Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or Windows Update to find out whether your PC is eligible for Windows 11. The result identifies the specific requirement your device does not meet; age or a single specification is not enough to determine eligibility. If your PC fails, the next step depends on whether the issue is fixable—such as a disabled firmware setting or upgradeable memory—or a platform limit, such as an unsupported processor.
How to check whether your PC is eligible
- Download Microsoft’s PC Health Check app and select “Check now.” It reports whether the PC meets Windows 11 requirements and identifies any unmet criteria.
- You can also check eligibility in Windows Update. If you recently changed hardware, the eligibility result there may take up to 24 hours to refresh. Microsoft provides a manual refresh procedure.
- If this is a workplace-managed computer, ask your IT administrator to assess it before making changes.
A passing result means the device meets the stated eligibility requirements; it does not guarantee that every app or peripheral will work as expected, or that an upgrade will be offered immediately. Check compatibility and any Windows Update safeguard hold before proceeding.

What Windows 11 requires
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system requirements include all of the following:
- A processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores, that appears on Microsoft’s approved processor list.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- A display larger than 9 inches, with at least 720p resolution.
Meeting the speed and core-count thresholds alone is not sufficient: a processor must also be on Microsoft’s supported list. Some Windows features require more than these minimums. Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use also require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup.

What to do when the PC fails the check
Use the specific failure reported by PC Health Check to decide whether a repair is practical. Microsoft notes that memory or BIOS upgrades may help some devices, but upgrade options depend on the exact model.
| What the check reports | Next step | Verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 4 GB of RAM | Ask the PC maker or a qualified retailer whether memory can be upgraded. | The exact model, supported maximum memory, and current installed configuration. |
| TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot unavailable | Review the PC maker’s instructions and check UEFI/BIOS settings; a capability may exist but be disabled. | Whether the motherboard supports TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and whether the relevant features are disabled. |
| Unsupported processor or a fundamental platform limit | Compare the cost and reliability of a supported repair with replacing the PC. | Microsoft’s processor list, warranty status, device age, and replacement cost. |
Do not buy RAM or a TPM module based only on a generic recommendation: confirm compatibility with the manufacturer first. Microsoft recommends replacing devices that do not meet current Windows technical requirements. A replacement PC is the most direct supported option when the existing platform cannot qualify. If considering another operating system, check that it supports your applications, peripherals, accessibility needs, and support expectations.

What happens if you keep using Windows 10?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. The PC continues to work, but the absence of security fixes increases its exposure to malware and other threats. Before relying on an extended security option, check Microsoft’s current consumer program details and eligibility; those details are not established here.
Remaining on Windows 10 is therefore a risk-accepting choice, not a way to make an unsupported PC eligible for Windows 11. If you cannot replace or repair the computer immediately, make a plan for an operating system that is currently supported and suited to your needs.

Should you bypass Windows 11 requirements?
Microsoft’s installation guidance is for devices that meet the minimum requirements. It warns that a Windows 11 installation on unsupported hardware may not receive support or updates. If Windows 11 has already been installed on a device that does not meet the requirements, Microsoft recommends rolling back to Windows 10 immediately. Installation media does not change the device’s eligibility status.
Back up your files before a clean installation because it can erase data. For the supported installation paths and Microsoft’s warning, see Ways to install Windows 11.
