An independent calculation can catch more errors, but agreement between tools is not proof: both may rely on the same mistaken setup or assumption.
Start by checking what problem the AI solved
Before checking the algebra, compare the AI’s setup with the original prompt. A flawless calculation can still produce the wrong answer if the system changed a sign, ignored a condition, or interpreted the question differently.

- Identify the unknown and the quantity the prompt asks you to find.
- Preserve the given values, signs, units, and assumptions.
- Note domain restrictions, such as a variable being positive, an angle being in a specified interval, or a denominator being nonzero.
- Check that the AI’s variables and equations represent those same facts.
For a word problem, translate the final result back into the situation. If the question asks for a distance, for example, a negative answer may signal a setup or interpretation problem even if the algebra is internally consistent.

Read the solution line by line. Recalculate consequential arithmetic and ask whether each equality or inference follows from the previous one. Pay particular attention to transformations that can change which solutions are included.
#1 Best Overall
- Squaring both sides can introduce candidates that do not satisfy the original equation.
- Dividing by an expression containing a variable can discard a case where that expression equals zero. Check that case separately before dividing.
- Approximations or numerical methods may produce candidates that need to be checked against the exact conditions.
Wolfram Language documentation describes an explicit verification option for this issue: “Using Automatic solution verification attempts to detect and discard possibly invalid results.” The wording matters: it says attempts, not that every possible error is caught. Wolfram Research’s VerifySolutions documentation explains that the option concerns solutions obtained through non-equivalent transformations or numerical methods.
Substitute the answer into the original conditions
Test every proposed answer in the original problem, not only in a simplified or transformed equation. This checks whether a candidate works; it does not, by itself, prove that the solution list is complete or that the AI’s explanation is valid.
Rank #2
- For a single equation, substitute each candidate into the original equation and evaluate both sides.
- For a system, check every equation and all stated constraints.
- For inequalities, confirm the candidate lies in the required interval and satisfies the original inequality.
- For optimization, check feasibility and the stated objective; satisfying a stationary condition alone does not establish the requested optimum.
- For a proof, inspect each inference. Examples can disprove a universal claim, but a few confirming examples do not prove it.
Check that the answer is complete and correctly interpreted
A candidate can satisfy the equation while the solution remains incomplete. Review whether the reasoning lost a case, whether all requested solutions were listed, and whether the result is expressed in the requested form and units. In contextual problems, check that the answer makes sense in the stated situation.

Choose an independent check that fits the problem
Use a second method when practical, and consider what it actually verifies. A calculator can confirm arithmetic; a different derivation can test the setup; a symbolic solver can compare expressions or candidate solutions. The more independent the method, the more useful the agreement—but no method removes the need to check the prompt and assumptions.
| Check | What it can help verify | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Hand calculation or a different derivation | Arithmetic, algebraic steps, and whether another route reaches the same result | Correctness if it repeats the same mistaken interpretation or assumption |
| Substitution into the original problem | Whether a proposed candidate satisfies the equation or conditions | That every solution has been found, or that the explanation is a valid proof |
| Calculator | Numerical arithmetic and approximate evaluations | Whether the setup, domain, or interpretation is appropriate |
| Symbolic math tool | Independent algebraic or symbolic comparison, depending on the input and feature used | That the entered problem was transcribed correctly or that all possible errors were detected |
Using Wolfram|Alpha for a comparison
Wolfram|Alpha’s official examples describe step-by-step solutions across more than 200 topics in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, from elementary school through college. You can use a worked solution to compare calculations and inspect a method. Enter the original problem carefully, including relevant conditions, and treat the output as another check rather than as proof that the AI’s reasoning is correct.

Using Wolfram Language’s solution verification
Wolfram Language’s VerifySolutions option concerns verification of solutions obtained through non-equivalent transformations or numerical methods. Its documented behavior is specific; it should not be read as a guarantee that every modeling, transcription, or reasoning error will be found.

There is no universal current AI math correctness percentage established by the cited sources. A 2023 study record describes an evaluation of 105 original high-school and college-level math and science problems, conducted from June through August 2023. That is a description of the study’s sample and period, not an overall accuracy rate and not evidence about current AI models generally. The arXiv record for the study provides its scope.
