First work out whether OBS stopped streaming, YouTube stopped receiving the encoder feed, or only the VLC source stopped producing audio or video. Match the item-switch time against OBS, YouTube Live Control Room, and any local recording before changing settings.
First determine what actually disconnected
A brief black screen or silence at an item boundary is not, by itself, proof that the YouTube broadcast ended. The failure can occur at different points: the VLC source may stop or stall; OBS may lose or fail to encode its output; or YouTube may stop receiving a healthy ingest feed. YouTube’s Live streaming error messages page describes timestamped errors and stream-health information, which you can compare with OBS and your recording.

- Note the exact time of the next reproducible playlist transition. Record which item is ending and which is starting.
- Check OBS’s streaming status and stats. Did OBS still show that it was streaming? Did its output or connection indicators change?
- Check the local recording, if you have one. Does it continue through the boundary, or does it show the same gap, freeze, or audio loss?
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Compare its timestamped health messages with the item-change time.
If OBS remains live and the recording is continuous while YouTube reports a problem at the same time, investigate ingest and the outbound connection. If the recording also breaks, start with OBS, the VLC source, system load, and the media file. These clues help prioritize checks; none proves a particular root cause on its own. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder output, CPU load, stream health, source quality, and the outbound connection as appropriate.

Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS
OBS’s Media Sources documentation distinguishes the VLC Video source from the built-in Media Source. VLC Video uses VLC libraries and can play a playlist. OBS says VLC must be installed; a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Sources Guide can help identify which kind of source you added.

Inspect the playlist and the two files at the boundary
In the VLC Video source’s properties, verify the playlist entries and the loop or shuffle choices you intend to use. Review visibility behavior and the network-caching setting if relevant to the source. Then test the exact file that ends immediately before the failure and the file that follows it. A problem that occurs only with one pair of files is a useful lead; it is not enough to establish that a particular codec or file caused the failure.
OBS documents playlist support, but does not promise seamless playback at every item change, crossfades, or identical behavior across all installations and media. A source boundary can therefore be a useful point to investigate without proving that it ended the YouTube broadcast.
Run a controlled playlist-switch test
Keep the same media and stream settings while comparing two workflows. Avoid changing bitrate, resolution, scene setup, and playlist behavior all at once: if the problem changes, you want to know which variable mattered.
- Test the existing single-source playlist. Keep OBS streaming and reproduce the transition between the same two items. Note the OBS status, local recording, and Live Control Room messages.
- Prepare a separate scene for the next item or source. While OBS stays live, switch to that scene and check whether the media starts or restarts as configured, and whether audio and video continue.
- Compare the evidence. Note whether only one handoff method fails and whether the same item boundary causes trouble in both.
- Repeat enough to establish whether it is reproducible. Use the same files and conditions, and record the timestamps of any interruption.
Scene-based handling is one possible workflow, not a guaranteed fix. An OBS forum discussion about updating a VLC playlist during a YouTube stream is community advice, not proof that a scene handoff resolves this particular fault.

Check YouTube ingest settings only when the evidence points there
Use the timestamped Live Control Room messages to decide whether to investigate the encoder-to-YouTube feed. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps as the recommended bitrate at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a specific remedy for a VLC playlist transition.
- Check the recommended bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream.
- Check that the encoder is configured for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Test with audio and motion representative of what you plan to stream, and watch YouTube’s stream health.
- If OBS’s encoder output appears healthy but YouTube reports a problem, follow YouTube’s guidance to check the outbound connection.
Do not change ingest settings simply because the failure happens at a playlist boundary. The boundary is a timing clue; the dashboard and OBS evidence should guide the next test.

Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | Where to focus |
|---|---|
| OBS still indicates streaming; the local recording is continuous; YouTube reports a timestamped health or ingest error. | Compare the error time with the transition and investigate the encoder-to-YouTube feed and outbound connection. |
| The local recording has the same gap, freeze, or missing audio as the live output. | Start with the VLC source, the two media files, OBS behavior, and system load. |
| Only one specific item or item pair triggers the problem. | Test those exact files and inspect the source behavior at that boundary before changing unrelated stream settings. |
| The single-source playlist fails, but a prepared scene handoff behaves differently. | Compare how the source is started and whether it restarts on the scene transition; repeat the test before treating the handoff as a fix. |
| OBS appears healthy but stream quality is poor. | Check source quality, YouTube dashboard errors, CPU load, and the local archive, as directed by YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. |
These are diagnostic priorities, not one-to-one root-cause rules. The available documentation does not identify the cause of a particular disconnect without the OBS log, YouTube health timestamps, operating system and software versions, media formats, and a reproducible test.
