Recommended bitrate for a 720p YouTube Live stream
YouTube’s live encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these 720p recommendations. The bitrate is for the video sent from your encoder to YouTube (ingestion).

The minimum is not the recommended target. Use the applicable recommendation only if your encoder and sustained upload can maintain it reliably; an unstable stream may be worse than a lower, stable setting. The recommendations do not mean that viewers will necessarily see the same bitrate or an identical image.

Settings to verify before changing bitrate
Confirm the encoder’s actual output
Check the encoder’s output configuration rather than relying on a 720p label in the streaming software. Verify resolution, frame rate, codec and video bitrate. A mismatch—such as the software outputting a different resolution or a bitrate below the configured target—can make the picture soft. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether it affects the result.
Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Its guide lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 or AV1 among the encoder options, and supports up to 60 fps. For SDR video, it recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.

Choose frame rate for the content and connection
YouTube lists the same recommended bitrate for 720p30 and 720p60 within each codec grouping. Sixty frames per second can show motion more smoothly, but select it only if your encoder and sustained upload can carry it reliably. Compare the stream under movement similar to your real broadcast rather than judging a static scene alone.

Test and check YouTube stream health
- Set the encoder output: choose 720p, the intended frame rate and codec, then set the corresponding recommended bitrate if the connection can sustain it. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Run an unlisted test: test audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Inspect stream health while the test is running: check whether YouTube flags low video bitrate, a non-optimal or unsupported resolution, a keyframe interval that is too long, or video ingestion starvation.
- Adjust one variable at a time: if the stream is unhealthy, reduce frame rate or bitrate as appropriate, or correct the setting YouTube identifies. Repeat the test before going live publicly.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health issues including bitrateLow, videoResolutionSuboptimal, gopSizeLong and videoIngestionStarved. Ingestion starvation means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, so viewers may experience buffering. What the BSNL connection can—and cannot—tell you
“BSNL connection” alone is not enough to assign a cause or a usable upload rate. The relevant details include your plan, location, connection type, router, competing household traffic, sustained upload performance and route to YouTube’s ingest server. A speed-test peak by itself does not establish the rate reaching YouTube ingest.
During an unlisted test, compare a representative sustained upload test with YouTube’s stream-health readout. If the stream cannot sustain the target or YouTube reports low bitrate or starvation, try a lower bitrate or frame rate and test again. This identifies whether the stream is healthy at the settings you can maintain; it does not prove that BSNL is responsible.

Optional wired-versus-Wi-Fi check
If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, compare an otherwise identical test over Ethernet. This can help isolate the local wireless link as one possible factor. A Cat 6 cable may be used for that diagnostic, but it cannot guarantee an improvement if the limit is plan capacity, congestion or the route to YouTube ingest.
