They address different layers, so a dependable workflow can use both—and must still review financial assumptions and formulas independently.
What each approach does
JSON Schema defines the data contract
JSON Schema is a declarative language for describing and validating the structure, constraints, and data types of JSON documents, as the official documentation explains. For a financial-model input object, a schema can specify required fields, data types, allowed categories, and selected constraints. The current published specification is 2020-12, organized into Core and Validation; choose a validator that supports the dialect and features you use rather than assuming all implementations behave identically. See the specification.

A spreadsheet template defines the workbook surface
A template provides a prepared workbook layout for inputs, calculations, and outputs. Excel’s XML mapping features can map XML schema elements to worksheet cells or tables, and Microsoft documents using mapped XML data with existing calculation models and templates. This is an XML/XSD capability, not native mapping from an arbitrary JSON Schema file to cells. See Microsoft’s XML in Excel overview.

How they compare
| Decision | JSON Schema | Spreadsheet template |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Constrains JSON shape, types, and selected data rules. | Organizes workbook entry, calculations, inspection, and presentation. |
| Best fit | Checking structured data at a generation or system interface boundary. | Placing inputs and reviewing formulas and outputs in a familiar workbook. |
| Does not prove | That assumptions are realistic, financial logic is sound, or a model suits a business decision. | That inputs are correct, assumptions are sound, or formulas are error-free. |
| Typical pipeline position | Before structured data is consumed downstream. | When values are placed into the model for delivery and review. |
This is a practical comparison of their documented roles, not a published head-to-head performance test. Neither method alone establishes the financial correctness of an AI-generated model.

Use both in a controlled workflow
- Define the contract. Specify required fields, types, allowed categories, units, currency, period labels, and what null or empty values mean. Declare the JSON Schema dialect and use a validator that supports it.
- Generate and validate data separately. Validate the AI-produced JSON against the contract before passing it downstream. A valid result means the data conforms to declared structural rules; it does not mean the forecast makes economic sense.
- Populate a controlled workbook. Map approved values to designated input locations and preserve the template’s named input and output areas. If using Excel’s documented XML mapping, treat it as XML data mapped to cells—not as direct JSON Schema-to-cell validation.
- Review the workbook independently. Check formula consistency, units, dates, signs, source links, scenario behavior, and key outputs. Ask a qualified reviewer to challenge assumptions and inspect edge cases.
Can JSON Schema validate an AI-generated spreadsheet?
Not directly in the sense of certifying an Excel workbook’s financial model. JSON Schema validates JSON documents, not worksheet formulas or the financial logic of an arbitrary workbook. Excel’s JavaScript API documentation describes JSON metadata schemas for cell values, including properties such as type, basicType, and basicValue; entity values may also contain text, nested data types, and arrays. That API representation is not evidence that Excel validates a workbook against any chosen JSON Schema. See Excel.JsonCellValue.
If an AI system emits JSON first, you can validate that intermediate object, then transfer its approved values into a workbook. Validate the workbook and its formulas through a separate review process.

Using Copilot instructions in Excel
Microsoft documents workbook-specific Copilot rules stored in a visible worksheet titled .Rules. The instructions can cover formatting, custom functions, layout, and formula-driven behavior; Microsoft describes their purpose as standardizing workbook appearance and behavior. The documentation also says rules are fully supported only in English and that Copilot behavior and available models can change. Treat these rules as changeable instructions, not controls that guarantee correctness. See Microsoft Support’s Copilot rules guidance.

The 2025 Alpha Excel Benchmark paper by David Noever and Forrest McKee reports converting 113 Financial Modeling World Cup challenges into JSON formats for programmatic evaluation. It reports variation by challenge category, including stronger pattern-recognition performance and difficulty with complex numerical reasoning. That suggests AI spreadsheet-modeling performance should be assessed by task and output; it does not compare JSON Schema with spreadsheet templates or show that either guarantees reliable models. See the Alpha Excel Benchmark preprint.

The available evidence does not establish a measured winner for accuracy, time savings, or error rate between schema-first and template-first workflows. Choose based on where you need controls: structured data validation, workbook organization and review, or both.
