The difference is not just a coating: waterproof protection depends on a water-blocking layer and how the garment’s seams and openings are constructed. Durable water repellent (DWR) helps water bead on the outer fabric, but DWR alone does not make a jacket waterproof.
Water-resistant, water-repellent and waterproof are not the same
Water-resistant
A water-resistant fabric slows water from getting through. That resistance may come from tightly woven material, a surface treatment, or both. It is limited protection: heavier rain or longer exposure can exceed it. There is no universal rain duration or intensity that separates all water-resistant jackets from waterproof ones.

Water-repellent and DWR
Durable water repellent, usually shortened to DWR, is a finish on the fabric’s surface. It encourages droplets to bead and run off rather than soak into the outer fabric. DWR can be used on waterproof jackets too, so the presence of a water-repellent finish is not proof that the garment has a waterproof barrier.
Waterproof
A waterproof design uses a membrane or another water-blocking layer to keep liquid water from passing through the fabric. The rest of the garment matters: water can enter through seams, zippers, pockets or other openings if those areas are not adequately protected. Helly Hansen and Columbia describe waterproof protection in terms of both the barrier and garment construction.

Which jacket suits the conditions?

These are practical categories, not laboratory thresholds. The sources do not establish a single hydrostatic-head rating that defines waterproofness for every jacket. If a manufacturer publishes a rating for a particular model, consider the stated test and the garment’s construction rather than treating the number as a universal guarantee.
How to inspect a waterproof jacket
- Check the seams. Look for whether they are fully sealed or only sealed in critical areas. A waterproof fabric alone does not establish that every seam is protected.
- Look at openings and closures. Zippers, pockets and other openings can be routes for water entry; check whether the design protects them.
- Consider breathability. A water-blocking barrier keeps rain out, while waterproof-breathable construction aims to let water vapor escape. The balance varies by garment and activity.
What DWR can—and cannot—do
DWR may wear down with use. Columbia says spray-on or wash-in treatments can reapply surface repellency; follow the jacket maker’s care instructions before treating a garment. Reproofing helps water bead on the face fabric, but it does not add a waterproof membrane or seal seams. It cannot turn a water-resistant jacket into a waterproof one.
