If your Galaxy phone wakes in your pocket, first confirm Settings > Display > Accidental touch protection is on. If the screen still wakes, turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to wake under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. Those gestures can wake the display even when accidental-touch protection is enabled. A brief wake does not necessarily mean the feature has failed.
What Accidental touch protection does—and what it does not do
Samsung describes Accidental touch protection as keeping the display inactive in dark places, such as a pocket or bag, to help prevent unintended calls, messages, and other screen interactions. It is generally found under Settings > Display. Samsung says the option is enabled by default on most Galaxy phones, but availability varies by model and software; some phones and tablets do not offer it. The feature is not a guarantee that the display will never light. Movement or contact can trigger a separate wake feature, such as Lift to wake or Double tap to wake. If the lock icon appears while you are using the phone in a dark place, swipe the icon left or right to dismiss protection. A secure screen lock helps prevent access if the display wakes, but it does not keep the screen dark. Samsung explains this distinction in its accidental-touch guidance, last updated June 13, 2026.

Fix pocket or bag wake-ups
- Turn on the protection setting. Open Settings > Display and enable Accidental touch protection. If you do not see it, search Settings for the feature name and check the manual for your exact Galaxy model; the option is not available on every device.
- Disable wake gestures if needed. Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures, then try turning off Lift to wake and Double tap to wake (the label may instead say Double tap to turn on screen). These are separate from accidental-touch protection. Samsung’s pocket-or-bag wake troubleshooting page covers these wake behaviors.
- Keep a secure screen lock. Use a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint lock to reduce the risk of unintended access if the display lights. This does not prevent the wake itself.
- Consider a compatible cover. Samsung recommends a flip or wallet-style case as an extra physical barrier. Confirm that the case fits your exact Galaxy model and fully covers the screen; it is prevention, not a fix for a missing or malfunctioning setting.
If the screen is not responding normally to touch
A pocket-wake issue is different from a touchscreen that misses taps, registers touches on its own, or responds inconsistently. Check the screen and accessories before changing touch settings. Samsung’s touchscreen troubleshooting guidance recommends checking environmental and accessory causes and restarting for minor problems.

- Remove a protector that is peeling, has trapped dust, or has air bubbles. Stacked films and third-party accessories can also affect touch response.
- Dry the screen and your hands; moisture or gloves can interfere with touch input.
- If you keep a suitable screen protector, look in Display settings for Touch sensitivity. It is not available on every model, and enabling it without a protector may make the screen overly responsive.
- Restart the phone if touch problems persist after checking the screen and accessories. If the display is damaged or remains unresponsive, contact Samsung support or a service center rather than treating it as a pocket-protection setting issue.
Galaxy Z Flip: check fingerprint activation separately
If a Galaxy Z Flip registers accidental fingerprint touches, search Settings for Fingerprint always on. Samsung says users with a registered fingerprint may be able to turn this off or choose supported cover- or main-screen options. The available choices depend on the device.

Samsung UK’s guidance, updated August 25, 2020, says a small, pixel-sized flicker can be normal proximity-sensor operation on certain models when the display is dark and Always On Display is set to Tap to show. Samsung lists the Galaxy A91, Galaxy A90 5G, Galaxy Note10 series, Galaxy S20 series, and Galaxy Z Flip. This model-specific note should not be assumed to describe every Galaxy phone.
