Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBlurry YouTube Live video can originate in the recording, the live encoder’s output, the connection carrying that output, or the quality being viewed on the viewer’s device. Start by checking the source file and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview; then compare the actual stream settings and health messages with YouTube’s recommendations. There is no single setting that fixes every case.
1. Check whether the original video is already soft
Play the pre-recorded file locally at its intended resolution before changing live settings. If it is blurry there too, the problem is in the source or its earlier export: a live encoder cannot be assumed to restore detail that is missing or was lost through compression.

- Check the file’s resolution and frame rate, and compare them with the format you intend to send to YouTube.
- Look for softness, blockiness, or compression artifacts in the local file. If they are present, use a better-quality source or export before troubleshooting the stream.
2. Verify what the live encoder actually sends
Live ingest recommendations are not the same as recommendations for uploading a finished video file. YouTube’s current live settings recommend CBR and specify bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, the recommendations include:
| Live ingest format | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations for H.264 live ingest, accessed in 2026—not guarantees of sharpness or universal targets for every codec and configuration. Match the relevant row to the resolution and frame rate actually being sent, not merely the source file’s properties. YouTube’s live guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For SDR, it recommends Rec. 709. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Keep upload-file targets separate
For a finished video uploaded to YouTube, its published guidance instead recommends variable bitrate, H.264, progressive scan, closed GOP, and encoding at the same frame rate as recorded. For a 1080p SDR upload, it lists 8 Mbps at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates. Those figures are for uploaded files, not live ingest; substituting one workflow’s bitrate for the other can lead to a poor live configuration. See YouTube’s upload encoding settings.
3. Read the Live Control Room preview and health messages
Check the preview before making the stream public, then monitor the stream-health notifications while testing. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes diagnostics for low bitrate, suboptimal resolution, a very small GOP, and insufficient video ingestion. Use the actual message to focus your adjustment rather than changing several settings at once. YouTube notes that a very small GOP can reduce image quality; an overly long keyframe interval can cause buffering. See YouTube’s live-stream health documentation.

- Confirm that the preview is receiving the intended resolution and frame rate.
- If YouTube reports low bitrate, compare the encoder’s actual outgoing bitrate with the recommendation for the ingest format.
- If it reports suboptimal resolution or insufficient ingestion, verify the output resolution and whether frames are reaching YouTube consistently.
- If it flags GOP or keyframe behavior, check the encoder’s interval against YouTube’s 2-second recommendation and 4-second maximum.
4. Check upload capacity and stability
Measure upload bandwidth, not download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate. That headroom matters when the connection is unstable, shared, or carrying more than one stream. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.

- Account for other devices or activity using the same connection.
- Look for interruptions or fluctuating outgoing bitrate during the test.
An unstable connection can make the sent stream fall short or become inconsistent. If the picture is consistently soft while the outgoing stream is stable, investigate the source and encoder settings as well.

5. Separate stream quality from viewer playback quality
If the source file and Live Control Room preview look sharp but a viewer sees blur, compare the viewer’s playback at the same time and resolution on another device or connection. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and networks; the selected playback quality can therefore differ from the incoming feed. YouTube does not specify a guaranteed delay before every rendition settles or one universal viewer-side fix. YouTube describes its live transcoding process here.
6. Test changes methodically
To identify the cause, change one variable at a time while keeping the source constant. Compare two configurations using the same source and note:

Or let it run in the cloud
If the pre-recorded video is ready and you want it to keep playing as a YouTube Live stream without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
