The adapter, its supported bands and Wi-Fi standard, its USB connection, signal quality, interference, drivers, and router settings all affect the result. Check those factors in order before replacing hardware.
Why the router’s advertised speed is not your computer’s speed
A router’s advertised Wi-Fi capability describes supported features or theoretical maximums; it is not a promise that every connected device will reach that rate. The adapter must support the relevant Wi-Fi standard and band, and the connection has to operate in conditions that allow it to use them. The internet plan and other network limits can also keep an internet speed test below the Wi-Fi link rate.

TP-Link notes that an adapter’s theoretical speed and band support depend on its Wi-Fi standard, while attainable performance also depends on the router, channel width, signal conditions, and USB connection. A computer cannot use a band or capability its adapter does not support. TP-Link’s USB Wi-Fi adapter overview explains the adapter’s role in the connection.

How frequency band and signal affect speed
Wi-Fi bands make different trade-offs. As Microsoft’s home-layout guidance explains, 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther and passes obstacles better, but offers slower throughput, fewer non-overlapping channels, and more congestion. 5 GHz generally offers faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter range and weaker wall penetration. A 6 GHz connection requires a compatible Wi-Fi 6E router, device, and drivers, and its range is shorter.

- 𝟓𝐝𝐁𝐢 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 – The high gain antenna of the Archer T2U Plus greatly enhances the reception and transmission of WiFi signal strengths.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
As a result, 5 GHz may be faster near the router but weaker through walls; 2.4 GHz may be slower yet more reliable farther away. Nearby networks, solid obstacles, metal surfaces, and the adapter’s position or antenna orientation can also affect the signal. A wider channel is not automatically better if interference or a weak signal makes the connection unstable.
What the USB connection can—and cannot—explain
USB interface rates are connection ceilings, not Wi-Fi speed predictions. Microsoft’s USB FAQ lists USB 2.0 high-speed at a maximum transmission rate of 480 Mbps and USB 3.0 at up to 5 Gbps. Those figures describe the USB interface, not expected internet throughput from an adapter.

A USB 3.0 device can fall back to USB 2.0 high speed when connected through a USB 2.0 hub or cable. Check the adapter’s requirements and connection path if its model needs USB 3.0. But the USB port is only one possible bottleneck: it does not explain slow performance unless the adapter and actual connection make it relevant.

Diagnose the slowdown before buying an adapter
- Measure a fair baseline. Run several speed tests and record the results, then repeat from other locations. Keep the same computer, network, test service, and approximate time when comparing results. Microsoft recommends testing before and after changes in its Wi-Fi and home layout guidance. Do not compare an internet speed test directly with a router’s theoretical maximum.
- Confirm the adapter model, capabilities, and band. Check the adapter’s supported Wi-Fi standards and frequency bands, then confirm the router offers a compatible band. An adapter that supports only 2.4 GHz cannot join a 5 GHz network. If the router uses separate network names for its bands, connect to each supported one in turn to compare performance.
- Check the link rate and USB path. If the adapter or operating system displays an association or link rate, use it as a diagnostic clue—not as a promise of internet speed. Confirm that the adapter is in a suitable port and is not passing through a slower hub or cable when its specifications require USB 3.0.
- Try a better position. Move the adapter away from the back of a metal desktop case and other obstructions where practical. Test a clearer path toward the router and antenna orientations supported by the adapter’s manufacturer. Intel’s Wi-Fi connection checks include reducing obstacles as a troubleshooting measure.
- Compare bands and channel conditions. Try 5 GHz if the adapter supports it and the signal is strong enough. If walls or distance weaken that connection, compare it with 2.4 GHz rather than assuming the higher-frequency band will always perform better. Channel congestion and router channel selection can affect results.
- Check drivers and power or software settings. Install the current driver for the exact adapter and operating system. On Windows, Microsoft lists setting the wireless adapter power mode to Maximum Performance as a troubleshooting option in its Wi-Fi connection guidance. TP-Link also identifies computer security or network-management software and router firmware among potential checks in its adapter speed troubleshooting guide. Change one setting at a time and retest; do not leave security software disabled just to chase a speed result.
How to read the results
Compare your recorded results across locations, bands, and individual changes. A marked improvement when the adapter is repositioned points toward signal or obstruction; a difference between bands suggests range or congestion is relevant. A low displayed link rate can help narrow the problem to the wireless connection, while a good link rate alongside a slow internet test suggests other limits may be involved. Neither measurement alone identifies every cause, so use controlled comparisons rather than treating one reading as a diagnosis.

These are manufacturer guidance figures, not independent benchmark results or a guaranteed conversion for every network. Actual results depend on the adapter and conditions.

Consider a replacement only after checking the connection and environment. New hardware may address a real client limitation if the current adapter lacks a band or Wi-Fi standard you need, requires a USB interface your computer does not provide, or cannot be positioned effectively. Match any replacement to the router, operating system, available USB ports, and the actual room and distance where you use it.

Compare supported Wi-Fi generation and bands, operating-system and router compatibility, USB interface, antenna design and placement flexibility, and current manufacturer driver support. A higher advertised maximum alone does not guarantee a faster connection: it cannot by itself fix interference, weak coverage, or an internet-service limit. TP-Link says USB and PCIe adapters can support the same Wi-Fi standards; results depend on the specific product and setup, so there is no universal ranking between those form factors or one best adapter for every home.
