You cannot use SFTP to start a YouTube live stream. YouTube uses an encoder connected to the Live Control Room, with a stream URL and stream key, to receive a live feed. SFTP is a separate asset-delivery option for eligible partners that regularly deliver more than 100 assets a month. If you want a recorded video to appear as a live broadcast, play it through an encoder on your Mac—or use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos.
Why SFTP will not start your YouTube live stream
YouTube documents SFTP and Aspera for high-volume media and metadata delivery by partners, not for live-stream ingest. Its partner delivery information describes this option for organizations that regularly deliver more than 100 assets per month; eligibility and onboarding for an ordinary channel are not established. A live stream instead sends a real-time feed from an encoder to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. To make a pre-recorded file appear live, the encoder must play the file and send its audio and video as that feed. SFTP software, external storage, and a special Mac adapter are not part of this documented live-stream workflow.

What you need before streaming from a Mac
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the current channel status and eligibility in YouTube Studio before planning a broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Mac running an encoder that can send a live feed to YouTube and play a local media file. Exact file-source and looping controls depend on the encoder; check that app’s current macOS documentation for how to load a file and manage audio, repeat, and playback.
- The stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret: it authorizes an encoder to send a stream to your channel.
- A reliable upload connection with bandwidth headroom. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom in its encoder guidance: YouTube’s encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
How to send a pre-recorded file as a live stream
- Confirm you can go live. Open YouTube Studio and check that live streaming is enabled for your channel. If you have never streamed before, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Set the audience, visibility, title, and other event details there.
- Configure the encoder. In your encoder, enter the stream URL and stream key displayed by YouTube. Use the RTMPS URL or preset if the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; it encrypts the connection to YouTube. Do not share or publish the stream key.
- Load the recorded file using the encoder’s documented media playback feature. Check that the correct video and audio sources are selected. If you need the video to repeat, confirm the encoder supports looping and enable it using that app’s instructions. YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not specify Mac app menus for loading or looping a local file, so do not assume the controls are identical across encoders.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Check the Live Control Room preview, watch page, picture, sound, and stream health before telling viewers the broadcast is ready. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then click Go live in the Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live-streaming instructions.
- End the event deliberately. Follow the encoder and Live Control Room workflow you configured to stop the feed and end the broadcast. YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours; do not rely on that archive behavior as a substitute for ending the stream.
Prepare the stream and avoid common failures
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. That gives you time to catch a missing preview, playback issue, or connection problem before viewers arrive. Use the official encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance for current YouTube recommendations.

- No live option or the stream will not activate: verify the channel and check for live-stream restrictions in the last 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- No preview appears: confirm the encoder is running, the correct YouTube stream URL and key are entered, and the Live Control Room is open to the matching stream. Check the encoder’s own status and logs.
- Video appears but audio does not: inspect the encoder’s selected audio source and the file’s audio track, then confirm sound in the preview before going live.
- The upload is unstable or the stream health is poor: check upstream bandwidth and reduce competing network use. YouTube advises maintaining 20% bandwidth headroom rather than using the full available upload capacity.
- The video stops instead of repeating: verify that the selected encoder supports looping local media and that repeat is enabled. File playback and loop controls vary by app.
- The wrong broadcast receives the feed: stop the encoder and compare its configured URL and key with the stream shown in the Live Control Room. Keep keys private and use the correct key for each event.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
A pre-recorded file does not bypass YouTube’s copyright or live-stream policies. Use video, music, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the channel’s current eligibility and restrictions before scheduling. A recording should also be suitable for the audience and represented accurately in the stream title and details. If you are unsure whether you have permission to use a track or clip, resolve that before broadcasting rather than relying on the fact that the material is prerecorded.
