If your catalytic converter has been stolen, stay away from any active theft and call emergency services; for a theft you discover afterward, report it to local police promptly and keep the case number. Contact your insurer, then have a qualified repair shop inspect the exhaust before you decide whether the car is safe to drive or arrange a replacement. The right replacement depends on your vehicle and local emissions rules.
What to do first
- If the theft is in progress, do not confront the thief. Move to a safe place and call emergency services. California’s Air Resources Board advises calling police rather than engaging someone stealing a converter. Use your local police department’s current instructions for emergencies, non-emergency calls, or online reports. California Air Resources Board guidance; Saint Paul Police Department guidance.
- Report a completed theft promptly. Give police the vehicle’s make, model, year, license plate, VIN, when and where you found the damage, and what you can see. Ask for a report or case number and save it. NHTSA advises victims of vehicle theft to contact police immediately and notes that the report or case number may be needed for an insurance claim. NHTSA vehicle-theft guidance.
- Call your insurer. Ask whether your policy covers the converter and related exhaust damage, what deductible applies, whether an adjuster or preferred repair process is required, and which documents to submit. Have the police report or case number available. Coverage depends on the policy and circumstances, so do not assume the loss will be paid. California Bureau of Automotive Repair guidance; Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services guidance.
- Arrange an inspection before replacement. A missing converter changes the exhaust system, and nearby components may also be damaged. California’s Air Resources Board recommends having a trusted mechanic inspect other exhaust components. A vehicle that suddenly becomes much louder may be missing its converter. California Air Resources Board guidance.
- Use a replacement that is legal for your vehicle and location. Ask the repair shop to confirm the part meets requirements for your exact make, model, year, and jurisdiction before installation.
Can you drive with the converter missing?
Do not assume the car is safe to drive just because it starts or moves. The theft can leave the exhaust altered, and damage to other components needs to be assessed. If you are unsure whether the vehicle is safe, do not drive it; contact your insurer and a qualified repair facility about how to proceed. DuPont guidance on catalytic-converter theft.

How to handle insurance and repair costs
There is no reliable universal claim outcome or repair price: coverage, deductible, exclusions, and claim handling vary by policy, vehicle, and circumstances. Request a written estimate for your vehicle and ask the insurer how it will handle the claim before authorizing work.

California’s Air Resources Board 2024 fact sheet cites a four-fold increase in monthly converter thefts tracked by the National Insurance Crime Bureau and a rise of more than 300 percent in LAPD thefts between 2019 and 2020; both are historical figures, not current national rates. Saint Paul Police Department’s 2026 brochure gives a local informational estimate of $150–$200 in scrap proceeds per item, depending on converter size and current metal rates—not a universal resale price. In a December 21, 2021 release, Michigan DIFS quoted its director warning that related damage repair could cost as much as $3,000 or more; that is a historical warning, not a present-day estimate for an individual car.

Choosing and installing the replacement
Requirements depend on the vehicle and jurisdiction. California has specific rules: the Bureau of Automotive Repair says a replacement must be an original-equipment manufacturer part or a California Air Resources Board-approved aftermarket unit with an assigned Executive Order number that meets the exact vehicle requirements. The replacement should be installed before the next Smog Check. Confirm current rules with the relevant regulator and your installer. California Bureau of Automotive Repair guidance.
Outside California, check the applicable local emissions requirements rather than assuming California’s approval rules apply everywhere. A qualified shop can verify fit and requirements for your vehicle.

How to reduce the risk of another theft
- Park securely. Use a garage where possible. Otherwise, choose a well-lit, visible, or higher-traffic spot. California’s Air Resources Board identifies garage parking as the best deterrent where available. California Air Resources Board guidance.
- Ask about a compatible physical guard. Available devices include protective plates, shields, clamps, cages, and straps. Have a licensed shop select and install a compatible option. The installation must not damage the converter, conceal required identifying information, or attach or weld directly to the converter. California Bureau of Automotive Repair guidance.
- Consider marking the converter. Ask a mechanic or local police department whether marking it with the VIN or license plate is appropriate. Marking may help identify a recovered converter and may deter theft. California Bureau of Automotive Repair guidance.
- Improve alerts and visibility. The Bureau of Automotive Repair recommends a vibration-calibrated alarm and motion-sensitive lights when a vehicle is parked in a driveway. California Bureau of Automotive Repair guidance.
When comparing guards, check compatibility and clearance for your exact vehicle, installation method, visibility of required identification, and whether the device could interfere with inspection requirements. The Bureau of Automotive Repair describes device types and installation constraints but does not establish comparative performance or guarantee that any guard will prevent theft.
