If your Samsung Galaxy wakes or reacts inside your pocket, first turn off Lift to wake and Double tap to turn on screen, then enable Accidental touch protection. These settings address different things: wake gestures light the display, while accidental-touch protection is meant to reduce unintended input in a dark place. A screen that briefly lights does not necessarily mean the protection setting has failed.
Why a Galaxy wakes or reacts in your pocket
Samsung identifies Lift to wake and Double tap to wake as possible reasons a phone stored in a pocket or bag can wake. Once the display is on, contact with fabric or other objects may also cause concern about accidental input. Samsung’s pocket-wake troubleshooting guide and accidental-touch guidance treat waking the screen and preventing unintended touches as related but separate issues.

Turn off wake gestures you do not use
- Open Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
- Turn off Lift to wake.
- Turn off Double tap to turn on screen (sometimes called Double tap to wake).
Samsung says disabling both gestures may work better than turning off only one. The tradeoff is convenience: you will need to use the Side/Power button or another available method to wake the screen. Motion and gesture options vary by device and software version.

Enable Accidental touch protection
- Open Settings > Display.
- Turn on Accidental touch protection.
Samsung describes this feature as keeping the screen inactive in a dark place such as a pocket or bag. If a lock icon appears while you are trying to use the phone in a dark place, swipe the icon left or right to dismiss the protection.
If you use a Galaxy Z Flip
If accidental fingerprint touches or lockouts are part of the problem, search Settings for Fingerprint always on. Depending on your configuration, you may be able to turn it off or limit it to selected screens.

Check Touch sensitivity only when appropriate
If the display still seems too sensitive and your model has the control, open Settings > Display and switch off Touch sensitivity. Samsung notes that this setting may not be available on every phone. It is intended to improve responsiveness in situations such as using a screen protector, so turning it off may make touch response worse with some protectors or gloves.
A lit screen does not necessarily mean the protection failed
Samsung Support Canada says: “Even with Accidental touch protection turned on, your device’s screen may still light up briefly if it senses movement or contact.” The setting is intended to help prevent unintended interactions; it does not guarantee the display will never light. Samsung notes that features such as Lift to wake or Double tap can be involved. A PIN, pattern, or fingerprint lock helps prevent access if the screen lights, but a screen lock does not stop it from lighting in the first place. Look for other triggers if it continues
- Case pressing a button: Remove a third-party case briefly and see whether the behavior stops. A tight case may press the Power/Side or Bixby button.
- Notifications: Review notification settings. Samsung notes that some apps can turn on the screen to display a notification.
- Bixby voice wake-up: Check its settings if voice activation is enabled.
- Third-party app: Test the phone in Safe mode. If pocket waking stops there, consider apps you recently installed or updated.
- Wireless charging: If the problem occurs while charging, check whether it is tied to a third-party wireless fast charger. Samsung recommends Samsung-approved chargers for optimal performance and says some third-party fast chargers may cause unexpected wake-ups.
Samsung covers these checks in its phone-wakes-up-in-pocket-or-bag troubleshooting steps. Pocket waking alone is not proof of a hardware fault; the documented checks include settings, accessories, apps, notifications, buttons, and charging behavior.

After trying the free settings changes, a flip- or wallet-style case is another option. Samsung Canada says a closed cover can help block touches and keep the display dark in a pocket or bag. Choose one made for your exact Galaxy model, and check that it does not interfere with the buttons or fingerprint access. Samsung’s guidance supports the cover’s shielding role, not a guarantee that any particular case will fix the issue or a comparison of brands, durability, or prices.
