A task list is not a promise that you will finish everything on it. It is a way to choose what deserves your limited time now—and to accept that other worthwhile work may wait. The practical move is to pick a small number of priorities that fit the work period, do them one at a time, and resist treating every unfinished item as proof of failure.
Why trying to finish everything can get in the way
Thanh Pham’s article opens with an account of Oliver Burkeman trying to optimize the experience of watching the Northern Lights, only to miss being present for it. The page does not identify the original source for that anecdote, so it is best understood here as the article’s illustration: turning every moment into a productivity problem can undermine the experience you meant to have.

This applies to time off as well as work. Turning an evening off into a project—finding the perfect activity, maximizing every hour, or trying to make the break feel sufficiently productive—can leave little room simply to enjoy it. Not every hour needs to produce a measurable result.
Separate recurring maintenance from finishable projects
Some work is a project with a finish line. Other work is maintenance: cooking, cleaning, answering messages, or caring for the routines that keep life going. Maintenance returns because the need returns. Treating it as though it should be permanently completed can make ordinary upkeep feel like evidence that you are always behind.

Whether you're at home, in the office, or on the go, you'll always be able to capture your thoughts and stay on top of your daily routine.
That distinction changes what a list can reasonably promise. A project may come off the list when it is done; recurring care may need a place in your schedule again tomorrow or next week. The goal is not to finish life’s maintenance once and for all, but to give it a realistic share of your capacity without letting it consume every available hour.
Choose among meaningful projects, not just trivial distractions
The familiar “big rocks” metaphor suggests that important priorities fit if you put them in the jar first and fill the gaps with smaller tasks. But sometimes there are more important projects than the available time can hold. The difficult choice is not always between a meaningful project and an unimportant distraction; it may be between several things you genuinely care about.

In that situation, prioritizing means deciding what will wait—or what you will let go—not pretending that every meaningful option can fit. Ask which decisions you are making deliberately and which are happening by default. If you do not choose where your time goes, deadlines, incoming requests, and habit may choose for you.
Make the next work period small enough to act on
Pham’s suggested exercise is concrete: look at the hours you have available, choose two items from a list of twenty, and work through those two in sequence. Two is an example from the article, not a universal quota. The useful constraint is to select a small number that genuinely fits the time available rather than treating the whole list as today’s assignment.

- Check the real window. Decide how much focused work time you have, accounting for meetings, breaks, and fixed commitments.
- Pick a short set. Choose the tasks that matter most for this window and can reasonably fit within it.
- Work sequentially. Give the first task your attention, then move to the next instead of trying to advance everything at once.
- Let the rest remain visible but deferred. Knowing other projects are waiting can feel uncomfortable; that discomfort does not mean you chose incorrectly.
As Pham puts it, “The real productivity trick is tolerating the anxiety of knowing the other projects are waiting outside the door.” The point is not to ignore commitments or abandon work carelessly. It is to distinguish a conscious deferral from an accidental failure to notice what matters.
Balance is not only an individual scheduling problem
Personal choices matter, but work-life balance also depends on conditions such as working hours, vacation, and whether people can share time off. Compressing the same workload into fewer hours may create more pressure rather than more freedom. Likewise, completely independent schedules can make it harder to enjoy leisure together. Pham makes these points as arguments; the article does not provide comparative evidence establishing one arrangement as better for everyone.

That distinction is useful when a personal productivity technique cannot solve the underlying constraint. If the workload exceeds the hours available, a tighter system may help you see the conflict but cannot make the hours appear. Some solutions require renegotiating scope, timing, or shared expectations—not just organizing your list more efficiently.
Use structure only when it helps you choose
A planning system is useful when it makes priorities clearer and helps you follow through. It becomes overhead when maintaining the system takes attention away from the work or encourages you to optimize every moment. Pham’s article recommends Paul Loomans’s book Time Surfing as a challenge to systems-heavy approaches. It also mentions Craft as an example of a note-taking app Oliver Burkeman uses; neither tool is necessary to apply the underlying idea.

A useful test is whether your system helps you answer, “What am I choosing to do in this available time?” If it mainly helps you add more items, refine categories, or measure every moment, it may be reinforcing the assumption that the list must eventually be empty.
Questions to ask when the list keeps growing
- Which two tasks would make the most meaningful use of the next available work period?
- Which unfinished item is a recurring responsibility rather than a project that can be completed once?
- What important work are you deferring consciously, and what is being deferred by default?
- Have you turned a night off into another project instead of letting it be time off?
- What major project are you trying to fit into an already full schedule—and what might you need to postpone or release?
Pham’s article, last updated September 17, 2026, presents these ideas as a practical and philosophical approach, not as conclusions established by named studies. Its account of Burkeman’s Northern Lights experience is not independently identified to a primary source on the page. Read the article by Thanh Pham.
