Those are different problems: YouTube adjusts viewer playback to suit connection and device conditions, while creators should check their encoder and YouTube Studio stream health. A change that coincides with the next playlist item is worth testing, but YouTube’s help does not identify playlist transitions as the cause or promise that a manual quality choice will persist between items.
First identify which resolution is changing
A viewer’s selected playback quality is not the same as the resolution being sent by the creator’s encoder. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions). Consequently, an Auto playback change alone does not show that the source stream changed.

| What you observe | What to check first |
|---|---|
| The picture looks softer, but you are watching someone else’s stream | Open the player’s Settings → Quality and see whether Auto selected a lower playback resolution. |
| You own the stream and viewers report a quality or buffering problem | Check YouTube Studio stream health and compare it with the encoder’s actual output settings and connection indicators. |
If you are watching: compare Auto with a fixed quality
- In the YouTube player, select Settings → Quality.
- Note the current selection. If it is Auto, choose a specific available resolution and compare the picture.
- When the next playlist item begins, check Settings → Quality again. YouTube’s viewer guidance explains manual quality selection but does not say whether it carries over to the next item, so test rather than assuming it is locked for the playlist (YouTube Help: change video quality on a computer).
YouTube says Auto playback quality can respond to internet connection speed, player or screen size, the original video’s quality, and browser support. A larger player does not itself improve the source; the available playback quality also depends on the original video. Higher playback quality may use more data and buffer more often.
Check the connection and device
- Compare playback on a stable connection; if possible, test Wi-Fi against another reliable connection.
- Reduce competing network use and move the device closer to the router if its signal is weak.
- If the issue appears only in one browser or on one device, compare another supported browser or screen before changing creator-side stream settings.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends improving the device’s connection to the router and minimizing other connected-device use when internet speed is low (YouTube Help: troubleshoot streaming and video issues on a computer).

If you own the stream: inspect stream health and encoder output
- Open YouTube Studio and inspect the stream’s health messages while it is live. Treat these as evidence about the incoming stream, not as a viewer’s playback-quality setting.
- Compare the encoder’s actual resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with what you configured. A configured value is not proof that the encoder is sending it consistently.
- Check the stream-health status for configuration issues. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health issues such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and insufficient video ingestion; inadequate ingestion can lead to buffering for viewers (Google for Developers: LiveStreams).
- Test the upload connection and monitor stream health with representative audio and motion before relying on the setup live. YouTube recommends testing bitrate and the stream content, then watching health indicators during the broadcast (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Use encoder settings as a baseline, not a diagnosis
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching entry on YouTube’s current encoder-settings page rather than raising bitrate blindly. A viewer-side Auto change does not by itself justify increasing the source resolution or bitrate.
If you stream with OBS: read the connection indicators
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. If dropped frames are increasing and the indicator is yellow or red, OBS says the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Help Portal: dropped frames and connection issues).

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a basic configuration, then test again against your available upload capacity.
- If the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate, reduce the streaming load or improve the connection, then verify the result in OBS and YouTube Studio.
- Do not interpret an isolated playback-quality drop on a viewer’s device as proof that OBS is dropping frames.
Why playlist timing does not prove the playlist caused it
If the resolution changes just as the next item starts, record that timing and check the player’s selected quality again. YouTube documents adaptive playback and manual quality controls, but its viewer guidance does not establish playlist transitions as a cause or say that a selected quality persists across items. Separate coincidence from cause by checking whether the viewer’s connection or playback selection changed and, if you own the broadcast, whether Studio or the encoder shows an ingestion problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo can run the stream from the cloud: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free trial.
