Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter a suspected OpenBao compromise, first identify what may have been exposed and contain the affected access path. Revoke compromised OpenBao tokens and leases, rotate any copied credentials at the systems that issued them, and change OpenBao key material only if that layer may also be compromised. These actions solve different problems: rotating an encryption key does not invalidate a leaked cloud credential, and changing a token does not repair a compromised OpenBao server.
Identify what may have been exposed
“OpenBao compromise” can mean anything from one leaked client token to access to the OpenBao host, storage, or seal material. The response depends on the affected identity, auth path, secret engines, time window, and systems that received credentials.

| Suspected exposure | Primary response | What that response does not do |
|---|---|---|
| A known OpenBao token | Revoke the token, directly or by its accessor, and account for its leases. | It does not invalidate copied credentials that remain active at an external issuer. |
| An auth method or token-issuance path | Assess revocation by the auth-method prefix; determine which tokens and dynamic secrets were issued through it. | It does not establish which downstream systems were accessed or rotate unrelated static credentials. |
| A static cloud, database, API, SSH, or certificate credential stored in or read from OpenBao | Replace it at the system that issued it, then update dependent workloads and retire the old credential when safe. | Revoking an OpenBao token alone does not make the copied credential invalid. |
| OpenBao root/unseal or recovery material | Assess the applicable quorum-based root-key or recovery-key rotation procedure. | It is not the same operation as rotating the backend encryption key. |
| OpenBao host, storage, or backend encryption material | Contain and investigate that infrastructure layer; consider backend keyring rotation only as part of the assessed response. | Keyring rotation does not retroactively rewrite old ciphertext or invalidate external credentials. |
| A Transit key | Rotate the Transit key for new encryption and rewrap existing ciphertext if migration is needed. | Rotation alone does not update existing ciphertext to the latest key version. |
Preserve relevant audit, identity-provider, infrastructure, and application evidence where feasible while containing the exposure. OpenBao’s controls explain how to revoke or rotate particular material; they cannot establish the incident’s access window, identify what was read, or determine the safest continuity plan for your deployment.
Revoke OpenBao access and its descendants
Revoke a known token
Revoke a compromised token directly or use its accessor. An accessor supports limited token operations, including revocation; OpenBao also documents accessor listing as a way to audit and revoke active tokens. A token’s revocation also revokes its associated leases.

Consider prefix revocation for a compromised auth path
If the auth method or the path through which it issued tokens is suspect, evaluate revoking the auth-method prefix rather than treating one known token as the entire scope. Prefix revocation targets tokens issued through that path and dynamic secrets generated by them. Confirm the intended prefix and expected impact against the deployed OpenBao release before acting.
Use force revocation deliberately
OpenBao documents ordinary prefix revocation and force revocation. Force revocation ignores backend errors, so it may be appropriate only as a deliberate emergency choice. Verify downstream systems independently: a failed backend revocation can leave a credential active even when the revocation operation was attempted.

Rotate credentials where they were issued
If an attacker may have obtained a cloud IAM key, database password, external API token, SSH credential, certificate, or other static secret, rotate it at the issuing system. OpenBao can store and serve secrets, but the issuer controls whether those external credentials remain valid.
- Identify the issuer and dependent applications for each potentially exposed credential.
- Create or issue a replacement using the issuer’s supported process.
- Update dependent workloads through a controlled rollout, and verify that they authenticate successfully with the replacement.
- Disable or revoke the old credential once the new one is confirmed and the issuer’s overlap and availability requirements allow it.
Do not assume revoking the OpenBao token used to retrieve a static credential revokes the credential itself. Where the system supports it, short-lived, just-in-time credentials reduce the period in which a copied credential can be reused.

Rotate OpenBao key material only when that layer is implicated
Root/unseal material and recovery keys
OpenBao distinguishes root-key rotation from backend encryption-key rotation. Root-key rotation also changes Shamir unseal shares and uses a quorum process. Recovery-key rotation is a separate path where supported, also subject to the applicable quorum procedure. Confirm the seal configuration, required quorum, and procedure for the deployed release before starting; do not treat these as interchangeable with token revocation.
Backend encryption keyring
Rotating the backend keyring adds a new encryption key for subsequent writes. Previous key versions remain available to decrypt data already stored, so this is not retroactive erasure of old ciphertext. Keyring rotation is relevant to the backend encryption layer; it does not repair a leaked cloud, database, or API credential.

Handle Transit rotation and rewrapping separately
Transit key rotation changes which key version is used for new encryption. Rewrapping is the separate operation that upgrades existing ciphertext to the latest version without returning plaintext to the caller. Keep older versions available for decryption until migration and recovery requirements are satisfied.

For AES-GCM keys, OpenBao’s Transit documentation advises rotation before approximately 232 encryptions have been performed by a key version, following NIST Special Publication 800-38D. This is key-use guidance, not a credential-rotation deadline or a breach-response statistic. If Transit is used for auto-unseal, OpenBao cautions against deleting or disabling old keys that may be needed for older data.

Validate the response and reduce repeat exposure
- Confirm the replacement credentials work and, where intended, the old credentials fail.
- Check that expected tokens and leases were revoked, and investigate any backend errors or downstream credentials that remain active.
- Confirm affected workloads have reauthenticated and that audit and monitoring are functioning.
- Review token and policy scope, and prefer shorter-lived credentials where the application and issuer support them.
- Follow OpenBao’s root-token hygiene guidance: revoke initial root tokens after setup and use more tightly controlled authentication.
Whether to isolate, seal, fail over, or keep OpenBao available depends on the compromise scope, service dependencies, and evidence available in the incident. General documentation cannot make that operational decision for a particular environment.
OpenBao’s key-rotation documentation covers 2.7.x, while some relevant documentation is on the development next branch. Check behavior and procedures against the exact release deployed before executing production changes.
