If your Microsoft 365 work or school profile picture won’t update, change it in the My Account portal, select Save, then allow time for each app to refresh. Microsoft documents different timing by product: SharePoint Online may take up to 24 hours, while classic Outlook may take up to 48 hours. If the edit control is missing, your organization may manage or restrict the photo. If only Teams is stale, clearing its cache may help.
Why won’t my Microsoft 365 profile picture update?
A Microsoft 365 profile photo is used across connected services, but the apps do not necessarily display a change at the same time. First check that the new image was saved to your work or school account. Then identify where the old image remains: a single app may need time or a local refresh, while a missing editing control can indicate an organization policy or centrally managed profile.

The steps below apply to work or school accounts. Microsoft’s profile-card guidance notes that profile information appears in apps such as Teams and Outlook, and the photo’s appearance can vary by app: Microsoft profile photo guidance.
Change the photo at the account source
- Go to myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with the work or school account whose photo is outdated.
- Select the edit icon on the current profile photo.
- Upload a new picture or choose a replacement, then select Save.
After saving, check the affected Microsoft apps again. Updating the account photo is the first step; it does not guarantee that every connected app will refresh immediately.

If you can’t edit or change the picture
If the edit icon or change option is unavailable, ask your organization’s IT team or HR whether photo editing is restricted or managed centrally. Microsoft’s account guidance says an organization can restrict changes, and its classic Outlook guidance notes that the Change option may be absent when information is controlled by IT or HR systems.
Repeatedly trying the same control will not override an organization-managed setting. An administrator can tell you whether you can change the photo yourself or whether they need to update it.

How long does a new photo take to appear?
Use the timing for the product where you see the old image. These are Microsoft’s product-specific support guidelines, not a single deadline for every Microsoft 365 app.

If the relevant product’s guidance window has not passed, give the service time to refresh before treating the discrepancy as a persistent sync issue.

If Teams alone still shows the old photo
When the account photo is correct elsewhere but Teams still displays the previous image, clear the Teams cache and check again. Microsoft says cache clearing may help a profile picture update across channels sooner; it is a possible aid, not a guaranteed fix. See Microsoft’s Teams cache guidance.
When to contact your Microsoft 365 administrator
Escalate if you cannot edit the photo, or if it remains stale after the timing guidance for the affected product. A tenant-specific cause cannot be diagnosed from the visible symptom alone; an administrator can check the account and service configuration.

What to ask about SharePoint Online
For a SharePoint Online discrepancy, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several items an administrator can verify:

- Whether the profile Picture property is editable.
- Whether the My Site Host site collection has available quota.
- Whether the previous SharePoint photo-sync attempt is more than 24 hours old before attempting another sync.
Microsoft advises against manually editing the User Photo properties in the User Profile. The SharePoint process described in its documentation checks the Entra photo against profile information and syncs it to SharePoint’s repository when needed. Guest user profile pictures are not synced to SharePoint Online. These details apply to SharePoint Online, not necessarily to every Microsoft 365 app.

Why a photo may differ between Microsoft services
Microsoft documents several ways a photo can reach Microsoft Entra: a user can change it through Microsoft 365; an administrator can upload it using the Microsoft Graph PowerShell Set-MgUserPhotoContent cmdlet or an admin center; or an organization can synchronize Active Directory’s ThumbnailPhoto attribute with Azure AD Connect.
Microsoft cautions that the ThumbnailPhoto method produces low-resolution photos, and that this attribute is not synced from Azure AD to SharePoint. A photo that is correct in one service but not another can therefore require a product-specific refresh or an administrator’s review of the relevant sync route.
