Then check whether your planned accessories use Thread. Apple identifies HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hub examples; that Apple TV configuration detail matters if you want to use Thread-based Matter accessories.
What an Apple Home hub does
Apple says a home hub lets you control accessories while away, share control with other people, and run automations. HomePod mini and HomePod become hubs automatically when set up. Apple TV can also be set up as a hub, and only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to the Home app for that purpose. Apple Support’s home hub setup guidance explains the roles and setup.

Choose Apple TV if you want a streaming device
Apple TV combines TV streaming with the home hub role. If Thread support is part of your decision, Apple specifically identifies Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled. Do not assume that every Apple TV 4K configuration has the same Thread capability. Apple’s current hub guidance names its supported examples.

Check Matter and Thread compatibility before buying
Matter and Thread are different things: Matter is an interoperability standard, while Thread is one way an accessory can connect. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. Thread-based Matter accessories additionally require a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub. So, check the exact accessory’s connection protocol rather than relying on a Matter label alone. Apple’s Matter accessory guidance and Apple Home developer compatibility information describe the requirements.
- For a Matter accessory using Thread: select an Apple Home hub that Apple identifies as Thread-enabled, such as HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet.
- For a Matter accessory that does not use Thread: check Apple’s requirements for that accessory type; Thread-specific requirements do not automatically apply to all Matter devices.
- For a third-party Thread border router: treat it as a networking component, not automatically as a complete Apple Home hub. Apple notes that a supported third-party border router can meet a Thread requirement in some listed configurations, but its guidance does not establish that the border router alone provides all Apple Home hub functions.
A simple decision checklist
- Decide what you want in the room. Pick HomePod mini if you want a compact speaker, or Apple TV if you want a streaming device.
- Identify the accessory protocol. Check the product’s specifications to see whether each planned Matter accessory uses Thread.
- Match the exact hardware configuration. For Thread, confirm that Apple identifies the specific hub model and configuration as Thread-enabled; Apple’s named Apple TV example is the 3rd-generation 4K model with Wi-Fi + Ethernet.
- Confirm your intended Home features. Set up a hub if you need remote control, shared control, or automations.
Apple’s guidance establishes compatibility requirements, not a performance ranking or price comparison between Apple TV and HomePod. For a specific accessory, verify its protocol and Apple Home compatibility in the accessory maker’s listing as well as Apple’s current guidance.
