support them; do not assume every Wi-Fi 7 model supports 320 MHz.
- MLO: Confirm the router’s MLO implementation, firmware requirements, and compatibility with your client devices.
- Regional availability: Check which bands and features the model enables where you live.
- Wired connections: Compare Ethernet ports and other wired specifications if those matter to your setup; Wi-Fi generation does not determine them.
- Device compatibility: Look up the exact phones, computers, and other clients rather than relying on their age or the router’s generation.
