A failed first attempt to use Kiro CLI on an EC2 instance can happen at two different stages: installing the Linux CLI or signing in from a remote shell. The title alone does not establish which failed—or why—so start by identifying the exact error rather than assuming an EC2-specific cause. Check Linux runtime compatibility first; if installation completed but browser sign-in cannot work over SSH, try Kiro’s documented device flow.
First determine whether installation or login failed
Write down the EC2 image, its release and architecture, the exact command you ran, and the complete error text. Also note whether a kiro-cli command is available after the attempt. An installer error points to a different problem than a successful installation followed by a sign-in prompt that cannot open a browser.

- Installer did not complete: check the supported Linux runtime and whether the instance can reach the installer host.
- CLI installed but sign-in is stuck: use the remote device-flow instructions below.
- You need a non-interactive job: use the documented API-key approach rather than an interactive browser login.
Without the instance details and terminal output, there is no basis to identify one of these as the cause of a particular first-attempt failure.
Check the EC2 Linux environment before retrying
Kiro’s installation documentation lists Linux CLI support as glibc 2.34 or newer, or a musl variant. Compare the instance’s Linux distribution and runtime with that requirement before concluding the installer is broken. The documentation’s stated compatibility is the key check; the fact that an image runs on EC2 does not itself establish compatibility.

Kiro documents this shell installer:
curl -fsSL https://cli.kiro.dev/install | bashRun it only after confirming the instance can reach the installer host. Capture the command’s full output and exit status. If the command fails, that is distinct from a later authentication failure; the title does not say which stage failed.
Sign in from an SSH session with device flow
A remote EC2 host often has no usable local browser. For that case, Kiro documents device-flow sign-in: run kiro-cli login, open the URL it displays in a browser on another device, enter the one-time code, and wait for the CLI to detect that authentication is complete. The authentication guide also describes this remote-login approach.

The CLI reference documents the explicit option kiro-cli login --use-device-flow for remote or SSH environments. This addresses the browser limitation; it does not install the CLI or establish that AWS instance credentials will authenticate a Kiro session.

If your organization uses IAM Identity Center, confirm the identity-provider Start URL and AWS region with your administrator. Those are configuration details for that sign-in method, not values to guess.

Choose authentication for the way you use the instance

Kiro’s authentication guide distinguishes interactive browser sign-in from API-key use for automation, and its headless-mode guide gives the non-interactive command. Do not put an API key in shell history, logs, or an unprotected instance environment. The documentation establishes the authentication mechanism, not a particular secret-storage setup for your EC2 account.

- Run
kiro-cli doctor, as recommended in Kiro’s Setup & First Run guide. - Check that the instance has internet connectivity and that its environment matches Kiro’s supported requirements.
- For Linux logs, inspect
$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/kiro-log/kiro-chat.log. - Compare the diagnostic output and log entries with the original command and error. Keep the installation and login evidence separate so you can identify which stage needs attention.
If the CLI reports an unsupported runtime, address compatibility before repeating sign-in steps. If installation succeeded and the problem is a remote browser prompt, use device flow. If diagnostics and the log do not explain the failure, the exact error and instance image are necessary to narrow it down.
