If YouTube Live reports that your bitrate is too high, check the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s settings for that stream. There is no single published bitrate cutoff that explains every encoder’s warning. Use the applicable bitrate recommendation as a starting point; if your stream uses a non-variable resolution entrypoint, set the exact bitrate shown in YouTube Studio’s Ingestion Settings. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the selected resolution, lower the resolution.
What the warning means—and what it does not
YouTube’s error guidance labels the related issue “Incorrect bit rates.” Its recommended bitrate depends on the video codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. The warning text alone does not tell you a universal threshold: encoder wording and stream configuration can differ. Diagnose the stream using its actual output settings and the messages in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

The figures below are YouTube Help’s published recommended video ingestion bitrates; the page does not state a publication year. They are recommendations, not universal warning limits. YouTube separately instructs users of a non-variable resolution entrypoint to use the exact bitrate selected in Ingestion Settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck and correct the stream settings
- Inspect YouTube’s stream status. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the stream, and check the chosen ingestion resolution and any stream-health message. The stream setup flow uses a stream key entered in your encoder.
- Verify what the encoder is actually sending. Check the output codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate—not just the values you intended to select. Choose the bitrate row matching both your codec and the stream’s resolution and frame rate.
- Check the entrypoint’s bitrate requirement. If you are using a non-variable resolution entrypoint, open Ingestion Settings and use the exact bitrate selected there.
- Reduce resolution if the connection is the constraint. Run an upload-speed test. If your available upload bandwidth cannot reliably sustain the selected resolution, choose a lower one and match the encoder’s bitrate to the applicable setting.
- Review the other encoder settings. Use CBR (constant bitrate) encoding, set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. Confirm that the codec is supported for the protocol you selected.
- Test before going public. Use motion and audio similar to the planned stream. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting, then monitor stream health and messages while live.
YouTube’s recommended video bitrates
These are recommendations from YouTube Help; publication year is not stated. Values are in Mbps. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps. Neither value is a universal warning threshold.

Other encoder requirements to check
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. It lists frame rates up to 60 fps and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the bitrate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; changing one of those can change the appropriate recommendation.
Common causes and fixes
- Bitrate is set for a different resolution or frame rate: verify the encoder’s actual output and select the matching YouTube recommendation.
- Codec does not match the bitrate you chose: check whether the encoder is outputting H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, then use the corresponding recommendation.
- Non-variable entrypoint has a specific bitrate: use the exact value selected in Ingestion Settings rather than substituting a general recommendation.
- Upload capacity is insufficient for the selected resolution: test upload speed and lower the resolution to one the connection can sustain reliably.
- Stream health remains poor during a test: check the Live Control Room’s messages and preview, and verify bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, codec, and resolution in the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different approach from diagnosing a live encoder feed: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
