1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf YouTube buffers only in the evening, congestion is one possibility—not proof that your ISP is at fault. Test during the slowdown and compare YouTube across devices, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and another internet connection. Those comparisons can show whether the symptom follows one device, your home Wi-Fi, or the connection coming into your home.
What night-only buffering does—and does not—tell you
The timing is a useful clue because household internet use and nearby Wi-Fi activity can change through the day. But the clock alone cannot distinguish busy home Wi-Fi from a weak signal, competing household traffic, equipment limitations, or an issue farther upstream with the ISP. Google lists all of these as possible contributors to slow internet and Wi-Fi problems (Google Home and Nest Help; Google).

Nor does buffering by itself establish ISP throttling, a YouTube outage, or a defective router. A speed test can be useful context, but it may not reproduce YouTube playback or the route to YouTube. Compare the actual video across conditions as well.
Diagnose it during the evening slowdown
-
Record what is happening
While the problem is occurring, note the time, device, whether you are using Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the playback quality, and whether one video or many are affected. Check whether other services on that device also stall and whether other household devices are slow. On a TV, YouTube recommends checking connection speed near the TV and manually lowering playback quality. Its help page recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming; this is guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback (YouTube Help).

-
Check whether the issue follows YouTube or one device
Try YouTube on another supported device. If possible, try the affected device on another internet connection, such as mobile data, taking any data charges or limits into account. YouTube also recommends restarting or updating the app or device and trying another connection. If only one device or app has the problem while other devices and services work normally, start with that app, browser, or device rather than replacing network equipment (YouTube Help).
-
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the device and router have Ethernet ports, connect them directly and replay YouTube during the same evening period. Compare this with Wi-Fi both near the router and at the usual viewing spot. If Ethernet or nearby Wi-Fi is noticeably better, the wireless path, placement, or interference may be involved. If Ethernet is also slow across several devices and services, the issue may be farther upstream. This is a diagnostic inference, not a guarantee that one test identifies the cause.

-
Reduce local network load and test location
Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity, and check whether other people or devices are using the connection. Then repeat playback near the router and at the normal viewing location. Walls, distance, device capability, Wi-Fi frequency, and nearby wireless networks can affect performance; connected devices also compete for available bandwidth (Google Home and Nest Help; Google).

Keep a short comparison log
For a few evenings, record the time, device, connection type, location, whether downloads were paused, and whether YouTube or other services were affected. If the issue persists on Ethernet and affects multiple devices or services, share the log and your results with your ISP. Ask about local network issues, maintenance, or plan limitations; the ISP controls the bandwidth entering your home (Google Home and Nest Help).

How to interpret the comparisons
| Comparison | What a difference may indicate | What it cannot prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi versus Ethernet on the same device, during the problem window | Better playback on Ethernet points toward the wireless path, coverage, placement, or interference. | It does not prove the router is defective or rule out every upstream issue. |
| Wi-Fi near the router versus at the normal viewing spot | Better playback nearby suggests distance, walls, or local radio conditions may matter. | It does not identify a specific source of interference. |
| One device versus another, or YouTube versus other services | A problem limited to one device or app points toward that device or app; several affected devices and services suggest a broader connection issue. | It does not establish a YouTube outage or ISP throttling. |
| Home internet versus another connection | If the same device plays well on another connection, the home connection path deserves closer attention. | It does not identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, the router, or the ISP. |
| Busy household network versus large transfers paused | Improvement with transfers paused suggests competition for available bandwidth at home. | It does not rule out a separate Wi-Fi or ISP issue. |
When to change equipment—and when not to
Do not buy a router or mesh system just because buffering happens at night. Consider Wi-Fi equipment only after tests show Ethernet works well but wireless performance is poor at the viewing location, or nearby Wi-Fi interference or coverage appears relevant. First try practical changes such as moving closer to the router or reducing obstructions.
A Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable can help you make a wired comparison if both endpoints have Ethernet ports. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 for network links faster than 100 Mbps. The cable is a test aid, not a fix for congestion upstream of your home (Google Home and Nest Help).

Common patterns and next steps
- Only one device buffers: Compare another app and another device, then follow YouTube’s app, browser, or device troubleshooting before changing the home network (YouTube Help).
- Wi-Fi buffers, but Ethernet plays smoothly: Focus on Wi-Fi coverage, device location, and nearby wireless conditions. A router or access point change is worth considering only if these checks point to a local wireless problem.
- Every device is slow on Wi-Fi, but Ethernet is fine: The wireless path is the stronger lead. Compare performance near the router with performance at the usual viewing spot.
- YouTube and other services are slow on Ethernet: Keep the time-and-test log and contact your ISP about recurring evening issues, maintenance, or plan limitations.
- YouTube buffers but other services appear fine: Try another YouTube device and connection before concluding that the ISP is treating YouTube differently. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors may affect live programming and broadcast delay; that statement concerns live programming and does not establish the cause of on-demand buffering (YouTube Help).
Why streaming traffic can be sensitive to congestion
A 2015 Google-authored paper on YouTube video streaming describes bursty traffic triggering packet loss and stressing router queues, which can cause TCP congestion control to respond. That is background on streaming and network behavior, not a diagnosis of any particular household’s connection (“Trickle: Rate Limiting YouTube Video Streaming”).
