The correct adapter and cable depend on the exact streaming model.
Why won’t my TV USB port power my streaming stick?
A USB port can provide power without providing enough for a particular streamer to operate reliably. Amazon says Fire TV displays a low-power notification when it detects insufficient power from the TV’s USB port. Google says Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer (4K) may not get enough power from a TV USB port to function properly. That does not mean every TV USB port is inadequate: the result depends on the port and the streaming device.

A cable that fits is not proof that the power supply is suitable. A loose connection, an unsuitable cable, or an accessory in the power path can also interfere. Google warns that an unsupported replacement cable may cause a reboot loop.
Fix the power problem in this order
- Identify the device and warning. Note the exact model and generation, and read the on-screen message. Power guidance for one brand or generation may not apply to another.
- Reseat the power cable. Disconnect and firmly reconnect both ends. For the Google devices covered by its low-power guidance, use the included cable and adapter, and remove any USB-C hub or switch from the power path.
- Try another TV USB port, if appropriate. Amazon suggests trying another port for Fire TV; if the TV has a USB 3.0 port, Amazon says that may be an option. This is a low-risk check, but it cannot guarantee the port will supply enough power.
- Switch to wall power if the warning remains. Connect the streamer using its supplied adapter and cable to a reliable wall outlet. Amazon and Google both recommend wall power when their devices report inadequate USB power.
- Check the cable, adapter and outlet. Confirm the adapter is connected securely and the outlet works. Use a manufacturer-approved cable; do not assume a different cable is compatible.
- Isolate the remaining fault. If the streamer still fails, try another compatible power source or cable. For a Chromecast with no light, Google also suggests testing another device on the TV’s USB port and trying a different power source and power cord. Replace hardware only after checking the exact model’s requirements.
Use the power rating for your exact device
Do not treat USB adapter ratings as universal. The official guidance gives different examples for different devices:

The figures above come from undated live support pages checked on 2026-10-04, not from a general standard for all streamers. When comparing a replacement, match the required voltage and current, connector, cable compatibility and length, and manufacturer support. Verify current guidance for your exact model before buying.
Why does my Fire TV say insufficient USB power?
Amazon says the warning appears when a Fire TV device detects that the TV’s USB port is supplying insufficient power. Try another TV USB port, including USB 3.0 if available; if the message continues, connect Fire TV to a wall outlet using an adapter and cable appropriate for that model. Amazon’s general Fire TV low-power help specifies a 5W (5V, 1A or equivalent) adapter, while its Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation) setup guidance describes a 5V/1A adapter and USB-C cable for the insufficient-power case. Check your own model’s connector and instructions rather than applying one generation’s setup to all Fire TV devices. What if a Chromecast has no light or keeps restarting?
For Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer (4K), start with the supplied adapter and cable plugged into a reliable wall outlet. Remove hubs or switches from the power path. If a Chromecast has no light, Google recommends trying another power source and power cord, and testing another device on the TV USB port. If it keeps rebooting, return to the included or manufacturer-approved cable: Google warns that a different, unsupported cable may cause a reboot loop.
