Why Your MagSafe Charger Is Charging Slowly and How to Fix It

Slow MagSafe charging can come from the adapter, case, temperature, accessories, or heavy use. Troubleshoot those factors before replacing hardware.

Slow MagSafe charging is often caused by the power adapter, a case or poor alignment, temperature, or heavy iPhone use—not necessarily a faulty charger. Start by checking the setup and conditions before buying anything: the right adapter depends on your iPhone and MagSafe Charger generation, and Apple’s stated peak rates are not guaranteed sustained speeds.

Why MagSafe charging can be slow

Wireless charging speed varies with the iPhone model, MagSafe Charger generation, adapter, iOS, and conditions while charging. Apple describes peak power delivery of up to 25W for listed compatible MagSafe Charger and iPhone configurations; that is a peak, not a promise that every setup will sustain that rate. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple describes MagSafe charging at up to 15W with an Apple USB-C adapter rated 20W or greater, or a comparable USB-C Power Delivery adapter. Actual power varies with the device, adapter, and system conditions.

Common reasons charging slows include an adapter that does not meet the applicable setup requirements, a case or object interfering with alignment, a phone that is too warm or cold, wired accessories connected to the iPhone, or demanding apps and a bright display drawing power while charging.

Fix slow MagSafe charging in this order

  1. Check that the iPhone is charging wirelessly. If it is connected to USB, wired charging takes precedence over wireless charging. Disconnect the cable if you want to test MagSafe.
  2. Remove anything between the phone and charger. Take off the case for a test, and remove wallets or other objects. A thick, metal, or battery case can interfere with wireless charging.
  3. Reconnect and reposition the charger. Connect the MagSafe Charger to power first. Put it face up on a clear, flat surface, away from metal objects or foreign material, then place the iPhone on it.
  4. Let a hot or cold phone return to a normal temperature. Move it out of direct sunlight or a hot space and give it time to cool or warm before charging again. Apple recommends an ambient charging range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F). If the iPhone tends to heat while charging, remove its case.
  5. Disconnect wired accessories and reduce phone use. Connected USB-C or Lightning accessories can limit wireless charging to comply with regulatory standards. Processor-intensive apps, games, camera use, and high-quality video on a bright display can also reduce charging speed.
  6. Check the battery settings for a clue. On supported software, open Settings > Battery and look for a Slow Charger or temperature-related notice. Apple says a Slow Charger message indicates that the connected charger may not be capable of optimal power; it does not by itself prove that the iPhone or charger is faulty.

Check the adapter against your exact setup

Do not assume that one wattage applies to every MagSafe Charger and iPhone. Apple’s current MagSafe setup guidance recommends a 30W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter, or a compatible third-party adapter, for the configurations described on that page. Apple’s guidance for iPhone 15 and earlier says an Apple USB-C adapter rated 20W or greater—or a comparable USB-C Power Delivery adapter—can support MagSafe charging at up to 15W. These are model- and configuration-specific recommendations, not interchangeable universal rules.

Apple MagSafe Charger (2 m): Wireless Charger with Fast-Charging Capability
  • The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to compatible iPhone models. The MagSafe Charger provides faster wireless charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W power adapter.
  • The MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2.2 and Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case.
  • Available in two cable lengths: 1 meter and 2 meter.

Before replacing an adapter, identify your iPhone model and MagSafe Charger generation, then compare them with Apple’s setup guidance. If using a multi-port adapter, consider whether other connected devices share its output and reduce the power available to the charger. A third-party adapter should meet the relevant output requirement; for the iPhone 15-and-earlier guidance, Apple specifies USB Power Delivery.

Setup or symptom What Apple’s guidance says What to check
Compatible current MagSafe configurations Apple recommends a 30W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter or compatible third-party adapter; listed configurations can reach up to 25W peak power delivery. Confirm that your iPhone and MagSafe Charger are among the compatible configurations, and treat 25W as a peak rather than a sustained-rate guarantee.
iPhone 15 and earlier using MagSafe Up to 15W with an Apple USB-C adapter rated 20W or greater, or a comparable USB-C Power Delivery adapter. Check the iPhone model, adapter output, and USB Power Delivery support on a third-party adapter.
Slow Charger notice in Settings The charger may not be capable of optimal power; the notice does not establish that the iPhone or charger is faulty. Check the adapter and setup requirements for the exact iPhone and charger combination.

When to consider replacing a case or adapter

If charging improves after you remove a case, the case may be interfering. If you replace it, choose one that fits your exact iPhone and supports MagSafe; a replacement case is not guaranteed to increase charging speed. If the adapter does not meet the requirements for your setup, choose a USB-C power adapter that does, checking its output and—where required—USB Power Delivery support. No single adapter wattage is a universal fix.
