A software utility or BIOS tweak cannot make an ineligible laptop processor overclockable. For Intel Core processors, Intel says supported overclocking is limited to unlocked models with a K or X suffix—and even those need compatible platform and BIOS support. To find out what your laptop can do, start with its exact processor and model rather than trying to bypass a lock.
What “locked” means for laptop overclocking
Overclocking changes a processor’s operating frequency beyond its supported settings. A locked processor does not offer supported overclocking controls just because a tuning app is installed or a BIOS menu contains performance options. Intel’s guidance for its Core processors limits supported overclocking to unlocked K- or X-suffix models; that rule should not be generalized to every processor family. Intel’s processor overclocking guidance also cautions that eligibility does not guarantee a laptop exposes the necessary controls.

Check whether your specific laptop supports it

Identify the processor
Find the full CPU model in your operating system’s system information or the laptop maker’s specifications. Check the exact model and suffix, not just the processor family name. If it is not an eligible unlocked Intel Core K- or X-suffix model, Intel’s supported Core overclocking guidance does not apply to it.

Check the laptop maker’s platform and BIOS support
Look up your exact laptop model and current BIOS documentation on the manufacturer’s support site. A processor’s eligibility alone is not enough: chipset and BIOS support can determine whether tuning controls are available. Intel advises OEM users to ask the computer manufacturer about BIOS support. Intel’s guidance on grayed-out XTU settings describes these platform and BIOS conditions.

Do not treat an installed tuning utility as proof
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) being installed does not establish that a laptop can be overclocked. Intel’s laptop troubleshooting guidance ties support to eligible K- and X-suffix processor models. Intel’s laptop-specific XTU support page explains that eligibility requirement.
Why overclocking controls may be missing or grayed out
- The processor is not eligible: Intel’s supported Core overclocking applies only to unlocked K- or X-suffix parts.
- The platform does not expose tuning: Compatible chipset and BIOS support affect whether advanced controls appear.
- The laptop maker limits the options: The available BIOS controls vary by system, so use documentation for the exact model and contact its manufacturer if support is unclear.
These checks distinguish an unsupported processor from a system that does not expose controls. They do not establish what a particular unspecified laptop can do; that requires its CPU and model details.

Why bypassing the lock is not a safe shortcut
Intel warns that changing clock frequency or voltage may affect warranty coverage, stability, security, performance, and the lifespan of the processor and other components. The warranty outcome depends on the applicable system and component terms, so check those terms with the laptop and processor makers rather than assuming a universal result. Intel’s overclocking guidance sets out the warning.

What to do instead
If your goal is better performance, first check the laptop maker’s supported performance or thermal modes for your exact model. These are distinct from changing processor frequency or voltage beyond supported settings. If controls remain unavailable, give the manufacturer your full laptop model, processor model, and BIOS version and ask which performance features are supported. Without those details, no particular setting, safe tuning limit, or performance gain can be promised.
