Confirm the exact network and sign-in steps with venue staff, avoid sensitive activity on public networks, and use Roku’s Hotel & Dorm Connect setup when a browser-based login is required. The Federal Trade Commission says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites use encryption; the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency still recommends caution and says a personal mobile hotspot is generally more secure.
What public Wi-Fi does—and does not—mean for Roku security
A public network is not automatically unsafe, and simply connecting a Roku to one does not mean your passwords have been exposed. The FTC’s February 2023 guidance says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because most websites use encryption. Look for HTTPS or a lock icon when using websites on a phone or computer, but remember that encryption protects information in transit; it does not make a fraudulent website trustworthy. For the Roku connection itself, the cited official guidance explains how to get online, not how the device encrypts traffic or whether a specific hotspot is secure. Roku’s Hotel & Dorm Connect feature addresses browser-based network authentication; it is not a security certification or a promise that the connection is encrypted. CISA advises verifying the network and avoiding sensitive tasks on public Wi-Fi. CISA: Best Practices for Using Public Wi-Fi
Choose between venue Wi-Fi and a personal hotspot
| Option | Trust and security | Connection considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel or dorm Wi-Fi | Confirm the network name and sign-in process with venue staff. CISA warns that attackers can create similarly named networks. The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe, but CISA advises caution and avoiding sensitive activity. | Hotel & Dorm Connect can help a compatible Roku complete a browser-based sign-in. Coverage, speed, and service depend on the venue. |
| Personal mobile hotspot | CISA says a personal mobile hotspot is generally more secure than public Wi-Fi. No option is risk-free. | Requires mobile coverage and an available data plan or allowance. Roku’s cited setup guidance does not compare hotspot costs or performance. |
The practical choice depends on whether you trust the network identity, whether a captive-portal sign-in is needed, and whether your phone has coverage and enough data. A phone’s hotspot can serve this purpose; a separate hotspot device is not required by the guidance.

Prepare the Roku before traveling
- Check Roku’s device comparison chart to confirm that your model supports Hotel & Dorm Connect; compatibility varies by device and may change. Roku device comparison chart
- If the Roku has been disconnected for an extended period, reconnect it to your home network and manually check for a software update before the trip, as Roku recommends.
- Pack the Roku, remote, and power adapter. For a Roku Streaming Stick or Roku TV, Roku says a high-speed HDMI cable is not needed for travel.
- Bring a computer or smartphone with Wi-Fi and a browser. You may need it to complete the venue’s web-based sign-in.
Connect with Hotel & Dorm Connect
- On the Roku, open Settings > Network > Set up new wireless connection.
- Select the venue’s Wi-Fi network only after confirming its exact name and sign-in instructions with venue staff.
- When prompted, select I am at a hotel or college dorm.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to authenticate using a computer or smartphone. If the network presents a login page, complete the venue’s sign-in steps there.
- After authentication, check the Roku network menu for the venue network and a Connected status.
Roku’s instructions cover the connection process; a successful captive-portal login does not establish that the hotspot is trustworthy. Check compatibility and Roku’s current setup steps in Roku Support: How do I use Hotel & Dorm Connect to connect to the internet?

- Ask venue staff for the exact Wi-Fi name and login procedure before joining. Avoid networks with similar names unless staff confirms them.
- Do not enter payment details, passwords, or other sensitive information into an unexpected page shown during setup. The FTC notes that HTTPS does not protect you from a scam site’s operator.
- For Roku activation or help, use websites ending in roku.com. Roku says activation and support are free, and its support team will not ask for your passwords or ask you to install software on your computer. Roku Support: How to protect yourself from activation and technical support scams
- Keep device software current, and avoid sensitive activities on public networks, as CISA advises.
These precautions address network choice and deceptive sign-in or support pages. The available official guidance does not establish a Roku-specific attack rate or describe a Roku VPN feature.
