A slow portable SSD is usually limited by something around the drive: the USB mode the port actually negotiates, the cable, a hub or adapter, the source drive, or the kind of files you are copying. Work through those in order, cheapest check first, and you will usually find the bottleneck before you consider replacing anything. This guide gives that sequence, and a point at which to stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer.
What “slow” can mean
Three different complaints get lumped together, and they point to different causes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Slow from the first second. This usually points to the port, cable, hub, or a drive running in an older USB mode.
- Fast at first, then slower. This is a pattern, not a diagnosis. Manufacturer guidance names heat and workload among possible contributors, but none of the sources reviewed establishes a universal cause or temperature threshold.
- Slow only with folders full of small files. This is often normal behavior, not a fault.
Advertised speeds are maximums under ideal conditions. SanDisk’s support guidance states that performance may vary depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors. Cross-brand independent benchmarks were not part of the sources reviewed, so no universal “normal” transfer rate can be given here. Compare your drive against its own spec sheet and against itself on another computer.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStep 1: Make the test fair
- Confirm the copy is really to or from the portable SSD and not between two other drives.
- Test two workloads separately: one large file (several gigabytes), and a folder of many small files. SanDisk notes that a terabyte of large files transfers much faster than the same total spread across millions of small files, and that directory layout can affect performance.
- Keep source and destination identical between tests.
A file-manager copy is not a clean benchmark. SanDisk lists Windows and macOS indexing, background programs, system memory, encryption, and caching as factors that can change what you see. Seagate also notes that the computer’s internal drive can limit throughput, and that file size and type affect results. If the source is a slow hard drive or a nearly full internal SSD, the portable drive is not the bottleneck.

Step 2: Check the port and protocol, not just the plug
USB-C is a connector shape. It does not tell you the data protocol or speed behind it. Two USB-C ports on the same laptop can support different speeds, and some are charge-only or limited to USB 2.0.
Kingston’s published table of nominal maximum interface rates shows how wide the gap can be:
Rank #2

| USB mode | Nominal maximum | Source |
|---|---|---|
| USB 2.0 | 480 Mbps | Kingston Technology (year not stated) |
| USB 3.2 Gen 1 | 5 Gbps | Kingston Technology (year not stated) |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2 | 10 Gbps | Kingston Technology (year not stated) |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 | 20 Gbps | Kingston Technology (year not stated) |
These are interface ceilings, not guaranteed file-copy rates. Protocol overhead and the drive itself keep real transfers lower.
A concrete example: Kingston says its XS2000 needs a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 host to reach its rated 20 Gbps, and warns that a Thunderbolt or USB4 port may run at a lower USB mode depending on how the host implements it. That statement is specific to that product and should not be generalized to every SSD or computer. The practical step is to find your SSD’s required interface in its spec sheet, then look up the exact port in the computer’s manual or manufacturer specifications.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
The effect of a slow port can be severe. LaCie’s Portable SSD manual (2021 edition per its listing) says: “If your device is connected to a Hi-Speed 2.0 port or hub, the inferior performance is normal.” Use a SuperSpeed (USB 3.x) port.
Step 3: Simplify the physical connection
- Plug the SSD directly into the computer, bypassing any dock, hub, adapter, or extension cable.
- Unplug and reseat both ends of the cable.
- Try a different port on the same computer, preferably one documented to match the drive’s protocol.
- Use the cable that came with the drive first. SanDisk recommends a high-quality cable and a direct connection, and LaCie’s manual recommends checking that the cable is seated, reconnecting, and trying another cable.
If you try a third-party cable, confirm it is rated for data at the speed your drive needs. A USB-C connector or a high charging wattage does not establish high-speed data support; many charging cables carry only USB 2.0 data. A replacement USB-C data cable is a reasonable troubleshooting purchase only if the supplied cable is lost or damaged, and only if it is specified for your drive’s protocol. It is not a guaranteed upgrade.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Step 4: Compare computers
Repeat the same transfer on a second computer if you can. If the speed improves, the original host’s port, drivers, power mode, or workload is the likely cause. If it stays the same, the drive, cable, or data are more suspect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Laptops: plug in the charger and check the power plan. SanDisk lists battery level and energy-saving settings as possible contributors.
- Background load: pause cloud sync, backups, and large downloads while testing. Indexing and security scanning can compete with the copy.
- Security software: SanDisk mentions real-time protection as a factor, and its guidance includes disabling it. Don’t treat that as a routine first step. If you test with it off, do so briefly, with trusted files only, and follow your operating system’s current guidance.
Step 5: Check the drive’s condition
Free space
SanDisk lists low free space as a cause of slowdowns and recommends keeping 10% to 15% of the drive free. That is SanDisk’s recommendation, not a universal SSD rule.
Best Value
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Heat
SanDisk lists excessive heat as a possible cause. If the drive is warm and speed drops during long copies, let it cool, keep it off soft surfaces, and retest. Whether this is the cause of your slowdown cannot be established from general guidance alone, so judge it by whether a cooled drive recovers its starting speed.
Idle, sleep, and background maintenance
SanDisk also lists drive sleep and wake behavior and garbage collection (internal housekeeping) as possible factors. A first transfer after idle, or one right after heavy writing, may look different from a repeat run.
Power and firmware
Check the support page for your exact model. SanDisk’s page for selected models states minimum power requirements of 15 W for USB4 and 7.5 W for USB 3.2, and recommends current host BIOS, NVMe, Thunderbolt, and USB4 drivers and firmware. Those power figures apply only to the named product family, not to portable SSDs generally.
Encryption and file system
SanDisk’s backup-speed guidance lists encryption and file-system choice among the factors that affect transfer speed. If the drive is encrypted, or formatted in a way your computer handles poorly, speeds can differ from the spec. Don’t reformat to test this until your data is safely copied elsewhere.
Quick diagnosis table
| What you observe | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Slow on every file type, direct connection | Port mode or cable | Check the port spec; use the supplied cable on another port |
| Faster on a second computer | Original host | Check ports, drivers, power settings, background load |
| Large files fine, folders slow | Small-file workload | Archive the folder into one file before copying |
| Starts fast, then drops | Possibly heat, source drive, or cache behavior | Cool the drive, retest, try a different source |
| Slow through a hub or dock | Hub or adapter | Connect directly |
| Same slowdown everywhere, with a known-good cable | Drive or its firmware | Back up, then contact the manufacturer |
When to contact the manufacturer
If a direct connection, the supplied cable, and a second computer all give the same abnormal result, check the maker’s model-specific support page and warranty process. Copy important data off first, and avoid formatting or running destructive repair tools before doing so. If the drive is failing to the point of data loss, a data recovery service is a later step, after the connection and host checks above have ruled out simpler causes.
